They were very close to capturing their ultimate goal, Baghdad, the capital of Iraq. Also in June ISIS clashed with the Kurds. Even though the Kurds were Sunni, ISIS had taken over their land and the Kurds were not happy with this. On the 29th of June 2014 the group declares the establishment of a caliphate and renames itself to the Islamic State. At the the begginging of August the United States began to launch air strikes against the Islamic State. This prompted the start of the war aginst ISIS as many other countries joined in to stop their overule of Iraq and Syria. In late September a man named Man Haron Monis took 17 hostages at the lindt café in martin place. Monis made hostages make videos in support of the IS and to Tony Abbot, on Monis’ commands. Two people were killed in the seige after police stormed into the café. It was later found out that Man Monis had criminal records for sexual assualt. He was also a self
(CNN)Dozens of Yazidi women captured and enslaved by ISIS in 2014 have been moved from the Iraqi city of Mosul to Syria, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The monitoring group and US military officials have said ISIS militants are fleeing Mosul and heading for Raqqa, Syria, the de facto capital of ISIS, as Iraqi-led forces push to free the key Iraqi city from the terror group. Dozens of ISIS families have already arrived in Raqqa, the observatory said. Ethnic cleansing by ISIS has displaced, killed and enslaved hundreds of thousands of Iraqi Yazidis, members of an ancient ethnic and religious minority. Modern-day Iraq is the traditional homeland of the Yazidis. Islamic militants captured thousands of Yazidi women and children, and killed the men.

2. Isis is an Iraqi terrorist group who is trying to gain more control over the war torn country. The group has “a reputation for brutal rule in the areas that it controls”(CNN). Many innocent civilians have been killed due to the inhumane acts that this group has committed. They have been named “the most cash-rich militant group in the world”(CNN).
Unlike other terrorists groups whose main purpose is to enforce terrorism around the world, ISIS’ brutal strategies are how they defend their beliefs and protect their land (Chavez). ISIS has been able to obtain a majority of their land even with U.S. led coalition strikes and ground operations; they control much of the Tigris-Euphrates river basin, northern central Iraq, and northern Syria and seek to control every aspect of their land in each city and town, including essential roads, oil fields, and military facilities (BBC). “In March [of] 2015, the president of the International Committee of the Red Cross [estimated there to be] more than 10 million people [living under ISIS control]” (BBC). Inside areas where ISIS imposes its austere rendition of Sharia, another way to say the “framework” of Islam, women wear full veils, public beheadings are a daily routine, and those who refuse this way of life are forced to supply the government with a certain tax, convert, or choose death
Some of those major events are, in October 2006-al-Qaeda leader Abu Yyub al-Masri announces the creation of Islamic State of Iraq, and establishes AbuOmar al-Baghdadi as its leader. April 2010, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi becomes leader of ISIS after Abu Omar al- Baghdadi and Abu Ayyub al-Masri are killed in a joint U.S. Iraqi operation. In May 2014 ISIS kidnaps more than 140 Kurdish schoolboys in Syria, forcing them to take lessons in radical Islamic theology, according to London-based monitoring group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. In June 9-10 ISIS frees up to 1,000 prisoners. Then later in June on the 30th, The Pentagon announces the United States is sending an additional 300 troops to Iraq, bringing the total U.S. forces in Iraq to nearly 800. Furthermore, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, mostly known as “ISIS”, is the second deadliest terrorists group as of September 2016. ISIS declared itself to be a world wide caliphate in 2014. A caliphate is a reign under Muslim ruler and they hold religious, political, and military authority worldwide. Till this day, they have carried out over 100 attacks on over 25 different countries. One of the most recent attacks was the
The purpose of this paper is to gain knowledge and better understanding of what the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is, what their religious beliefs are, and why they consider their acts of terror to be acceptable in their beliefs. ISIS claims to support Islamic law and the various Islamic religious texts, but many experts and people within the Muslim community argue that ISIS has nothing to do with Islamic traditions at all. Rather, they are considered to be radical terrorists, using their own ideology to pursue a political agenda. To validate this research, ISIS’ definition and foundation, and ISIS’ religious beliefs will be discussed in further detail.
