If you plant a tree it will grow, however, if that seed is never planted nothing at all will develop. The same is true with evil; evil begets evil. A spark of evil can snowball into further evil. The spark the witches produced caused Lady Macbeth’s corrupt side to come about and she instigated Macbeth into killing Duncan. The witches are held responsible for all these evil events. Someone who initiates something is responsible. The three witches are responsible for instigating Macbeth. When they first meet Macbeth they say “All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Glamis!/ All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Cawdor!/ All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!”(I.iii.51-53). They tell Macbeth that he will be Thane of Cawdor and then become king. After hearing the witches’ prophecies, Macbeth is confused how it is possible for him to become Thane of Cawdor and king especially when the Thane of Cawdor is alive. Through the prophecies, they plant the idea in Macbeth’s head to kill Duncan. Macbeth then informs his wife, Lady Macbeth, in a letter which leads to her corrupt side coming out. Lady Macbeth has an ambition so she pushes and convinces Macbeth by taunting him and calling him a coward which leads him to making sure that he kills both Duncan and Banquo. The witches’ prophecies trigger the spiral of events. Because of the witches the powerful force of ambition is unleashed within Lady Macbeth. Lady MacBeth first schemes the treachery of murdering the King. She manipulates her husband and convinces him to go through with the murder. But before the murder, Macbeth is still a good man.
