1. The strange weather This is an element of nature as often used in romanticism. The weather is being personified, as the Mariner says: Again, nature is seen as a powerful and threatening thing. It's also definitely a character in the story along with the Mariner and the other people on the ship. Nature is kind of a person in this thing. 2. The albatross Where nature is described as a powerful an threatening thing when talking about the weather the opposite happens for the albatross. The albatross is seen as a good omen. When it appears the ship breaks free and things are looking up. It's where the supernatural comes in. As the ship gets closer, they realize it's a ghost ship. This is a clear element used in the horror genre, advocating the fact that The Rime of the ancient Mariner is actually a gothic poem. 5. Spirits There’s two spirits the Mariner hears arguing whilst he’s in some sort of trance. It really seems like they are in trouble, like it's not going to be okay. They decide that the albatross was their good luck charm and the Mariner needs to be punished for shooting it.
