Education according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, “should be a means to empower children and adults alike to become active participants in the transformation of their societies.” UNESCO states, “values, attitudes and behaviors” should be the focus of learning so that people can cohabitate in a diverse society. Education has a significant role in society; children learn societal and cultural norms, values, and are taught how to be successful, active and productive members of a society. A society’s role in education is just as important as the role of education in a society. We all know the saying, “it takes a village,” this means it is the responsibility of the society to assist, guide and support in the education of its students.
The role of teacher is complex and multifaceted. The classroom should be student centered, individuality is fundamental to education, and students learn best from what they find relevant to experiences in their own lives. Teachers should create curriculum based on the needs, experiences, interests, and abilities of their students. Students should learn problem solving skills that are useful in real life scenarios and be taught that education is a lifelong process, not just a preparation for growing up and moving out into society. The role of a teacher is to be a facilitator of learning, but also much more. Teachers are role models, mentors, counselors, friends, disciplinarians, and a shoulder to cry on. I
