“Nothing is more singular about this generation than its addiction to music” (Bloom 68). While every person in the world knows this to be true, no one stops to consider whether the music society listens to is actually good for the mind. What people don’t realize is that music affects people’s morals, culture, education, laws, and the way society thinks. Music has proved to be helpful, but no one focuses on that aspect of it anymore. The people that music affects the most only care if they can dance to it.

Many rap and ‘cool’ songs are about men using women and having absolute control over them as if they were property. Most songs refer to females in a derogatory fashion to assert subordination. Some songs tell stories of how beating up women makes men more powerful. These songs influence society’s perception of women as a whole. When they are exploited because of the sexually charged, male-dominant worldview, women are held back from realizing their full potential as strong, respected, smart human beings. These views cause women to feel the need to fit into the description laid out for them by society. No one cares about the message being portrayed through all of this though. In fact, these songs are considered so normal in today’s society that women will sing and dance to them without a problem. While there may be a few forms of music left that are still considered wonderful, the other 95% of it throws the helpful purposes down the drain. The music business knows that a song is usually listened to because it has an enjoyable beat. They could stick a terrible singer in front of an awesome beat and the song would become one of the top ten of the month. The consumers of the song wouldn’t even realize that they might be singing along to a song about abuse or alcohol. There are a few artists left that are helpful to society, but their songs are left in the classroom.
Education obviously promotes music. Most schools have music as an elective like orchestra or as an enrichment class that all of the students take. Some schools even make it mandatory for every student enrolled to take up an instrument. The explanation for this being many adults believe that classical music makes kids intelligent (Bloom 69). Music also helps many children learn their letters and dates. For some reason, children absorb music like a sponge and after only a couple times of hearing a song, they already know most of the lyrics.
