Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of happiness; these three things are the backbone of The United States of America. In an extremely diverse country comprised of numerous races, social classes, political viewings, etc. We all strive for similar things. Those things are happiness, and success. In the “land of the free”, every law abiding citizen should be allowed equal opportunity. This is one element that makes America so marvelous. The truth however, is that this is not the case for every citizen. America is filled with racial opinions, prejudices, and discrimination, which conflicts with the goal of equal opportunity at life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. He first characterized his family in detail and thoroughly described their racial make up. His father is a black man from Kenya; and his mother is a white woman from Kansa. He was raised by a black grandfather who served in World War II, and a white grandmother who worked on a bomber assembly line. President Obama has also seen both ends of the spectrum as he was raised in one of the world’s poorest nations; but later went on to attend some of America’s most prestigious schools. He talked about his wife and how she is a black American woman with the blood of slaves as well as slave owners. This information about his life was a vital piece to include in his speech because it connected him with other African American’s. It gave credibility to his speech and made his message more valid. It showed America that him and his family have overcome many difficulties in life, similar to what many American’s are trying to, commonly referred to as “the American dream.” His own “American story” was very beneficial to include because it brought forth a great deal of emotion from voters, especially African American voters. He explained in detail many of the issues with race that he believes “this nation cannot afford to ignore right now. We would be making the same mistake that Reverend Wright made in his offending sermons about America: to simplify and stereotype and amplify the negative to the point that it distorts reality.” Many of the issues discussed were issues that have been a continual complication in America, such as segregated schools. He explained how segregated schools to this day, still are inferior schools. The inferiority of many segregated schools are responsible for countless obstacles for African American’s. Black children often receive a lesser education than white American children, which explains the common difference in achievement between black and white students. Likewise, legalized discrimination is one explanation for a substantial contrast in regards to white and black incomes. Oftentimes, blacks were rejected numerous opportunities to help their situation, such as “ the ability to own property, or approval of loans to African- American business owners, or black home owners who could not access FHA mortgages.” Although many of the racial problems in America involve African Americans, similar issues revolve around the white community. For example, many white American’s feel that they have not received any special treatment, and that black people have. Many times African
