In order to respond to the contemporary issue of Hurricane Harvey, it is important that I am trained away from vainglory, avarice (greed), and sloth to respond in the way I believe is right. These vices can hinder my desired way of responding to this contemporary issue which is why I need to put them to death. I would need to be trained away from the vice of vainglory because I cannot be preoccupied with my own image or wanting people to acknowledge me for things I have not actually done. To put this vice to death, I must avoid thinking about what I will look like in the public eye if I succeed with the project I plan to do and do not seek the acknowledgment of people when I have not successfully completed my goals. I should not worry about
time of crisis by R. David Paulison, who unlike Brown, has had a career focused on disaster
The preparedness efforts leading up to Hurricane Floyd was not as affected as we are today due to lack of technology, we had back in 1999 and the infrastructure like we have today. The Division of Public Health held meetings a day before Hurricane Floyd arrived in North Carolina. They had press releases with some safety and tip advises to citizens all across the state of North Carolina and communicated with local health departments and exchanged valuable information on the assistance that was needed for the disaster. A hurricane warning was in effect for North Carolina 27 hours prior to the arrival of Hurricane Floyd. The weather channel predicted the hurricane from all the model predictions that it would not impact the east coast like it did. The governor at the time of Hurricane Floyd, who was Jim Hunt, reassured to the State of North Carolina that the storm is capable of producing heavy rain and also advised all of North Carolina to take shelter. Also, he advised the citizens that lived in manufactured homes, to evacuate immediately and take shelter elsewhere. As many as 700 National Guards were deployed in efforts for security and traffic. Local pet shelters were in place for home pets who needed shelter for the storm and proper instructions were listed just in case the citizens were taking care of their pets themselves. Other organizations such as American Red Cross were also in attendance during the preparedness efforts opening up shelters for citizens all across the
Natural disasters like hurricanes do not happen every day, but unfortunately, they do happen. A few weeks ago, Hurricane Harvey struck in Houston, Texas and caused serious havoc. Several scientists and weather meteorologists began to compare Hurricane Harvey to Hurricane Katrina, a hurricane 2005 that surrounded areas of Mississippi along with New Orleans. Harvey began in 2017 around the Houston area of Texas. Although, Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Harvey have a twelve-year time difference, they both have various similarities and differences.
As the Gulf States begin the massive task of reconstruction after Hurricane Katrina, the nation is actively engaged in a dialogue concerning the lessons learned from this catastrophe, and the best options moving forward. Many are asking whether the aid package and policies proposed by President Bush are the right approach to rebuilding and restoring the region. While the hurricane shines a much needed spotlight on a number of societal issues, it is crucial that programs initiated in the storm¡¦s aftermath have the desired effect¡Xnot just regionally, but on a national scale. The devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina has raised other, more general public policy issues about emergency
Natural disasters always bring many property damages, casualty and countless people who lost their home and all their belongings. "On May 22, 2011, the city of Joplin, Missouri was impacted by an EF-5 tornado. There were 158 deaths with over a thousand injured as a result of the tornado". Hurricane Katrina has been a good example as a warning on how the agencies as FEMA should have been handling the disasters. There were complaints from the survivors to the government, FEMA and other organizations that were involved in the rescue. Throughout the years, FEMA, the government, and some non-profit organizations have been working on the solution from the lesson of Hurricane Katrina and trying to minimize the casualty and property damages in the
While Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Katrina had different impacts on people lives. Katrina's devastations were a result of a failure of government flood protection systems, violent storm surges, a chaotic evacuation plan and an ill- prepared city government. Harvey, on the other hand, has caused massive flooding at a slower pace, unlike Katrina's deadly surge. People had suffered from traumatic event that will seek help finding different ways to cope with their trauma.
