Rock’-n’-roll is constantly changing and evolving into specific sub-genres. Sub-genres break down a general genre of music into a more specific and sophisticated type of that category. For example, rock has many different branches including soft rock, southern rock, and hard rock. Rock in general typically has a lead electric guitar with a vigorous 4/4 beat produced by the drums. However, in the sub-genre of southern rock, a southern country rhythm is combined with a touch of rock and roll. Hard rock separates itself by sustaining a loud, powerful, voluminous sound, whereas soft rock maintains a slower and smoother rhythm while still possessing the rock tone. Each sub-genre contributes their own uniqueness while also preserving rock characteristics …show more content…
These diverse sub-genres are increasing rock’s popularity in society, pleasing everyone’s own interest in music. The subtle differences and the variety of soft rock, southern rock, and hard rock, allow a larger assortment of people to enjoy rock as a whole.
Soft rock is classified in the rock genre, however, it has a much more melodic sound than that of a hard or metal rock and puts more emphasis on the lyrics instead of the beat. Rather than a forceful and rough beat like the more prominent style of rock, soft rock tends to come across the listener in a smoother and more fluid tone. The themes of soft rock also greatly differ from everyday rock-’n’-roll. Most soft rock artists tend to lean towards the very popular subject of love. The pioneers of the music industry that fall under the sub-genre of soft rock include, Elton John, Billy Joel, Fleetwood Mac, and even some songs

This sub-genre originated in the southern United States from the inclusive rock genre. Southern rock has a very strong lead beat that focuses mainly on vocals and the electric guitar. Just like country music, southern rock tells a story and that is what makes the lyrics and vocals so important. Southern rock is a lot like country music as a whole, but separates itself by being louder, adding a heavier beat, and speeding up the song. Southern rock maintains a rock aspect by its amplified electric guitar lead and continues to carry a solid beat. Southern rock started to develop in the mid-1960’s and began to hit its peak in the 1970’s. The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Outlaws, The Marshall Tucker Band, and ZZ Top were a few of the great early bands in southern rock. Southern rock is still a popular genre including Kid Rock, Shakey Graves, Drive-By Tuckers, and Blackberry Smoke. Atlanta Rhythm Section, a very popular southern rock band, is known for one of their most popular songs, Homesick, released in 1981. This song is categorized as southern rock due to its hard driven beat and the lead electric guitar feature. This song begins with an electric solo that supports the classification of rock, but then begins to add riffs to compliment the electric guitar solo with a touch of the south. Throughout the song, the lyrics contribute to the anthem’s southern side by
Rock and roll (often written as rock & roll or rock 'n ' roll) is a genre of popular music that originated and evolved in the United States. The music we know as rock and roll emerged as a defined musical style in the mid 1950s, even though a form of it had been on the horizon for at least a decade or so. A quarter of the American population moved during World War II, and that is what brought southern, rural, sacred and secular traditions into contact with urban-based music and its audiences. Rock and roll drew on many different styles. It derived most directly from the rhythm and blues music of the 1940s, which it developed from earlier blues, boogie-woogie, jazz and swing music. It was also influenced by gospel, country, western, and traditional folk music. With the combinations of all of these genres of music, that help to create this new style of music excited a worldwide generation of young listeners. Even though it had the attention of young listeners it started to upset the already established social, cultural and musical authorities. With this new music style coming into full affect along with new dances and people having voicing out their own opinion caused a lot of turmoil. Many people began to question this new genre of music and labeled it as the devil music while other loved it and couldn’t help but dance
Rock ‘N’ Roll started from Southern Blacks slaves that migrated to the North. They brought in a sound of Rhythm and Blues. In it they talked about their hardships in the plantation and to end discrimination. It represented the life of the African-American working in the south. Rhythm and blues was a slow steady beat; it had a 2-4 beat drum and

Rock n roll came from the mix of country and rhythm and blues. The origins of rock n roll can be traced back to when the great migration brought African Americans to the U.S. with them they brought a different sound for music. After the great migration, new genres of music began to become very popular in the late 1920’s and 1930’s. These genres of music influenced the development of rock n roll such as blues, boogie-woogie, jump blues, jazz, and gospel music “Rock n Roll developed from blues and country so no one invented rock n roll” ( Tim Janis) Rock n roll was definitely influenced by African American roots. The African music tradition of storytelling using music of African origins was a big influence on the creation of blues and other genres. These genres of music soon developed into rhythm and blues. Later
This became to be known as the famous R&B. It is said that R&B “mixed the rural sound of the blues with the electrified edge and raucous rhythms of the city streets” (Yudkin 262). Key singers and musicians of this type of music were Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard. Their singing and playing were characterized by speedy songs with an insatiable beat, and screaming lyrics. The other early influence on rock and roll was country music, in which R&B was mixed with western/country vibes. Famous country music singers/musicians of that time were Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly, and the early sound of Elvis
Although music can sometimes sound the same, there are very different genres. Jazz and Rock n’ Roll are as closely related as they are different. Jazz is often thought to be mostly of saxophones, even though the saxophone has a nice jazz feel, but are they really the most common jazz instrument? Rock n’ Roll music is thought of as deep bass, when really the bass is not the only guitar playing. Misconceptions are made about both genres, even if they are half true. While the differences can be slight or extreme, they are two very similar genres of music.