The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, is a militant group whose ultimate goal is to establish an Islamic State to govern and control much of the Islamic Middle East. This goal is not necessarily sinister in its general meaning. However, the means of going about establishing this Islamic State should be the cause of concern to the entire world.
Enticing young recruits from all over the world by using advanced technology and propaganda to persuade them to join in an exciting adventure. “They are far superior...when it comes to media technologies”(Jethro,CNN). For example, the ISIS propaganda team, HIJRAH, creates videos of explosions, gunfire, and killing that possibly troubled and insecure teenagers who are trying to find their way in the world, find exciting. The group continues to expand its terror on the Middle East.
Al-Qaeda and ISIS have killed innocent people in the name of their religious ideology. A report by Dr. Sebastian Gorka “The Islamic State and Information Warfare: Defeating ISIS and the Broader Global Jihadist Movement” Indicated that ISIS was a full-fledged self-insurgency and is, in fact, the world’s first transnational insurgency. Their recruiting capacity is astonishing. Even Boko Haram and his group joined forces with ISIS. According to Dr. Gorka, ISIS is one the richest terrorist groups in existence today. In addition, ISIS is expanding rapidly; one of their missions is to overthrow “all the governments in Muslim countries and gain control” (Habeck). Both ISIS and Al-Qaeda have committed horrendous crimes against men, women and children. ISIS has displaced hundreds of thousands of people and many are migrating to other countries and asking for
One major player in ISIS is Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. He is the leader of the Islamic extremist group in western Iraq, Libya, northeast Nigeria and Syria. Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has many nicknames including Abu Du´a. Supporters often refer to him as Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi al-Husseini al-Hashimi al-Qurashi. Abu Du´a keeps a low profile and it is unknown where he is located. Little is known about his family life, other than he has two wives named Asma Fawzi Mohammed al-Dulaimi and Israa Rajab Mahal A-Qaisi. ISIS (ISIL or Islamic State) has captured and beheaded many American journalists and citizens. One by the name of James Foley. James was abducted on November 22, 2012. He died on August 19, 2014 after being beheaded by the group. James was 38 when
The group that has captured vast stretches of land in Iraq and Syria, uses appalling methods of killing including bulldozing, throwing people from buildings, beheading, and burning alive. Also, the terrorist organization has killed many people in bomb attacks, often through suicide bombers.
It has been confirmed that IS was trying to prevent people from fleeing the city and had directed some of them towards buildings likely to be targeted by missiles or air strikes. Also, at the moment the location of IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is unheard-of. The crisis currently in Mosul is a matter worrying the U.S. According to the NY Times Article, “Battle for Mosul Tests Obama Strategy to Shift Fight’s Burden From U.S.”, by Mark Landler and Eric Schmitt, Obama’s doctrine of aiding other countries militarily rather than leading every fight is being challenged more than any other time. “... Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi was “calling the shots.” But the reality is that roughly half of the 5,000 American troops now in Iraq are likely to be involved in the operation, which could eventually require 30,000 Iraqi and Kurdish troops.” said the White
ISIS or Islamic State is a militant movement that has conquered territory in western Iraq and eastern Syria. In June 2014, they seized territories in Iraq’s Sunni heartland, including Mosul and Tikrit. The Islamic State proclaimed itself a caliphate, claiming exclusive political, and theological authority over the world’s Muslims. Its state-building project, however, has been
for aid once again. The Obama administration suggested that Maliki first work to fix the issues in his country by restoring the government. What Maliki truly wanted was money from the U.S. government. With the Iraqi weakened Isis gained traction in major cities, Mosul, Qayyarah, Al Shirqat, and Hawigah are just a few. The terrorist organization even went on to capture Tirkrit, the hometown of Sadum Hussain. The group did mass executions of those who opposed them, the group turned out to be tech savvy and would record these to be posted on various different platforms. Isis’s leader, Baghdadi, used this to his advantage by airing a sermon, once it aired hundreds more joined their terror movement. Isis became a threat to national peace almost overnight, it is astonishing how quickly they were able to mobilize with the use of stolen American weapons and the internet. What is an even bigger threat to peace is their final vision for all that they are doing. Al-Qaeda seemed unorganized as opposed to this group, Isis envisions having its own country.
