2 The community in Los Angeles, in particular of those in minority communities felt forced into a situation that the only way for them to be taken seriously was for them to riot. Strain theory holds that crime is created out of desperation that communities have for not reaching societies goal, because they are not given the means of reaching it, thus they have to succeed in alternative ways. The Los Angeles riots reacted in alternative ways to the verdict of Rodney King, as they were displeased by the results. The Los Angeles police department and governmental officials did not give the community members much room to calm down after the news, and much worse added fuel to the fire. Strain theory states that crime is created out of desperation of not meeting societies goals, because they lack the resources. The police and government officials in Los Angles targeted the African American community, and made them feel subjugated. An, example is Police Chief Darrel Gates, a controversial governmental figure who targeted Anglo-Saxon individuals for police. Even though he was not like either by the Los Angeles community, and Police departments, because the police chief stayed for life he maintained his power over Los Angeles. He was aggressive supporting paramilitary tactics, and prejudice of African American communities. His actions dominated the life of African-Americans, as they were always seen as suspicious and under police presence. The police department with the support of Police Chief Darrel Gates became much more militarized and willing to use tanks and other tactics in minority communities, destroying homes and lives as collateral damage in the war on drugs.