As We watch Hurricane Harvey and Irma ripping through our nation coastline causing billions of dollars of damages. As college students and Americans, I think it's our civic duty to help one another. A bunch of Illinois college student organization has come to together with ideas to help our fellow Americans that are affected by this natural disaster. We would appreciate if the professor would be involved with our service. So, our goal is to raise $250 by students donating their money and if that goal is meet professors who sign up who will have to get their face thrown by pies. It would greatly appreciate it if you could participate as many students adore and respect
On August 26th, 2017, Hurricane Harvey crashed into Texas and devastated Houston and the surrounding area. Harvey battered cities along the Gulf of Mexico, hitting primarily low income communities, and leaving 52 inches of rainfall, destroying about 22,000 homes, and displacing thousands in its wake. The image discussed in this essay depicts a Red Cross relief center in Houston providing shelter for residents unable to evacuate. The aforementioned image is of a domestic event, but the people, objects, and context demonstrate the complex social processes of globalization. Details in this image of Hurricane Harvey illustrate the harmful effect of the globalizing market in leading developed nations to be more focused on short term economic gain rather than long term environmental protection.
I believe people to be naturally good to others, because there is more kind-hearted people more than cold-hearted people in this world. In this world you will see a handful of people helping and giving to others no matter the situation. The percentage of evil and cruel people is a very low percentage. After everything people all over Texas is coming together, and it shows the good in people that we thought did not have a good heart.
At the onset of the most recent damage from Hurricane Harvey, I begin a discussion with a close friend about how I filled all these hurricanes happening around us. Most people believe that the recent hurricanes are results of climate change including the friend I had to discussion with. We delved into this conversation because I began explaining to him that I believed that America was being punished for its sins against Christ. He quickly dismissed me as a religious lunatic. Nevertheless, I pressed forward and explain to him my beliefs and how they provided me an example and how to live. There was a difficulty in meshing his scientific beliefs and my scientific beliefs. Scientific beliefs I have learned as a child that are reflection of how
August 25, 2017 Hurricane Harvey hit the coast of Texas with absolute power. It was originally predicted that it would not surpass category 1, the elements combined and made Harvey extremely vicious. It hit the most populated areas on the United States becoming one of the most destructive. People did not have enough time to properly prepare for the unpredicted devastation ahead. However, the government and the people responded with strong efforts. Let’s start with the federal department. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (which is referred to as FEMA), with its government accomplices mobilized a work force and with many assets to help states affected. About 21,000 government assets were sent to help out during the vicious Tropical Storm. A lot of people sought refuge during the storm and the Federal government gave them many places to stay for example many government owned sites were converted refuge sites for the victims. The U.S coast guard played a huge role to aid victims. Thousands of coast guards were deployed in support of the relief efforts. They evacuated victims through government transport such as helicopters and big vehicles that could travel through the flooding. They are also opened various docks and waterways within Brownsville, Kentucky without any restrictions to the public. FEMA provided thousands of meals, medical and household items. Fema also paid rent for the victim’s short-term housing. Other ongoing Federal
On August 25, 2017 around 11 P.M., businesses, houses, cars and trees were swallowed by flood waters. Debris started building up and copious amounts of water started to over flow the drainages causing dams, levees and bayous to exceed anything beyond their conceptual holdings. Areas that have never come close to flooding found themselves suddenly become "lakefront properties." The storm churned out water, lightning, and wind and went back over the gulf to start the cycle again. The destruction that Hurricane Harvey caused to my beautiful hometown Houston, Texas including a large portion of south Texas, wester Louisiana and other parts of the country has been extremely surreal. Watching the destruction of this beautiful city that I love dearly,
In my opinion, all three levels of government failed the people of New Orleans in responding to Hurricane Katrina. There was plenty of pushing the blame on one another that ended up delaying responses and finding results. It seemed like one level of government would try saying the other level of government is responsible for that role. For example, The Director of FEMA, Michael Brown would say that the local and state are in charge of evacuation planning. There is some truth to that, but according to the U.S federal law governing homeland security it states that FEMA, “operations to save lives, through evacuating potential victims.” (Producers, 2005).
The recovery is major since the severity of the storm has caused damage, so preparing for the long-term repair of homes, property, and businesses will ensure the state hit by disaster can return to their normal function. The cleanup effort is essential during the recovery from a disaster whether it be man-made or natural.
Rescues from boats and helicopters flood the news stations and social media as thousands of families are in shock from the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey. Neighbors become heroes as they assist those in need, helping before help arrives. Volunteers wading through flooded streets, pulling boats, risking their lives, as they carry the elderly and helpless. Victims search for loved ones and furry friends throughout the widespread damage that will involve years of recovery.
