Josh Reynolds Dr. Esch English 111-07 October 8th, 2017 Ruff Life In the Rhetorical Situation, Lloyd F. Bitzer argues that what makes a situation rhetorical is similar to that which constitutes a moral action as he writes that, “an act is moral because it is an act performed in a situation of a certain kind; similarly, a work is rhetorical because it is a response to a situation of a certain kind”. (3) “By defining the rhetorical situation in this way, Bitzer further contends that rhetoric is a means to altering reality”. (4) “It is through the use of discourse that one is capable of changing reality through thought and action”. Charleston Animal Society is involved with non-profit organizations that are working to make our world a better place. Whether it is working with children, the elderly, hurting bodies, hurting souls, or the environment, non-profit volunteers, workers, and organizations fight for justice, equality, and hope. In this case Charleston Animal Society works to fulfill its mission by caring for pet parents and pets, providing positive outcomes for at-risk animals, and serving all victims of animal cruelty. And just like any other important phenomenon, non-profiteering is a socially sustained reality. That is, it is made up of real-life people in real-life situations, working together to create and sustain an organization and hopefully working together to create positive change. Charleston Animal Society utilizes both its website and its television advertisements to encourage people to participate in the organization either by donating or adopting. Charleston Animal Society’s website’s organization, content, and layout work primarily to entice visitors to donate money. An examination of the webpage shows the site builders’ careful planning of the design elements. Visitors cannot avoid the large rectangle across the top of the page containing a slideshow of four different pictures. Each of the pictures, a close-up of a dog or cat that has been rescued by the organization, shows a pet with large and sad eyes, forcing the visitor to make eye
In reading Lloyd F. Bitzer's essay The Rhetorical Situation, my understanding is that there are several components needed to complete a rhetorical situation-- including the situation. According to Bitzer, if there isn't a situation existing that compels an exigency-- the rhetoric will be empty. I agree with Bitzer's viewpoint. He points out how "rhetoric is essentially related to a situation". Lloyd Bitzer also goes on to say that if there is no situation, there will be no response or utterance from the audience, and it is most important to invite a compelling need to have an utterance. Bitzer also implies that during a speech, the response has to fit the situation, have relevance, and only this will make the rhetoric significant. Overall,
In his article, “The Rhetorical Situation,” Lloyd Bitzer defines and elaborates on rhetorical situation. He writes, “Rhetorical situation may be defined as a complex of persons, events, objects, and relations presenting an actual or potential exigence which can be completely or partially remove if discourse, introduced into the situation, can so constrain human decision or action as to bring about the significant modification of the exigence” (6). To put it simply, a rhetorical situation is some response to a certain situation (Bitzer 3). Bitzer also explains that there are three parts to any rhetorical situation: the exigence, the audience, and the constraints. These three components exist before any discourse is created or presented (6.)

The rhetorical situation refers to “a situation in which people’s understanding can be changed through messages.” (Zarefsky, 12). The rhetorical situation analysis consists of four elements: audience, occasion, speaker and speech, each assessing the quality of speech. In this essay, I will analyze the rhetorical situation of the historical speech “The Challenger Address” delivered by the 40th president of the United States, Ronald Reagan.
Bitzer gives 7 conditions to determine if a rhetorical situation exists. Based upon Bitzer’s seven fold criteria model, Paul’s letter can be classified as a rhetorical situation. It also can be classified as a rhetorical situation because it contains an exigence, and audience and constraints, the constituents of a rhetorical situation. Paul crafts this letter in response to his situation and uses rhetoric to persuade his audience to a certain course of action.

While in a debate Donald trump and Barack Obama, Donald asks what is the true meaning of rhetoric. I said “Mr. Trump, Rhetoric is a language which has persuasive content which is a form of lying but also lacks meaning or truthfulness.” He then asked me to give an example of rhetoric and I said “approaching a clerk at a store and they ask will you help support Donald trump’s campaign by adding $5 to your total amount.” Trump said would please provide a definition for rhetor, and I said yes but with a slight agitation in my voice because of the way he is asking me the questions. I said “a rhetor is someone who is speaking in the language of rhetoric”. Trump asked for an example and I said “a rhetor is like a salesman.”
How does Wood define rhetoric? Wood defines rhetoric as situations that motivate issues and arguments. Analyzing rhetorical situation is an important critical reading strategy that can be used as a tool for analysis throughout the reading process. Moreover, rhetorical situation is a potent critical thinking strategy that can help the writer plan and write a better argument.
A rhetorical situation arises whenever a rhetor (either a speaker or a writer) sees a need to communicate with an audience in order to accomplish a goal. The rhetorical situation is the set of related factors whose interaction creates and influences a discourse—which may take the form of a speech or a piece of writing. The rhetorical situation is the environment in which the discourse will exist and
Leonardo DiCaprio Speech at the Paris Agreement Signing Ceremony Nandini Avula I have seen cities like Beijing choked by industrial pollution. Ancient Boreal forests in Canada that have been clear cut and rainforests in Indonesia that have been incinerated. In India I met farmers whose crops have literally been washed away by historic flooding. In America I have witnessed unprecedented droughts in California and sea level rise flooding the streets of Miami.
In Grant-Davie’s article “Rhetorical Situations and Their Constituents” he quotes Bitzer who defined rhetorical situation as “a complex of persons, events, objects, and relations presenting an actual or potential exigence which can be completely or partially removed if discourse, introduced into the situation, can so constrain human decisions or action as to bring about the significant modification of the exigence” (350). Many articles in the news use rhetorical situations to have an effect on their audience to do something about the issue. Politics, for example, uses rhetoric to persuade the audience to take the side of an individual candidate or even battling companies will use rhetoric in articles about their products so that the public will choose them over a different company. Rhetoric can be found all over the news and while doing research I came upon the article “Are We Fracking Away our Health?” To analyze the rhetoric of this article, we must look at the exigence, audiences, constraints, and any unforeseen ramifications of the article.
The history of rhetorical Invention is a long one that has been looked at in different dimensions and forms. Thus, with this vast history “invention” managed to claim different views from different rhetoricians on how it’s implemented and understood. To go further in describing my point of view I need to backtrack some of the views and notions that took invention to different venues in the history of rhetoric. Therefore, this paper will work to identify the arguments that plunged invention into “Current Traditional Rhetoric” and the “ New Rhetoric”. These, fields will only work to help recognize how invention has taken shape in the margins of “Second language Writing”. Thus, I being my search by introducing how the term “Invention” have delivered

Lloyd Bitzer employs that when trying to advocate for change individuals must illustrate a reality that will enable action. Individuals are often persuaded through measures that provoke a reaction and an urgency for change in a given situation. Bitzer discusses that a situation, specifically a rhetorical situation, comes into existence as
