Service members in the military are faced with tough decisions on a daily basis. Despite the difficult situations, the majority of service members will opt to the right thing. However; there are several service members who will elect the easy path and end up choosing the wrong decision, even though they know the right thing to do. I agree with General. H. Norman Schwarzkopf that people know the right thing to do and that it is difficult to execute because of a person’s belief, risky behavior, and integrity. Knowing right from wrong is easy but a person’s character can complicate the situation. A person’s belief can be molded by their community, friends, and or parents. I stand firmly behind my beliefs and will take the tough road to making …show more content…
Alcohol consumption is a major concern of the military. Not only does a service member risky behavior jeopardize their lives, but it can also dramatically impact others. During my tenure at Fort Knox, I had two friends who utilized a risky behavior. Both did not have a drinking problem, but their risky behavior did not allow them to do what was right. My friends decided to remain at Knox on a four day weekend. While relaxing at the house, they decided to have a couple of drinks. One drink led to another and soon they became restless and decided to ride to Louisville for some late night parting in separate cars. Both were completely impaired and could not drive in a safe manner. As they approached the exit gate weaving from lane to lane, they were pulled over by the military police. My friends had made the military police blotter for driving while intoxicated. Their careers were over as they both were well over the blood alcohol concentration limit. Their credibility as an officer was destroyed and they were constantly trying to defend it. Their risky behavior had placed others in jeopardy and could have resulted in a serious car accident. My friends clearly understood what the right thing to do, but their risky behavior made it hard for them to do it. They knew the right thing to do was not to drink and
There are several repercussions for service members of all branches caught driving while intoxicated. Under Army Regulations, if a service member's BAC is between 0.05 and 0.079, their driving privileges and military driver’s license can be suspended for 90 days. If their BAC is 0.08 or more, the license will be revoked for a year. Two DUI convictions within five years will result in a five-year revocation of the license, and three alcohol-related traffic offenses will result in the permanent loss of their military driver’s license. To reinstate their driver's license after a DUI incident, service members must complete the ASAP training, take remedial drivers' training, and possess a valid state driver's license before they can obtain a letter from their commander recommending reinstatement. In addition to a license suspension, service members who are caught driving with a BAC of 0.05 or more may receive a General Officer Memorandum of Reprimand, which can be filed locally or in their permanent file. Those caught driving with a BAC of 0.1 or more are in violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice and face either a court-martial or, more commonly, a non-judicial action (Article 15) from their commander. Under Article 15, the maximum punishment could include for E-4 and below: loss of all rank to E-1, loss of half of one month's pay for two months, and up to 60 days of extra duties and restriction to the garrison.
Veterans and active duty military personnel face unique problems and special considerations when it comes to the abuse of alcohol. There is a drinking
Before Risk Assessment can be addressed we must first briefly discuss Risk Management (RM), the framework of which is where risk assessment resides for the United States Army. The Army uses RM to ensure mission accomplishment in current as well as future operations and applies to operations and non-operational activities (Department of the Army [ATP 5-19], 2014, p. 1-1). The Army process of RM utilizes five steps as part of its holistic approach to mitigate risks, but because this paper’s focus in on the Risk Assessment of the management solutions identified last week, it will only focus on the first two steps of RM, Identify the hazard and Assess the hazard.
