What you eat can say a great deal about the person that you are and your impact on society. I follow a vegan lifestyle. According to The Vegan Society, veganism is “a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude . . . all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.” Embarking on this way of life demonstrates that I am a humane and compassionate person.
By choosing not to consume meat, I am not contributing to the endless suffering that animals encounter in slaughterhouses, but rather partaking in a more peaceful and considerate way of life. Animals in slaughterhouses have a vastly shorter lifespan than the animals that live elsewhere, and they are subjected to inhumane practices. But, I have been taught to care about animals because they have feelings and emotions just like us. So I don’t mind the challenges that come with being vegan. We do not have the right to raise one animal on a higher pedestal than another based solely on the way we were conditioned. A dog is no different from a pig or a cow in terms of their emotions and behavior. Being a vegan also says that I am steadfast in my beliefs and that I have an empathetic soul. I am able to discern right from wrong and follow my heart in regards to veganism, as well as other aspects of my life. I care so deeply about other living beings and share a special bond with anyone going through formidable times because I always want to help those in need.
