Strict parents, ugh it can be the worst. Doesn’t it feel like you're limited what you can do and what kind of feelings you have? Thats exactly how it feels to me. Like I can't do anything exciting in my social life, just like in this book I read called “Harrison Bergeron” it's by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. In this particular short story, it talks about how people are clueless, how they have to wear handicaps, and how they're forced to be equal. This story relates to my family in some ways. I hate it when people act clueless, or just don't take notice of anything. If you’re a mother you should take the time to talk to your kids and find out things about them. Thats one thing I can't stand, when a mother absent in their child's life. Kind of like in …show more content…
That was the whole reason why the very athletic, handsome/ pretty people had to wear handicaps and mask. So that no one would feel the need to doubt themselves, everyone would be good at pretty much the same thing. If one person wasn't good at something, or couldn't do something, they didn't want anyone else to do it either. For example, in “Harrison Bergeron” they didn't have much sports because there were some people in particular that were great at sports and some were not, and they did not like competition. So therefore they just didn't have sports. But they did have Ballet. Some of the ballet dancers had to wear handicaps though, because they could jump higher than the rest. And they also had to wear hideous masks because they were so beautiful they didn't want anyone in the audience to feel like they were ugly. This relates to my family so well, its so funny. My brothers get mad whenever I ask for the car, they’re like “If i can’t go nowhere, you cant either.” Then they’ll try to talk my mom out of letting me go places. Gosh my family is really harsh. It also relates back to the sports thing. My brothers and father don't want anyone to be different in the family. They want everyone to play the same sports, do the same things, and get money together. Just stay together forever basically. I wouldn't think their social life was to exciting. All the handicaps, Equality, and cluelessness. Most families deal with it, its’s probably not as deep though. I can deal with my family troubles. No matter weather a family is real or fictional they all have their differences, and how they get through that is how they
Have you ever read a story but liked the movie about it better? Well that was the case for me when I read "Harrison Bergeron." In the story many scenes were unclear and confused me but the movie made it more understandable. There was also many differences between the story and movie which got confusing. But the changes from the story made the movie more clear and exciting. Although the story was good I liked the movie better because it was more clear.
In society, it is perceived as peculiar to act different than everyone else; to go against the norm is against the rules, in a way. In “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut, George and Hazel Bergeron’s son gets the ultimate punishment for wanting to be different. Breaking the chains of his “handicaps” such as weights hung around his neck and glasses with thick distorted lenses, Harrison Bergeron tried to persuade a small group at a television station to remove their handicaps as well. He had just escaped from prison and called himself the Emperor. For breaking the many laws of equality established before the current year 2081, Harrison was shot and killed instantly, right in front of his parents who were watching
Imagine having a handicap everywhere you go and having a friend who doesn’t have a handicap, because they’re less skilled. Does this make it seem equal? Well, it seem like the story “Harrison Bergeron” will answer that, depending on what you think is equal. In this case, I find that everyone was not truly equal in “Harrison Bergeron.”
In”Harrison Bergeron” written by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., the family shares similarities and deferences with my family concerning point of view, standing up for what you believe is right, and how it fits into families today. The “Harrison Bergeron” has similarities to my family such as Points of view because in my family everyone has a different option on things. Another thing is standing up for what you believe in, in the story it shows a lot of how concrete Harrison belief is that the handicaps are bad and how he is willing to challenge the whole government over it. There are many families but all of them will have the differences good and bad.
In the short story “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut the author portrays a society where people are controlled by a sole governing source that handicaps it’s people so that no one is better than anyone and everyone is equal. “The year was 2081, and everybody was finally equal... They were equal every which way. Nobody was smarter than anybody else” (299). When George, the main character sees his son get shot on live television, his reaction is less than expected.
