Swords, armor, shields, gore… All these things are related, but how? Well that, my friend, would be the questionable ancient Roman entertainment known as gladiator battles. Gladiator battles were a serious and beloved hobby in ancient Rome, at least for the people watching. But for the gladiators, those battles were a way of life. The gladiators, who were mostly made up of slaves and prisoners, were vigorously cared for and kept in shape with constant training and a very specific diet. Despite being brutally beaten and tortured, gladiators were rarely killed for they were loved by many, sometimes even battling at funerals of the rich. The gladiators lived a painful and oddly ironic life.
Even though gladiator battles were so glorified in ancient Rome, most gladiators did not have a choice in the matter of becoming a part of them. The majority of gladiators were slaves, with a good few prisoners of war mixed in to the bunch. Gladiators were held in rooms of about 32 square feet, mostly living in sets of two per room. New recruits were usually called Novicus. Members of Novicus were first trained to reach their peak fitness level, complete with a set diet and regimen. Gladiators only ate high protein foods and drank only water. Personal hygiene was also highly valued in hopes of preventing disease spreading.

But, fortunately ( or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it), gladiator battles were actually ended before a fighter died most of the time. In a traditional battle, the gladiators goal was to trap or injure the opponent. This is probably due to how much gladiators were loved by the Romans. Gladiators were originally meant to occupy the poor in order to avoid a revolt. Over time, though, all Romans began to enjoy watching gladiator battles, some even participating willingly. SInce so many people loved them, the gladiators were not killed unless the spectators
Roman Gladiators had many other talents other than fighting too. They were very good at gathering attention from the media. They had to try and make big names for themselves in order to establish a fanbase. They also had to have great work ethic because usually the strongest man won so it was constant training. They had to set their entire lives around gladiator fighting and keep up with their normal lives, although most of them were in jail they still had lives even while living in a cell.
The Roman gladiator captivated the masses and contributed to the very definition of ancient Rome. The consumption and coverage of football in America today is the modern equivalent to how gladiatorial games fit into the entertainment and overall culture of the ancient Roman world, with the gladiatorial games holding even deeper importance regarding spirituality. In a society built through the balancing of bloodshed and civility, the ancient Roman gladiator made his impact through spectacle by pure carnage. From 264 BC to AD 404, the Roman people were captivated by gladiators; their appeal remained constant through shifts in power and changes in overall purpose. The purpose of Roman gladiatorial combat went from being to honor the dead and
Throughout the film, gladiatorial games are shown to be one of the most important parts of the Roman society. Gladiatorial games and fights followed a strict procedure and ceremony. They arrived at the Colosseum through an underground tunnel. From there, they were able to access to the arena through a pair of gates reserved to them only. Additionally, the gladiators often marched in groups, with their distinctive uniform and equipment. This is displayed accurately when Maximus enters the arena through a pair of gates and works with a team of other gladiators with similar outfits. However, they did not wear fantasy helmets and bands wrapped around the lower arms and their armors are not always closely historically accurate. Moreover, Roman people loved to watch people battle to death and bloodthirsty violence as a form of entertainment. Spectators in the film cheered and chanted wildly in the Colosseum when their favorite, Maximus was battling with
Successful gladiators that volunteered were like movie stars during that time. Their gladiator school in Vienna, Austria had heated floors for winter training, plumbing, hospitals, and a graveyard nearby (paragraph 7). We always thought people in Rome did not really care about gladiators and that they just saw them as entertainment. The gladiator school was two stories high, there was a practice arena, and they had many other nice things (paragraph 7). People always thought that gladiators did not really matter and they did not have any nice things.
After the defeat of Carthage, Romans were thirsty for violence. In ancient Rome, gladiators were of the most notorious people on the planet. Deranked from society, they still managed to maintain a high charisma and attained significant amounts of glory. While at camps, they underwent intense training, were treated like animals, and had all their rights stripped from them. But despite the cruelties, they were highly honored and were gifted various rewards and ceremonial banquets on the days before their gruesome battles. Also, the owners of gladiators or people involved in the trade, ensured that they were treated with at least some hospitality and ensured the well being of the fighters. Gladiators were depicted on artifacts throughout all of Rome. Women viewed gladiators as sexually attractive idols because of the bravery and strength they displayed in the arena. Even though a lot of women wanted to have children with those men because of their strength, but were not allowed to because gladiators were still characterized as nothing more than criminals and slaves; the lowest rank in society.