“The cliché is that rock & roll was a melding of country music and blues, and if you are talking about, say, Chuck Berry or Elvis Presley, the description, though simplistic, does fit. But the black inner-city vocal-group sound . . . had little to do with either blues or country music in their purer forms.
This week we learned about many genres of music, some similar some different. The two genres I want to compare and contrast are Rock and Blues. When you hear rock music, you picture electric guitars, amplified sounds, and complex styles of play. But if you take a deeper look you would probably be surprised to learn that rock would not even have existed without simple 12-bar forms, antiphonal textures, or “walking bass lines” used in much blues music. Though Rock and Blues are distinctly different they have a lot of similarities that most likely go unnoticed. Rock and Blues were developed at almost the same exact time around the late 19th century. Blues originated from African American folk music and like Blues, rock music style can also be
Rock and roll was born in the late 1950s. Primary influenced from southern artists like Elvis Presley and Bill Haley, this new genre of music though
Each one is based on the person listening to their own version of rock and roll. Music in itself cannot be given any definition based on the variety and rock and roll is just one variety. Different generations have different stand points. From the beginning of what is known as rock and roll throughout the years has changed too much that there is no way to put a definite meaning to the words rock and roll.
the distinction is somewhat fuzzy, rock music is not exactly the same as rock and roll. Rock ‘n’ roll brings up memories of two-minute, Top 40 “singles” of the fifties era. Drawn
Music junkies, concert connoisseurs, and vinyl vigilantes everywhere need to know about the similarities and differences between the alternative rock and indie rock genres. The genres alternative and indie are terms sometimes used interchangeably, but their origins are indeed differing. There has been a varying progression of media platforms used to listen to these genres among the past few decades due to society’s social and economic changes. In terms of instrumental progressions and technological buildups in the music world, the instruments and stylings used to define these genres has changed as well. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, alternative rock is defined as “a style of rock music characterized as unconventional, or outside the mainstream which resonated powerfully with a generation weathering an economic recession.” Conversely, Oxford explains the term indie as “the deliberately unpolished or
Many artists created a new form of music through the influence of the black artists. The first signs of this influence appeared in the music of Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly. It carried on to artists like Bob Dylan, The Beatles, and various other musicians.4 A new form of music emerged, rock and roll. This new style of music was fueled by emotion. One of the first stages in the development of rock and roll was sacrificing musical complexity for the sake of capturing an audience. The jazz and blues songs that were popular before rock and roll emerged, consisted of several chords and elaborate rhythms, while rock and roll songs are comprised of only three or four chords and very simple rhythms.5 More direct expressions of emotions were used, and lyrics of personal and political significance were brought into the mix. The relationship between artists and their audiences changed. Fans related to the musicians’ opinions rather than simply the style of the music. As a result of the bold lyrics, a general respect for musicians
Rock and roll has developed a long way throughout the years from a dance craze in the 1950’s to a political and cultural landscape that is recognized worldwide. Rock and roll has come to define the roots of teenage rebellion, people who don’t follow the norms, and have disrespect for authority. The style of rock and roll itself is a melting pot of music, a combination of sounds that include jazz, country, blues, ragtime, gospel, swing, classical, and ethnic music. It can be a simple variation of three chords to a complex chromatic scale combination. It can convey emotions such as love, hate, fear, lust, sadness, joy, disillusion, or a strong sense of reality. Many things can be said about rock but the fact is that it is the most widely
Rock has had different effects on different countries. Europe was the most influenced by rock because of its many rising bands from Liverpool and London.
