The weather and environment play a significant role in chapter one, as it reveals characters’ personalities and sets the mood for the story. Nick establishes the mood for the story by mentioning the sunny summer; symbolizing positive energy and fresh starts. He also uses the weather to contrast the personalities of the different characters when he visits Daisy’s house; “A breeze blew through the room….” (Fitzgerald 8), but this sense of relaxation is interrupted, “Then there was a boom as Tom Buchanan shut the rear windows and the caught wind died out about the room…” (Fitzgerald 8). This breeze represents freedom and the women’s easy-going lives, but when Tom closes the window it signifies that he has more of a restrictive personality. Overall,
F. Scott Fitzgerald was born on September 24, 1896. He was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and his parents were both born in Maryland and Irish. You could say he grew up very lower middle class. Fitzgerald’s views of relationships began at an early age. It was interesting because many of his best books came from the idea that women & men relationships is just a game with one person ending up being a winner. He claimed to forever have a jazz-age attitude that would stick with him for life, and it worked. F. Scott Fitzgerald died December 21, 1940 at the young age of 44.
Weather correlating to the mood of a character in a novel, or any piece of media for that matter, is not a revolutionary concept. For example, in any given movie scene where the protagonist is emotionally devastated, it is likely to be downpouring. However, the depth and effectiveness to which this motif is utilized in The Great Gatsby by Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald in relation to the character Jay Gatsby is truly masterful - it goes past the occasional, simple pathetic fallacy. While Fitzgerald is unafraid to be strong in the use of this motif, abandoning an unadulterated sense of reality in favor of emotional profundity, the motif of weather is used with a nuance so that it makes a greater point through Gatsby as a character. Fitzgerald

In reality the weather and environment play a part in how people interact with one another and in some cases it can even influence a person's mood. Therefore, weather also plays a similar role in literature as it does in reality. The only difference is that in literature the significance of weather impacts the story more and has much sub-contextual meaning than what is just portrayed on the surface level. Within different stories different types of weather can symbolize different things. In the novel, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Fitzgerald uses fog to serve as a symbol for Gatsby’s and Daisy’s relationship. His choice for using fog as a symbol of their relationship is because it obscures Gatsby’s vision of the green light on Daisy’s house which, for Gatsby, it acts as a beacon letting him know where Daisy is. Also, it acts as a method of foreshadowment.

In the climactic passage of Chapter 5 of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, former lovers Gatsby and Daisy see each other for the first time in many years, and what follows is an awkward encounter that offers insight to the two character’s contrasting personalities and a major theme of the book. When they are first reunited, Gatsby and Daisy seem to be acutely aware of the time that has passed between them and are unable to control their feelings, which leads them to both use defense mechanisms to deflect their true emotions. Fitzgerald uses the symbol of weather and the symbol of time throughout the scene to establish a theme of change and uses sparse dialogue between Daisy and Gatsby to shed light on the true nature of their relationship, which is full of joy and longing.
Throughout F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald uses an ensemble of characters to portray different aspects of the 1920s. The characters’ occupations and lifestyles represent the corruption, carefreeness, and prosperity of the Roaring Twenties. Perhaps most striking of this ensemble is the pompous bigot Tom Buchanan and the novel’s namesake Jay Gatsby. Set in the fictional towns of West Egg and East Egg on Long Island, New York, in the summer of 1922, the novel revolves around the protagonist Nick Carraway when he moves to West Egg. Upon arriving, he reconnects with his cousin Daisy Buchanan, and her husband Tom. He also encounters his mysterious neighbor Jay Gatsby, and eventually learns that Gatsby is an admirer of
In F. Scott Fitzgerald's, The Great Gatsby, some of the characters had opened up, adding another layer of depth to their characterization. The mysterious persona of Jay Gatsby was revealed in the following chapters by Fitzgerald, but in order to maintain his mysterious essence, Gatsby did not open up completely. Gatsby only wanted to tell his acquaintances what he wanted them to know, but he only told the truth in increments, therefore he would have a positive social presence which he used to his advantage as a manipulative tool. Gatsby was also a very cautious character, he only elaborated on truths that he was comfortable speaking about. Whenever Gatsby did end up submitting to his moral issue however, Fitzgerald would bail him out

The hot weather symbolises the rising heat and tension between the characters and how uncomfortable they are with each other. It also shows the confusion between characters about what to do throughout the day and just what in the world is going to happen. The 5 friends are probably miserable and tired and a conflict might boil through seeing as how tense the situation is with all of them. This could also mean that there might be a fight later on, something might blow up, or Tom might realise that Daisy is having an affair with Gatsby, the light finally dawning on him. Gatsby’s plan/dream could be in ruins. The fact that Daisy kept mentioning about the heat throughout the chapter and how confused and frustrated she acts suggests