Early gladiator fights took place in funerals of wealthy Romans, but their main purpose was to give the people a good show. As the gladiator games grew in popularity, the funeral ritual tradition was eventually dropped and the games were staged for what they werea display of wealth and entertainment for the masses. By approximately 90 B.C., gladiator games began taking place in circuses and forums. Circuses were elongated arenas with a spine down the middle, designed for chariot racing. In a circus, the audience had good seats but a poor view of the event. Since circuses were built for chariot races, their long and narrow shape made it difficult for someone sitting on one end to see an event going on at the other end. A good example of a circus is the Circus Maximus. This structure was the first and largest circus built by the Romans and it could hold up to 250,000 people. Forums were open gathering places in the center of a town, often with a monument in the middle. Audiences watching a gladiator event in a forum still experienced problems because the ground was flat, so only the people in the first few rows could see anything. Over the years, the gladiator games became even more elaborate to the point where some fights included fights with wild animals. So the Romans now had a problem on their hands: how to fit a large number of people in a way that let them see everything that was

Gladiators were mostly unfree individuals either condemned criminals, prisoners of wars who had lost their citizenship rights, although, some of them were volunteers who were mostly freedmen or very low classes of freeborn men who chose to be a slave for monetary rewards or for the fame. The Nature of Gladiator Fights The Gladiatorial fights were noble in some ways, but in others seem to have the characteristics of the lowest form of entertainment. Gladiators were considered to fight with pride, they honoured their Gods with sacrifices and prayer for victory and they honoured their traditions and heritage, often being armed in weapons and armour, and having fighting styles originating from their country of origin. For example "the Gaul. " Glory and fame, were just two of the noble characteristics associated with gladiators, and they were dressed in the fashion of a noble soldier, often trained in the same way.
Introduced in around 250BC, gladiators were well-trained individuals who fought against each other to entertain the civilians of Rome. The gladiators fought in the Colosseum, which had a height of about 160 feet and capacity of up to 50,000 people. The Colosseum was also designed to be able to flood and hold ships. The term gladiator comes from the Latin word: "gladius" meaning sword. The profession of being a fighter brought great fame to the individual. The theme of death brought people together to see many young men die in battle. The crowd loved vicious shows that were gory and gruesome. Many gladiators who fought in the Colosseum went on to become tremendous war heroes, due to the intense training provided by the emperor. Gladiators always wore clothing that resembled other nations that the Roman army seized. They were also given unorthodox weapons to fight with and their battles usually illustrated famous ones fought by the Roman army. Sometimes, the ‘damnati ad mortem’, individuals who committed ruthless crimes, went into the arena without a weapon. Gladiators were mostly captives of war or slaves of the rich. Some people saw the fighting as a hobby and spent much time and money picking and choosing from the best of the gladiators. A fanatic of fighting was called a "lanista", or an owner of gladiators. Keeping these gladiators in good health became very expensive over time. Different gladiators were allowed to use different weapons based on their past life. For
Marijuana has been a tremendous on-going legal debate over the last few centuries in America. In the last few decades marijuana use in America has been on the rise, especially among young adults. Marijuana comes from the hemp plant known as "Cannabis Sativa". In 2727 B.C, the Chinese were the first to document the use of marijuana for medicine. Chinese would use the seeds of the hemp plant for food (Borges, 2014, Ch. 15). Marijuana has been known for a lot more than just getting high though. In the past it’s been used for fabric, food, incense, cloth, and much more. In the last few decades America has come up with a variety of nicknames for the Marijuana. Some common nicknames include Cannabis, Skunk, Ganja, Maryjane, Refeer, bud and tree. Many of these street names arrived from the leafy appearance and its vigorous smell.
I had decided to delay studying for my extensive anatomy test over all the muscles of the body until the night before the enormous test. I knew that my reasoning was not sound and I should have commenced long before. I came to the resolution to make an effort and learn all of the muscles and pray for a miracle while I took the test. The next day I trudged into my anatomy class with my stomach in my throat. As Mr. Nikiforow passed out the test I felt my nerves kick in instantaneously. I sat in agony as my classmates ploddingly passed the test down the row. I began to glance through the test and I knew at that instant that I would never make the same mistake again. When we received our test back later that week, little to my surprise I had failed. My first initial reaction was “this material was tremendously challenging and everyone else obtained poor grades as well, so Mr. Nik must have done an inadequate job teaching it to us”. I went through the rest of my day attempting to forget about the test, but it seemed to keep popping up in the back of my head. When I arrived home, I decided to address the looming thoughts in the back of my head. My sub par grade on the test was in no way Mr. Nik’s responsibility. The grade instead was a clear representation to the lack of effort I had put forth in studying. Prior to anatomy, I had been able to attain quality grades with minimal studying. Failing my anatomy test presented me with the wake up call that I needed.
Gladiators were a huge part of the Roman society and a large part of Roman culture. The people of Rome loved gladiator battles. The Roman coliseum was built in order to fit the standards of a bloody, brutal battle while also being able to keep thousands of Roman citizens comfortable and entertained.
Like anything else, these shows were often times politically based to gain support for an Emperor. Aside from this they made for great entertainment to divert ones thoughts away from everyday troubles. What a better way than to see masses of people brutally slaughtered. In reality and the movie alike, the gladiators wore crude armor, not of military status to depict the difference in class. Nonetheless they were equipped with the armor and
They had to inspect the men just by looking at their bodies and making sure they were strong and healthy enough to purchase. “I did not pay good money for you, for your company. I paid it so I could profit from your death,” he said. These quotes show that no one cared about the gladiators because they were slaves. All they cared about was that they put on a good show.
