3.2. The problem and our solution
According to the survey results of National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, as pointed out by Steege, Boiano and Sweeney , around twelve thousand twenty-eight respondents included professional, technical and support occupations which routinely come in contact with the targeted hazardous chemicals. Chemical-specific safe handling training was lowest for aerosolized antibiotics (52%), and surgical smoke (57%). Reported employer procedures for minimizing exposure were lowest for surgical smoke (32%) and anesthetic gases (56%).
The results indicate that the level of safety measures were low. These results can improve when workers have learned about the safety and occupational health. An organization to train people can be made to improve the level on health and safety.

The safety concerns can be resolved through companywide mandatory safety training. Safety training can be done in various ways such as regular session with supervisors, managers, and employees are often coordinated by HR
Also employers should provide up to date courses on health and safety to ensure that staff know how to keep themselves and others safe in the workplace and any outside visitors or customers that come in and to be able to co-operate with their employers. health and safety procedures and practises should be under continual scrutiny and areas for improvement should be monitored and dealt with. A good method of monitoring & improving are health, safety and security procedures are visually. Check visitors have signed in the visitor’s book, look for items blocking fire exits or hallways, wet signs are in place during cleaning, COSHH cupboards are kept locked, medication trolleys are secure, hoists are clean and stored in a correct storage place. Policies and procedures need to be reviewed regularly to ensure they are still relevant, circumstances in workplace can change and new risk assessments will need to be put in place or old ones reviewed. Policies and procedures may need evaluating and developing

Currently the process safety management of highly hazardous chemicals is a broad standard that covers many industries possessing chemicals above a threshold quantity. The standard does not distinguish between different industries or different chemicals. It may be advisable to adapt the standard to differentiate between industries and chemicals. This would make the standard more specific and could focus on industry specific hazard prevention, best management practices, recognized and generally accepted good engineering practices, and emergency

I have recently been hired as a safety manager for a chemical manufacturing company. Dosit Corporation not only sells the over 780 chemicals that they manufacture to other manufactures; they also sell them to be used in household cleaning products. Dosit employs a total of 290 employees. I am the first safety manager to be hired within this corporation. I have received all files for the existing safety policies and records. After I have completely reviewed all of the provided documentation for the existing safety policies and records I will have a better understanding of the steps I will need to take to develop and implement a working safety plan, have all SDS’s and labels up to date and in accordance with all laws and regulations,
Chemical professionals are expected to serve the public and do so safely in order to strive for true advancements in chemical science. Chemical professionals also have the responsibility to maintain integrity and honesty in respect for the chemical profession itself. Misuse and neglect of this responsibility diminishes the core foundation to which all of these guidelines lie upon. There is also the responsibility of a chemical scientist to their employer and fellow employees to work honestly and safely within the Chemical Professional Code of Conduct guidelines. The most profound responsibility of a chemist is to treat others with respect and encourage others’ scientific contributions and ideas, to learn and coexist with others as well as to avoid bias of any kind toward another. This seems to be the basis that all other responsibilities branch from for the improvement of a chemical scientist as an individual, along with their work and benefactions to the chemical
Just recently, All Weather Windows Commercial Ltd., has purchased a smaller company with a large glass manufacturing facility. This smaller company has approximately 150 employees that now work under our organization. Throughout this assignment, I will focus on basic safety initiatives to implement into the new facility. The reason I chose to focus on implementing basic safety initiatives, is based on the fact, this new facility is populated with many plant workers and has to now adopt my organization safety program.
Occupational health and safety (OHS) in the workplace requires an effective systematic approach with strategies to control and monitor OHS risks and which is consistent with relevant OHS legislative requirements.
Despite undeniable efforts investing in safety and health within the workplace, occupational accidents continue to account for injuries and deaths every year (Cadieux et al, 2006). In Quebec alone in the year of 2004, 176 deaths and 128,104 occupational injuries were registered by the National OHS board (Cadieux et al, 2006). In order to improve these rates worldwide, Occupational Health and Safety Management systems are developed and implemented in the workplace.
