Rock and Roll all began in the 1950’s and we have the amazingly talented pioneer Chuck Barry to thank for that. Though Chuck Berry was the start of it all, Elvis Presley was the rebel that gave Rock and Roll a name and a face! This new genre of music took off once Elvis Presley began performing and the youth of the time could not get enough. Elvis Presley had introduced and widely popularized lyrics and dancing of a sexual nature. There was an unfortunate downfall of the rock stars in the ‘50’s due to the outrage of the adult community. Rock and Roll in the 1960’s was reborn thanks to the incredibly famous rock band known as The Beatles. The Beatles appearance on Ed Sullivan’s television show in early 1964 launched Beatlemania in the United States, which led to the “British Invasion”. Another one of the big British bands that brought Rock and Roll back to life were The Rolling Stones. This band was also a part of the “British Invasion” of the United States. The peace signs, long hair, tie dye, incense, and hippie values were popular everywhere at this point. So the rock music styles of the 1970’s traced their influences from the late sixties. A few of these artists for example, Yes, The Eagles, The Allman Brothers Band, Steely Dan, and Alice Cooper. By the late 1970’s the rise of Black Pop, Reggae, and Disco had begun. A notable shift that took place in this era is Black Pop or Funk. James Brown was the father of Funk. His aggressive singing and rhythmic groove created what we know as funk today. A prime example of an artist of the Reggae style that was introduced in this decade was the one and only Bob Marley. Disco emerged into the mainstream in the mid to late seventies with artists like The Bee Gees and Donna Summer. Disco was a complete and utter disgrace to any original artist and the Rock and Roll community would not stand for