Stay committed to your decisions, but stay flexible in your approach—Tony Robbins ((Malekzadeh) 236). According to our textbook Organizational decision making is when a person in authority identifies an important issue and carries out a process to make a choice that produces outcomes with consequence ((Malekzadeh) 511) President Clinton felt that he had to make this decision in order to help other because he was being forced by the House of Senate to adapt a policy or banned gays from the military completely. When soldiers where asked about Don’t ask don’t tell one stated “Under Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, I didn’t have a future. It wasn’t a matter of if I would be found out, it was a matter of when. And how much that would hurt myself, and my partner, and my family.” Many more soldiers when on to share their story and feeling but this great Organization Know as the US Military had just began a new and interesting path towards the future and change, but when would she the biggest on changes on October 1st 2016 when Gen. Mark Milley, chief of staff of the Army announced that transgender soldiers will now be able to serve within our formations and that they will be able to receive medical care to begin changing their gender identification, these only after five years that
Recognizing Marines who in the face of difficult decisions exhibit the courage to face the situation and exert a positive outcome has positive effects on the unit. The situation surrounding Sergeant Mitchell illustrates how rewarding an individual can have a positive effect on a unit. Lance Corporal Bowers could have continued past Sergeant Mitchell’s door; however, Lance Corporal Bowers acquired enough courage to face a sergeant, outside of his section, to prevent the possible loss of a Marine. Lance Corporal Bowers’ leadership chose to recognize him for his actions in front of the entire unit and afterwards had a genuine discussion about suicide and suicide attempts. Over the next few months, Marines from private to chief warrant officer chose to talk to their leadership about suicidal thoughts they were dealing with. When asked why they came forward, the consensus among these Marines was the leadership genuinely cared and would not jeopardize their career over how they were
13. Policies to limit alcohol abuse in the military are the best preventative to alcohol abuse. If the Defense Department is so intent of fighting alcohol abuse why does it make alcohol so readily available? Alcohol is tax free at post liquor stores and enlisted and officers clubs make drinking almost a mandatory facet of military life.
In the 1970’s, the topic of the legal drinking age grew very popular; most states decided to lower it from 21 to 18 because that was the age to vote and enlist in the army. However, during the 90’s the age was raised back to 21 (Drinking). This was because teens were the most common drunk drivers. “When the drinking age was raised”, there were positive effects, “the number of fatal crashes involving a young driver dropped significantly, from 61% in 1982 to 31% in 1995” (Christensen). But the argument is still here, if one can go to war, why should he or she not be able to take the edge off and indulge in alcoholic beverages? There are compelling arguments for each side, but the drinking age should not be lowered.
poor decision to drink and drive. Making wrong choices in the military not only affects
I would respond to many people argument with the fact that when you turn 18 you are given your rights, if you are a male you get draft papers. When you turn 18 you are able to go give your life and serve your country but you cannot consume alcohol. Driving under the influence has lead to many deaths not because people drive drunk but they have not witnessed the consequences. All though you cannot get rid of drinking under the influence completely, you can reduce it by providing a system to take drunkies home. In JBER AK if you live on base you can call taxis to bring you back onto base and to your house while the bar keeps your car safe and lets it stay there for you to pick up the next day. The average age for drinking around the world is 12 this actually disregards that drinking will stump the development of your brain which is actually false Binge drinking is what influences brain damage leading to other
* Advise the American soldiers to be wary and mindful of an individual’s inclination to be automatically and unthinkingly consistent. To be cognizant of situations where consistency is being used as a weapon of influence against them. Advise them to listen to their guts or be perceptive of the heart-of-heart signs - the feeling towards something that an individual experiences a split second before they intellectualize about it.
The reasons behind the amplified risks may involve the fact that soldiers returning from the combat zone may drink to drown out their sorrows, soothe the transition back on home soil after deployment and binge drink to cope with their everyday life struggles. While drinking may initially mask the distress of combat, in the end it may counteract with other serious problems.
Sometimes it is better to lose and do the right thing than to win and do the wrong thing.

have done. My mindset just have to always stay positive and do the right thing. Because if i do the wrong thing and one of my fellow battle buddies see me doing the wrong thing they might get the impression that doing the wrong thing is “cool” or okay which is not the impression i want to give off at all. Or it could make someone think of me as a bad soldier who dissent listen/follow instructions given by higher up and i would be looked down upon. Once thing that i have learned in my 4-5 months in being in the army is to lead by example and if I'm doing the wrong thing by not living by the army values I'm not saying a good example at all and not acting like a leader. If you don't lead by example you are just hurting yourself in the long run and not being
Whenever you evaluate right from wrong, you must stand up for what you consider is right no matter the circumstances. Unfortunately, many support the wrong and If you continue to let the wrong prevail, then you are as despicable as those who support it. The amount of dedication, determination, courage, and patience that is required to stand up for what you believe in is indescribable. Importantly, you must have the dedication to stand up for what you believe in otherwise there will be no change in this corrupt world. Moreover, a determination is just as important to possess; otherwise, you will
