In 1973, the United States Supreme Court decided a case that would instantly bring controversy to the entire nation. Roe v. Wade would decide if an abortion should be made legal and whether the woman would get to make the decision. Since 1973, the year abortion was legalized, there have been over 56 million abortions. Abortion is defined as the termination of a pregnancy by removing the fetus or embryo. There are two different types of abortion: induced abortion and spontaneous abortion. Induced abortion is the deliberate termination of a fetus before it can sustain life outside of the uterus. A spontaneous abortion, also known as a miscarriage, is where the fetus is killed unintentionally before the 20th week of pregnancy. Both induced abortions and spontaneous abortions can have lasting effects on the mother whether she chose to have the abortion or whether her body terminated the pregnancy naturally. Pro-choice advocates believe that the fetus is inferior to the woman’s body and that the woman should come first. On the other side of the argument, pro-life supporters believe that life begins as soon as the sperm and the egg meet. Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines a fetus as a developing human from usually two months after conception to birth. It defines an embryo as a human or animal in the early stages of growth when it’s basic structure and organ development is forming. Even though most people think the scientific terms, fetus or embryo, is talking about the cells or tissues, the terms really refer to the stages of development. This means that the fetus is not just a small piece of tissue, but a human life. “The beginning of a single human being from a biological viewpoint is a simple, straightforward matter—- the beginning is conception.” (Bowes).
