The question posed to the reader of The Odyssey is “Do you think Odysseus was justified in his actions of revenge against the wooers who has taken over his home. “ The thesis will focus on the response of Odysseus being justified in his actions against the suitors. The reader will explain the reasoning with examples from the novel.

The setting of The Odyssey was ten years following the Trojan War where Odysseus was being held captive. In this time, wooers, who longed for the title of King of Ithaca and all of its possessions and power, has overrun Odysseus’ home and pursues his wife. There is a plot by one of the wooers to assassinate Telemachus, son of Odysseus and heir to the throne. In the time of the wooers plot, Odysseus is still alive. Upon his return, he disguises himself as a beggar and mingles amongst the wooers planning his own revenge. It is not until his identify is revealed to his son and a few others that he makes his attack in efforts of regaining his honor and respect, as well as his family and home. …show more content…

The wooers disrespected his home and his family. Odysseus, being the king and soldier that he is obligated to retaliate in the way he did. The wooers were in a frame of mind that no other method of reason would work. Odysseus is such an honorable man, that even in his outrage of what the wooers has done, he does not immediately act with violence. He approached the wooers with dignity by suggesting a way out for them. Odysseus says, “Cease but in the morning let heaven give victory to whom it will.” It is not until it is clear that there is no love and respect for Odysseus that he strikes.