Harrison Bergeron is an Icarus tale written by Kurt Vonnegut about a society where everyone is forced to be equal. This story takes place in 2081 where people have handicaps to create an environment where everyone has the same physical and mental capabilities. Harrison Bergeron is the main character who tries to overcome his oppressive society and be free. Harrison achieves his freedom, but it is short lived and he perishes soon after. This is almost identical to Ovid’s Icarus, where Icarus flies towards the sun to be free, but dies soon after. In the story Harrison Bergeron, Vonnegut is warning the read not to dwell on insecurities because they trap people in negativity, cause people to lose sight of surroundings, and weigh people down.
"Government need supervision, just like a ten ages do, if you give them too much freedom they will get out of control and will walk over you!" - Zybejta Beta Metani'Marashi. The short story, "Harrison Bergeron" By Kurt Vonnegut is about the government in America finally making people equal in every which way -anyone who is above average in anything gets handicapped in some way-. The short story, "Test" by Theodore Thomas explains how higher authorities use their power to decide the fates of people by checking their reaction on a test individual’s take. The theme of both of these stories is to never give the government too much power, otherwise, the people will face a lot of trouble.
Primarily, everyone in the story that are naturally born with above average abilities have to cover it up with things called handicaps.
It takes courage to stand up for one’s beliefs, and not everyone is bold enough to take the chance. Freedom, taking risks, and just living in the moment is displayed in the short story of Harrison Bergeron , when Harrison tries to break free from under the government's laws in the future. In society, everyone is different, and has their own hopes and dreams in their lives that are aimed to be pursued like in Harrison Bergeron. The theme “Total equality isn’t an ideal worth striving for, but a mistaken goal that is dangerous in both execution and outcome” is the statement the other is trying to communicate. Kurt Vonnegut, in Harrison Bergeron, helps develop the theme through satire and characterization.
The story “Harrison Bergeron” written by Kurt VOnnegut Jr. explores the idea of a perfect society. A life where you are completely oppressed to be like everyone else. A young boy known as Harrison Bergeron seeks to have change in society and for everyone to be free.
Imagine a world where an oppressive government captures what many call diversity. Where ugly is known as beauty and intelligence is insignificant. “They weren't only equal before God and the law. They were equal every which way. Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anybody else.” (Vonnegut) This is the future that Harrison experiences, in the short story “Harrison Bergeron,” by Kurt Vonnegut. It is the year 2081 and the government handicaps every citizen with make up or weights to create equality. Where there are over than 200 amendments and the government has full control of all citizens, this is indeed against what America had been
Everyone has things that they feel isn’t right and should be different, and most people try to change what they think is wrong. Kurt Vonnegut and Carole Boston Weatherford use this universal human feeling in their short stories. In “Harrison Bergeron” he doesn’t like that people are limited because of handicaps and can’t reach their full potential. In “Freedom on the Menu The Greensboro Sit-ins” the characters wants to be able to have the same rights as the whites and starts “sit-ins” to protest. In both “ Harrison Bergeron” and “Freedom on the Menu The Greensboro Sit-ins,” we learn that in life they’re things that you don’t agree with and you have to stand up against, regardless of the outcome either good or bad.
In the story Harrison Bergeron in the year 2081 everyone is equal, no one is smatter, better looking, stronger, faster, etc. than anyone else, but rather everyone is “average”. This story raises the idea of tall poppy syndrome. A derogatory term used to describe a social phenomenon in which people are resented, attacked, put down, and criticized by society because their talents or achievements place them above and distinguish them from their peers. This is evident in the characters Harrison Bergeron, George Bergeron, and the ballerina whose talents are being hindered by the government (handicapper general) in the story. Harrison Bergeron is and absurdly handsome, strong, genius who outpaces his peers.
The government handicaps George’s mental abilities since they are above average, while Hazel’s mental abilities are average.
In Harrison Bergeron, Kurt Vonnegut Jr. writes a utopian society where everyone is equal , the year is 2081. The two dancers jumped up to the ceiling. Just then a double barrel ten-gauge goes off and the dancers are dead before they hit the floor. Harrison Bergeron has bravery, a free spirit, and is rebellious. People face strong consequences when they go against what the government says. That is just what Harrison Bergeron did, and he faced the consequences. This is so called equality, this is far from equality. If the government enacted this law then the country would be heading to rock bottom.
