Standing for what you believe in can be difficult, especially when you 're against the government. John Lewis held a speech during the march in Washington in 1963, where he confronts the unfairness that colored people face needs to stop, and it has to stop now. Lewis purpose is to appeal to the audience and at the same time send a message to the government. At first, he adopts an upset tone in order to show how unfair the government is, however, towards the end he is more encouraging, wanting people to partake in this act to help them get their freedom. He made this speech to encourage people who joined together to fight for their rights, and used these rhetorical strategies to connect to the audience.
Margaret Thatcher, the former British Prime Minister, reflected on the benign qualities of President Ronald Reagan, with whom she worked closely with in office, in her eulogy to the American public. Her purpose was to emphasize Reagan’s hardworking, reassuring, and friendly personality through the use of different rhetorical strategies, in order to create a sense of pathos. Thatcher was able to pay her respects and covey her meaningful message by using anecdotes, parallelism, and contrast.
“I am not here to represent Leonidas. His actions speak louder than my words ever could”, although Queen Gorgo believes this to be true, it is evident that her words still make quite the impact. The speech that was chosen for analysis was Queen Gorgo’s request of Sparta’s council to send their forces to the Battle of Thermopylae, from the movie 300. This speech was chosen simply for the fact that I have always enjoyed this movie and that I’ve always admired Queen Gorgo’s character. Although she does not immediately convince the council of sending Sparta’s army, her actions that follow do. Through the use of pathos, metaphors, and an urgent tone, Queen Gorgo is able to make a strong case to the council as to why they should aid King Leonidas at the Battle of Thermopylae.

Sometimes whats ideal in a situation is not what the truth of the situation and can cause your ideals to be lost. In William Golding’s novel, “Lord of the Flies”, he demonstrates a shift in some of the characters from the thought of idealism to the reality and truth of the world. Ralph is a good example of this shift, he starts out thinking the island will be a fun place and they’ll have fun waiting to be rescued, but soon he realizes that there is going to be more hardship and struggles to keep up the moral and hope of rescue. In the book Ralph wanted to keep everyone safe and get them off the island, but Jack wants to be a leader and messes up his plans, making it so that Ralph is alone in his plan to get rescued.
In this nostalgic and cynical novel we read about the painful transformation from youth to adulthood in a young boy called Holden. This troubled state of mind young boy, in his adolescent years, gives us an in-depth insight into the climax moment of his life which stretches over a period of three days. A very troubled and confused, depressed and insecure young man shows us that he is desperate for acceptance, regardless from where. He is constantly looking for some form of connection and for someone to acknowledge him. The approaching adulthood seems so phoney to him and he displays the mourning loss of the nurturing feeling of childhood, which seems light years away. Willa Cather has a great understanding of diction and thoroughly displays it in My Antonia. Anton Jelinek, a newly arrived immigrant from Bohemia, still calls Italians, “Eytalian … kawn-tree … we was showed in” (69) and mispronounces country and does not yet understand English grammar. He comments that, “I make my first communion very young,” (71). Jelinek’s informal dialogue fits his character because he is an immigrant and has just barely started to learn English. Therefore, his bad grammar, his accent, and mispronunciations make sense for who he is and where he came from, especially when taken into account where he is in his life. In contrast, Jim, who grew up in America and is native to the land, has a highly developed vocabulary and comments on how things are, “taciturn … [or] queer,” (72) and notes that Krajiek, “shrunk along behind them,” (75). He describes the, “bluish air, full of fine eddying snow, like long veils flying,” (76) and uses the words, “propitiatory intent” (77). Jim has a more formal language and is more educated that the immigrants of the towns. It is logical because it is written from the view of Jim as an adult looking back. As he looks back, he finds more complete words to describe situations that when he was actually in them. Jim’s vocabulary enlarged over time, so changes in how he describes his memories or reasonable.
Queen Elizabeth I is considered to be one of the most powerful women in history. In 1588, as ruler of England, she was faced with an invasion against Spain for control over trade in the new world. Her “Against the Spanish Armada” speech was addressed to the English Army at Tilbury Fort to help motivate and boost assurance, as well as showing support to her troops over the battle they were about to face. With her passionate words and courageous way, Queen Elizabeth establishes a connection with her soldiers; appealing to their patriotism and emotions through logos, pathos, and ethos. Although she was uncertain of a “famous victory”, Elizabeth instills the reassurance they need to fight against Spain and leading them to victory in the end.

