'Revealed In The Short Story Ashes'

A conflict that happened in the book Rules of the Road is that a girl named Jenna who is the main character in this story faces a problem with her dad. Her parents are divorced so there is only her sister,her mom, and her. One day her dad comes into town all drunk and every time her dad comes back her family is always crazy. This time when her dad comes to see her at work she almost got fired and so she she tries and gets him to his apartment on a cab. Later when she gets home she tells her sister and mom. The next day Jenna gets an offer to drive her boss Mrs.Gladstone around town and says that she won't be back for 6 weeks. At first her mother refuses the offer and later she takes the offer realizing how much pressure it is to stay home

When Lori and Jeanette are growing older, they decide they want to move to New York City to start a new life, away from their parents. Lori and Jeanette get jobs and begin to earn money. They hide their earnings from their parents in a piggy bank they named Oz. One day Jeanette tries to find Oz to put her paycheck in. Instead she says to Lori “Someone has slashed him apart with a knife and stole all the money” (Walls 228). The kids knew right away who had stolen it. It was Dad. When Lori confronted Dad with the news about Oz, he started playing dumb, acting like he had not idea what was going on. But in fact he did steal the money. This action shows that Dad is very selfish and only cares about himself.

Being faced with a win/lose situation can be a complicated task to be faced with, as someone always gets hurt in the process. In the story ‘Ashes’, Ashleigh is faced with a very complicated situation between her parents, that if executed improperly, can really mess up the connection Ashleigh has with her parents. Her mom has a teapot that is full of emergency cash, and Ashleigh’s father needs a couple hundred dollars to complete a project that he is working on. Her father brought up the fact that she could steal the money and give it to him for his project, and then he would get back the money with his project. There is a part in the beginning of the story where Ashes, says“When I was little, Dad used to promise me the stars for a necklace, but like most of his promises, that one never quite happened.” This quote explains that he speaks more and is actionless. He has promised her things and accomplished nothing. If he had bought her a necklace with fake stars, it would make Ashes feel like her at least cared for her. He did not have to hype her up with hopes and then destroy them by not fulfilling it.

As seen in this quote, Ashes’ father is misdirecting her by sneakily telling her that she made a good decision to offer to help him steal the money. This evidence clearly represents how Ashes’ father is misleading her with lies and it will most likely reflect in their relationship negatively.

He brings Ashes to a diner and tells her how he has a possibility to make him on easy street. He informs her that it is more like he needs to pay $200 to some guys because he is debt, but he doesn’t have the money so he asks Ashes to steal from her mother. This is an example of how the father teaches something that he shouldn’t be and that it is okay to steal if you are in a dire need of the money. While this is the last point I believe that it really pulls the whole theme together.

“Ashes” by Susan Beth Peffer is about Ashley's love for her dad. Even though he's not the ideal dad, he's charming and kind but, at the same time he is also manipulative and irresponsible. .Ashleigh’s dad manipulates his daughters unconditional love for him rather than taking responsibility for his actions. Ashleigh wants to steal the money because she wants to help her dad. She doesn't want him to get into trouble,and she feels sorry for him.
