On September 11, 2001, the United States of America was hit with the worst terrorist attack in history. An Islamic group called al-Qaeda hijacked four airliners. They flew two of them into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, one into the Pentagon in Washington D.C., and one into a field in Pennsylvania. When the Twin Towers fell, the footage was aired live on television and America was in shock. After an act of terrorism this tragic, the current President at the time, George W. Bush, had to address the nation. On this same day, President Bush gave a speech from the Oval Office in Washington D.C. The American people were afraid of more terrorist attacks. According to our textbook, fear followed by relief can prove very moving and motivational. President Bush must have understood the power in this technique because he used it throughout his speech. In the beginning, he used imagery of the terrible 9/11 tragedy to stir fear within Americans. He said, “The pictures of airplanes flying into buildings, fires burning, huge -- huge structures collapsing have filled us with disbelief, terrible sadness, and a quiet, unyielding anger.” Even when he said these words, you could tell that he himself was clearly distraught emotionally about the event. Later in the speech, he said “I have directed the full resources of our intelligence and law enforcement communities to find those responsible and to bring them to justice.” This is a perfect example of using the fear followed by relief technique. In addition to this, he made statements such as “Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.” Even today, this statement makes me feel proud to be an American and I wouldn’t think twice about going to war with any country trying to hurt
