The question posed to the reader of The Odyssey is “Do you think Odysseus was justified in his actions of revenge against the wooers who has taken over his home. “ The thesis will focus on the response of Odysseus being justified in his actions against the suitors. The reader will explain the reasoning with examples from the novel.
The setting of The Odyssey was ten years following the Trojan War where Odysseus was being held captive. In this time, wooers, who longed for the title of King of Ithaca and all of its possessions and power, has overrun Odysseus’ home and pursues his wife. There is a plot by one of the wooers to assassinate Telemachus, son of Odysseus and heir to the throne. In the time of the wooers plot, Odysseus is still alive. Upon his return, he disguises himself as a beggar and mingles amongst the wooers planning his own revenge. The wooers disrespected his home and his family. Odysseus, being the king and soldier that he is obligated to retaliate in the way he did. The wooers were in a frame of mind that no other method of reason would work. Odysseus is such an honorable man, that even in his outrage of what the wooers has done, he does not immediately act with violence. He approached the wooers with dignity by suggesting a way out for them. Odysseus says, “Cease but in the morning let heaven give victory to whom it will.” It is not until it is clear that there is no love and respect for Odysseus that he strikes. Odysseus realized at this point there was no other way of regaining
Who we are depends on how we react to major events in our lives. Our character traits build off of these experiences, too. In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus shows many traits while he travels on this adventure. Some of these include cleverness, leadership, and self-restraint.
I think that Odysseus' actions were justified because of the actions of the wooers. Without any conformation of him being dead, they first tried to woo his wife. That is very disrespectful and angered Odysseus greatly. Also, the suitors show no respect for his house and belongings. They overtake his house without even thinking about the man of the house, which is disrespectful.
When Odysseus returned he enters his kingdom disguised as a beggar. This allows him to witness first-hand how the wooers are acting. He is disgusted by the wooers
Telemachus is the son of Odysseus and Penelope. He was born just before Odysseus went to war. As he was becoming a young man he went on a search by ship to find his father and prove that he was still alive. The Grey-eyed goddess Athene came to Telemachus during his travels and said “The noblest of the wooers lie in wait for thee of purpose, in the strait between Ithaca and rugged Samos, eager to slay thee before thou come to thine own country.” Odysseus was justified in his killing of the wooers because they were plotting to kill the son who he had not seen for so many years.
The love that is shared between a husband and wife is sacred. Their bond should be as close as peanut butter and jelly on a sandwich. Their love will be tested, and there will also be trials and tribulations. Most important, their loyalty should be to each other. In Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, Odysseus is faced with more temptation than any man should. In Book Five, Odysseus’ conversation with the nymph Kalypso, she questions his desire to go home to Penelope. Odysseus’ speech appeals Kalypso’s values and the reader’s emotions.
He competed in a bow and arrow challenge to win over his own wife, Penelope. Odysseus revealed his identity to his son, Telemachus, and some of his servants to then slaughter Penelope’s wooers that tried to win her over when he was away. He had the aid of Zeus’ daughter, Athene to help guide him.
When Odysseus finally returns he sees what the wooers are doing and murders them all including the maidservants. Odysseus' actions are justified in punishing the wooers beacause they disrespected his home, they stole his belongings and they tried to marry his wife. The wooers disrepected his home by overstaying their welcome. Odysseus was gone for twenty years.
He wants to kill them on the spot for their disgrace, but the goddess Athena advises him to be patient, and that the suitors will be punished (930). Odysseus obeys and waits patiently, until the goddess gives him the chance to extract his revenge upon all the suitors, finally bringing justice to his house. By listening to the goddess, he is rewarded with the taking back of his home and is reunited with his wife. As you can see from these examples, when Odysseus obeyed and respected the gods in this epic, they rewarded him and helped him to complete his long journey
Odysseus is the main character in an epic poem called the Odyssey. In the poem Odysseus has had some bad luck getting home, with some of the gods helping him and some hindering him; his journey towards home is a constant struggle. In this poem we see a man being broke and rebuilt, through constant irony his faith was damaged and without the help of Athena he probably would have given up on his journey. Through his hard work and wise spirit he finally does achieve his goal.
Again, the gods’ warned of revenge if Odysseus’ men did not obey them in not eating the cattle. Yet, while Odysseus was sleeping, Eurylochus convinced Odysseus’ men to eat the cattle (Homer 408). When the Sun god Helios found that Odysseus’ men had slaughtered his cattle, he rallied to the gods to strike revenge on them. Helios sought out revenge by asking Zeus, “’Father Zeus! The rest of you blissful gods who never die-punish them all, that crew of Laertes’ son Odysseus…’”(Homer 409). Zeus responded with vengeance by striking Odysseus’ boat with a lightening bolt and killing his men (Homer 410). By Zeus striking Odysseus’ boat with a lightening bolt and killing his men, the reader is definitely aware of the severity of revenge associated with disobeying a god; especially the most powerful of all gods. This severity greatly shows the important role that revenge plays in the poem and the affect revenge has on Odysseus.
During his journeys Odysseus often makes the mistake of bragging to his enemies but learns that doing this gives his enemies a chance to seek revenge against him. After leaving Troy, Odysseus attacks the
Good afternoon Madam chairperson and my fellow students. The topic for our debate is “That Australia Should Reintroduce or Legalise the Death Penalty.” We the negative team, do not believe we should reintroduce the death penalty.
Odysseus had many reason to make revenge on all the wooers who had tried to steal his thrown from him. Not only did they try to steal his throw, but also they disrespected his wife and son on multiple occasions. Although, that did not make any of his actions justified. In a few instances the punishment was too severe, and they did not deserve it.
Vladimir, Estragon, Lucky, and Pozzo from Waiting For Godot could be considered four separate beings whom are responsible for their own selves and are completely alone in their decision-making. Despite them being separate beings, they have multiple interactions in which they reveal they are connected in some way. Between the two sets of characters, they are connected physically and/or mentally. Each character represents a half of a whole, Vladimir and Lucky being the mind and Estragon and Pozzo being the body. Without each other they cannot exist.