They are in the midst of a war against Spain, and it is obvious that the Spanish armada will soon be approaching, and a battle will soon commence. The Queen’s purpose with her speech is to motivate her troops, to inspire patriotism for their country so they will fight more ferociously and with greater vigor than before in the war against Spain. She does this by adopting a regal, honorable, and reverent tone, asserting her authority while still giving the troops the respect they deserve in a way that shows her loyalty and appreciation for them. She wants her country to win in the war against Spain, which is why her speech must be powerful and elicit strong, immediate responses from her audience.

The looming threat of a nuclear war and the potential for a communist invasion kept many Americans in a constant state of panic. But Senator Joe McCarthy’s radical ideas about how to deal with communists spread like wildfire in the hearts and minds of many American groups, providing some temporary relief. Four months after McCarthy’s “Wheeling Speech,” which accused specific government workers of being communists, the first woman to serve in both houses of Congress and to represent Maine in either gave her own speech denouncing McCarthy’s ways. In her speech “Declaration of Conscience,” patriotic yet concerned Senator Margaret Chase Smith speaks about the lack of effective American government. Throughout her speech, she utilizes such rhetorical devices as repetition, parallelism, metaphor, historical and patriotic appeals, and use of quotation marks. Smith utilizes these devices in order to denounce government actions like McCarthyism, as well as to persuade Americans to vote for Republicans rather than Democrats. Smith shifts her tone from admonishing other U.S. Senators and Joe McCarthy to rallying American citizens, President Truman, and other Republicans to create a better America.
Florence Kelley was a United States social worker and reformer who fought successfully for child labor laws and improved conditions for working women. Throughout her speech to the Philadelphia Convention of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, she stresses the importance of changing the working conditions that are in place for children. By using child labor as her baseline, Kelley is able to talk about her main point, which is her suggestion for women’s rights with the help of repetition, strong word choice, and opposition.
Later in the speech Quindlen takes on an inspirational tone where she uses short sentences that shows how she’s enunciated specific information for instance “Look at your fingers. Hold them in front of your face. Each one is crowned by an abstract design that is completely different than those of anyone in this crowd, in this country, in this world. They are a metaphor for you”(Quindlen, 298). The pauses between the sentences make what she’s saying sound very dramatic. This tone continues as she talks about different ways you can break out the same old cycle of perfection. and she concludes her speech encouraging the audience to listen to that voice that tells you to do something different and outrageous,
Susan B. Anthony inspired to fight for women’s right while camping against alcohol..along with Elizabeth Cady Stanton also an activist, Anthony and Stanton founded the NWSA . Which helped the two women to go around and produced The Revolution, a weekly publication that lobbied for women’s rights.She also went on saying that if women ever wanted to get reaction men had…only thing stopping them,..having voting rights. An american social reformer and women’s right activist who played a pivotal role in the women’s suffrage movement, also a teacher who aggregate and compare about nature. She gave the “Women’s Rights to the Suffrage” giving outside the jail she was going to be held in, she gave this speech in person in 1873 and her audience were mostly white women that want virtues like men. Also men that wanted to put women in their place and friends of her and fellow citizens. Her main points are that women needed power that men had. Growing up in a quaker household she knew that women needed honor as men just like slaves experience getting their freedom. In Women’s right to suffrage Susan B. Anthony uses tone, reparation,and logos which dematices why women should have equal morality and voting abilities as men.
