Robert H. Schuller said, “Tough times don’t last, but tough people do.” Tim from My Brother Sam is Dead is a young kid based on the American Revolution. The book shows examples of hardships he has experienced. Ponyboy from The Outsiders also relates to this as he is a young kid who has experienced many hardships such as losing family/friends. This shows that both of them have experienced hardship. With this information gathered, we can compare the two on how they are alike. Tim and Ponyboy are similar because they are both hardworking, brave, and loyal. Tim and Ponyboy are both hardworking. First, they both show this by helping their family. For example, “Sam, are you gonna help me with the milking” (11). Ponyboy helped his family by, “Then I heard Johnny scream and as …show more content…
For example, “Mother was in the kitchen and I’d been stoking up the fire” (171). Ponyboy helped around the house when, “The first one has to fix breakfast and the other two do the dishes” (104). These quotes mean that they both work hard around the house to assist their family’s. Hardworking traits are shown in both Tim and Ponyboy. Tim and Ponyboy are both brave. First, show this by risking their safety for others. For example, “Tim calls for his brother and hurls the bayonet into the air hoping it will land on the side of the wall where Sam awaits his execution” (187). Ponyboy shows this by, “I decided it would be more fair for me to help Dally since he could only use one arm” (122). These quotes mean that both Tim and Ponyboy are willing to risk their own safety for those they care about. Also, Tim and Ponyboy show bravery by standing up for what’s right. For example, “Both sides of the war act horribly and desperately, Tim understands this and realizes he doesn’t want to take a side” (147). Ponyboy also stands up for himself by saying, “I lie to myself”. But I never believe in me” (127). These quotes mean that this is how they stand up for
Ponyboy is a very good friend. He has a friend named Johnny who is also a greaser. Johnny is going through so much throughout the story. He runs away from his home because he heard his mother and father fighting like they always do. He goes to the park and he says, “I can’t take much more. I’ll kill myself or something.” Johnny hated that his parents fought so much and he didn’t want to be around it. His parents were neglectful and abusive, both
My Brother Sam is Dead is a young adult historical fiction by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier. The book realistically illustrates what happened in the American Revolution. Sam would steal his father’s gun for the war. Sam is a patriot and fought in the Revolutionary War. His father is a Loyalist and against Sam fighting in the Revolutionary War. Events that happen in the book are Lexington and Concord (April 19, 1775), Battle of Bunker Hill (June 17, 1775), and Mr. Meeker died (Sam’s father). In this essay, I will talk about the similarities and the differences events that happened in the books and reality.
Ponyboy talks about Johnny’s parents, “His father was always beating him up, and his mother ignored him”(12). Johnny’s parents are always mauling and berating him, so he stays away from home as much as he can. The gang treats Johnny like a younger brother and cares for him because his parents
In conclusion, I wanted to tell you that hard work pays off, because if you want to accomplish something do it. As you can see, Tim was not afraid to face that gang. And he conquered his fear and beat up a member. You don’t have to try everything just to be a hero or a man about everything, but do learn to face your fears. But this story was about Tim’s life experiences living in a bad neighborhood and how he dealt with
In addition, Tim is torn between both sides. He asks why Sam has to be not nice to Father and tells him that he had it nice; he had money for books and studies that Father sent him. He asks, “Listen, Sam, why do you always have to get into a fight with Father?” (Collier and Collier, 15). According to later chapters Tim looks up to both his father and brother. The split between father and brother causes his dilemma. After being torn between sides and fighting about the sides, it is evident that war tears families apart.
He had risked his life for kids that he didn't even know, showing his bravery and thoughtfulness. While on a field with Ponyboy, Johnny gazes at the sunset and recognizes Ponyboy’s help to find himself. “‘I never noticed colors and clouds and stuff until you kept reminding me about them.’”. Ponyboy made
Ponyboy was in trouble he was being drowned by Bob, Johnny needed to help, he killed Bob and after he said “I had to they were drowning you, Pony” he said with a scared tone in his voice. How this shows, the theme is that Johnny would
However, Pony was the closest thing to a family that Johnny had because of the fact that his parents were always fighting. " [Teens] turns to peers for...security" (Hartwell-Walker).
Ponyboy thought that the Socs lives were perfect but they weren’t they had problems just like the Greasers did. When Ponyboy reads the final letter that Johnny wrote to him that has part that
An example is, “Darry is six-feet-two, and broad-shouldered and muscular.” (Hinton, 7). In this part of the story Ponyboy is describing Darry, it shows Darry is muscular because Ponyboy clearly says it himself. Another example would be, “...he roofs houses and he's always trying to carry two bundles of roofing up the ladder.” (Hinton, 15). This quote from the story shows Darry is strong because carrying two bundles of roofing is heavy on it's on and it would be harder to carry that up a ladder, and to be able to do that you would have to be strong.
Johnny bought peroxide and told Pony he was going to cut and bleach Pony’s hair. Ponyboy can only see his way of things and has trouble relating to others’ actions. For example he thinks Darry hates him because Darry is always hard on him. Eventually the boys end up having to return to the city after they save children from the church that’s burning down. During the process of saving the kids from the fire Johnny is struck with a piece of flaming lumber that falls on him.
Ponyboy Jonny and Dally saw that and fastly run into the church to save the four children. “I didn’t pay any attention, although pieces of the old roof were crashing down too close for comfort. I snatched up another kid hoping he didn’t bite and dropped him with out waiting to
After Johnny kills Bob, and Johnny and Ponyboy head to Jay Mountain, the author wants the reader to take away a recurring theme in the story which is loyalty and friendship. Throughout this story, the author exemplifies many acts of loyalty and friendship. One of the most important acts was when Ponyboy leaves town with Johnny. Ponyboy could have easily gone home and ran away from his friend when it got tough, but instead he stuck with him even when times were hard. “Money. Maybe a gun? A plan. Where in the world would we get these things?” This shows how Pony’s first instinct for when Johnny killed Bob was to help
He demanded when he was in hospital and his mother wanted to see him, ‘tell her to leave me alone.’ This means that Johnny did not want to see his parents, he despises them because they had always neglected and abused him. As a result, Ponyboy is not the only one who changes as Johnny altered his emotions concerning his parents
Ponyboy sometimes would get bullied by his older brothers and sometimes he would leave the house for days .It reminded me of one time where my older brothers were gonna go out to watch a movie and did not wanna take me i ended up getting mad cause they were just laughing at me and i broke the windshield . Ponyboy was pretty big for his age and would always stand up for himself and was also trustworthy toward his gang . I was like that most the time i wouldn't let myself get bullied or pushed around by my brothers.
