Throughout the years, there have been many rises to power and dictators. Some of them being good and some of them being bad. Everyone remembers the bad ones such as, Hitler or The Roman Empire. But, there are some that go unrecognized such as, Rafael Leonidas Trujillo. On April 25th, 2018 Erick Davila a 31-year-old black male was executed in the Texas State Prison for two murders. The victims were two black females, one a five-year-old named Queshawn and her Grandmother Annette. The killings happened at a children’s birthday party in Fort Worth Texas with intended target of Jeffery Stevenson a local gang rival of Erick. Erick was on death row 9 years prior to his execution doing everything he could to get the ruling overturned due to his claims of drug use. The U.S. Supreme Court rejected his pleas due to evidence of him having intentions to kill a various amount of people. Erick claimed to mistakenly kill the two victims while intending to kill two other gang rivals.

As a child, I was simultaneously immersed in three completely different cultures. My mother was Chinese, yet spoke Vietnamese, my father was white, and I lived in a predominantly Spanish community. These contrasting lifestyles and cultures truly showed me the difference between a public and a private identity, and the importance behind bilingualism in the world today. However, before I can recount what I’ve learned, we must first discuss two contrasting concepts about bilingualism from two very accomplished and controversial writers: Martín Espada and Richard Rodriguez.

Though, he only attained an elementary education, Trujillo entered in the military in 1918. By 1929, Trujillo became The Commander and Chief of the National Army of the Dominican Republic. Trujillo then assumed the presidency in 1930 after eliminating any major threat to his presidency.
