Write a 1 page response on how you feel about Act 1 of Importance of Being Ernest. The act started with the conversation of Algy and Lane. It shows how Algy is towards a servant and he portrayed a sarcastic person definitely. He questions and he expects replies that pleases him from Lane. He represents the upper social class of this era distinctly by disregarding Lane’s social life as she’s a servant and has no sense of moral responsibility. I thought this attitude of his would stop when he meets other upper class people like Mr. Ernest Worthing; however, his wits never die. I personally think that Algy is sly like a fox. As in, just because he disagree on romantic proposals, he sarcastically justify why one should not be married. Therefore,
Algernon is demonstrated as a comical character. He is also shown to be a liar and this is seen when he tells Lady Bracknell that there were “no cucumbers in the market” to make the cucumber sandwiches; when he ate them all. He is also very open with women and engages is physical contact before permission from Cecily’s guardian, Jack. Algernon also meets Cecily in a wrong manner as he runs off to Jack’s country house uninvited; which isn’t reflective of an Ideal Victorian man at all.
For anyone who doesn’t know me, I’m Algernon, actually never mind that, as I do believe that everyone here today knows me, as Bunbury kept to himself a lot and didn’t really have anyone else. So this honor is bestowed unto me to say a few words in memory and to enlighten all of you on what kind of man my dear friend Bunbury was. (lady Bracknell:) “Hurry up Algernon I have luncheon at 3 and it would be a most terrible thing to miss it” (Algernon:) Yes, rather.
The relationship between Algernon and Cecily undergoes an irony too. At the first meeting between them Algernon begs her not to think him wicked, and she replies:
The author gives a detailed account of Alys appearance due to it portraying her personality too. Alys appearance was portrayed as wordly. She was seen as the woman who had gapped teeth, wears excess amounts of jewelry, and wore dark colored lip stain. The author expresses “Gat-tothed I was, and that bicam me weel;” Implying that Alys was proud of being gapped toothed. The excess amount of jewelry was a mark of boastfulness, and finally her dark lip color draws attention to her. Her looks mirror her immoral character. An online character analysis points out that “Descriptions of her facial and bodily features are sexually suggestive.” These features are not only sexual suggestive of her body but also her personality. She was a boastful woman.
l. What is the purpose of paragraph 15 besides concluding the essay? How would you describe the speakers tone in this paragraph? Does it differ from the tone she uses in other parts of the essay?
In the beginning of the novel, Alyss is characterized as adventurous, determined, and a leader. The narrator concedes that when Alyss and Dodge ran through the servants tunnels, Alyss was laughing and enjoying herself… and for the first time in her life, Alyss stepped outside the palace grounds (Beddor 32). Alyss does not think that going out of the palace grounds is bad, instead she thinks it is more fun and adventurous. In her mind nothing bad can ever happen and she is always safe in her happy, small world. When Alyss says, “No I am staying!” to her mother right before Red kills her, the reader can see Alyss’ determination to stay with her mother before mad hatter pulls her into the looking glass (Beddor 46). Alyss is determined to stay,
This also shows the reader that Alyss is very creative. Alyss had got lectured by bibwit for laughing at his state so she acted out with her creative imagination by putting gwormmies in the cake and he “felt something squirming in his mouth” causing more chaos to her birthday party and founders day parade. Although Alyss may act troublesome and use her creative imagination to have “fun”, she does have a charming side to her, her father even said that he thought she was a “delightful creature” (Beddor 19). On Alyss’ seventh birthday Dodge gave her a cheap fake jabberwocki tooth necklace and she actually loved it just because it was from him and when Jack of Diamonds offered much more such as Diamonds and expensive gifts she declined because Jack was not the one who she loved.
Algernon Moncreiff on the other hand, lied to get to the coutnry so he could find something more genuine as opposed to the false honesty of the city. Again, one sees the same dichotomy as one would see in Jack. Alge lied to get to Cecily, his true love, which again is genuine. Cecily Cardew has a dichotomous personality as well. On the outside, Cecily appears to be innotcent and very victorian like, which represents the victorian dewfinitionof honesty. However, if one dug a little deeper, they would see that Cecily is much like a female version of a dandy. She has wicked thoughts, which represent her genuine, truly honest self.
Algernon Moncrieff is one of the main characters in oscar Wilde’s play “ The Importance of Being Earnest” and he was also a main character in the movie as well. In the movie Algernon is portrayed as a tall, mid thirties, caucasian male who is not entirely wealthy but also no where near poor. Algernon’s accent in the movie is something that was unexpected for me because when reading the book I read his voice as a normal American voice but because he has an accent in the movie it makes his character seem more proper and important. The facial expressions that Algernon has throughout the movie make his character appear more young/ childish, at times they make it seem that he isn’t taking what is being said towards him seriously. In the movie the
They are presented to within a high class of society, with a lack of consideration or care for the lower classes. Both are bored by their high society lives and “stiff” lunches/meetings that they must attend, so have created alter egos which they use to have fun in a different place. Algernon has invented a sick friend called Bunbury, who he sometimes must spend long lengths of time “looking after”, and when in the country, Jack becomes Ernest.
Satire is especially used to criticize people’s morals and outlooks on life. Algernon is very fashionable man, and is always overly dressed. This can be humorous but it also ridicules that type of picky lifestyle because young Englishmen of the time also worried too much about their clothes. As Lady Bracknell points out, Algernon “is nothing but he looks every thing”. According to Jack, Algernon is very prideful which is made clear from Algernon’s claim to being “immensely over-educated”. His view that relatives are “a tedious pack of
On July 10th of 2015 I attended a play entitled The Importance of Being Earnest, written by Oscar Wilde, at the University of Central Florida’s Main stage theatre. The show was a comedy set in the Victorian period of England. The play questions whether one’s appearance and society’s opinion were more important than the substance of character. As long as you did everything the proper way and kept your manners intact no one cared what you did behind closed doors. This can be heard multiple times throughout the show as snide remarks are made about people within high society who do not follow the “rules.”
The approach used and why. Task based learning. Trough task based learning the students’ use the “task” to carry out meaningful learning in the target language (Brown 2007, p. 50).
My Reckoning Essay focuses on whether the theory of evolution can be explained through a scientific and religious perspective. The essay focuses on two major questions: how is scientific literacy at risk of extinction and what would happen if responsible science and religion were placed together? In response to these questions, scientific literacy is a prominent problem in society, since people are bombarded with different information and they need to discern credible sources. Once humans gain a new understanding from religion and science and implement it to the theory of evolution, they are able to expand beyond their intellect. Main Points of Revision:
Alvy does not conform to the norms of expectation as he is not what one would generally refer to as captivating compared to the majority of the audience eye. He is everything but the male usually portrayed in most other romantic comedies as he is not muscular, good looking or popular. Alvy’s outlook on dating has been marred by previous bad relationships.
