Role Switching Roles In Romeo And Juliet

Decent Essays

Two weeks ago, I was at the Regina Theatre and saw a play named “Och Juliet”. I assumed this was going to be like Romeo and Juliet. What I saw was not Romeo and Juliet.

Capulet’s and Montague’s are two rich families who hate each other. The Montague’s son named “Romeo” attends the Capulet’s party where he meets the Capulet’s daughter Juliet and both fall in love at first sight. They are getting married in secret and everything goes well until Juliet’s father wants her to marry someone else. Juliet fakes her own death to cancel the marriage. However, as soon as Romeo heard of Juliet’s death commits suicide. Juliet wakes up and discovers Romeo is dead, and somehow without any explanation Juliet becomes a celebrity.

It doesn’t work like that anymore. One of the major difference with this show is that all, all of the actors are constantly switching roles and often many of them are playing the same role at the same time. However, the music was way too loud and I had to hold my ears. The show didn’t have any sound effects which I can remember.
I really did appreciate the lightning effects, it wasn’t too dark or too much light. I also have to give them credit for using a spotlight on the one talking at several times. Not to mention a scene where Romeo got into a fight with one of the Capulet’s when the light started flashing while they were fighting, due to the darkening when I didn’t see anything reminded of a comic where you see one thing in this picture and something else in another. The same however, did not apply to the costumes. Due to the “modern” clothes, it felt like they forgot to change costumes, I can’t say I’m impressed. They even wore bubble wrap at the end, it didn’t make things better. Maybe that’s meant to be some futuristic fashion but it rather looked like something you would find it dustbin, which made me think about their budget. I would prefer if they wore clothes like you did then, not what you would wear today for variance
