Tourette Syndrome is a common neurological disorder that affects many Americans every year. It is characterized by sudden motor tics that can be involuntary and repetitive. These involuntary motor tics can have degrees of intensity ranging from simple to complex. Brief and repetitive movements such as, eye blinking, facial grimacing, other eye movements characterize simple motor tics. Simple motor tics usually involve a limited number of muscle groups and can include simple vocalizations such as, repetitive sniffing, throat clearing, or grunting sounds. Unlike simple motor tics, complex motor tics are distinct and coordinated patterns of movement. Facial grimacing, sniffing or touching objects, hopping, jumping, bending, or twisting, characterizes

Tourette syndrome is a disorder that is found in the nervous system and is most commonly found in children. Forms of Tourette’s can range from being severe to being mild, causing people to have motor or vocal tics. “Other symptoms such as the expression of socially inappropriate comments or behaviors, obsessive compulsive disorder, attention deficit disorder, self-injuring behavior, depression, and anxiety also appear to be associated with Tourette syndrome” (Tourette syndrome, 1). Tourette’s mainly affects children and teens. It occurs less as you get older. During the late teen years, the severity of Tourette’s decreases. “Some of the suggested risk factors include severe psychological trauma, recurrent daily stresses, extreme emotional excitement, PANDAS (pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorder with streptococcal infection), and drug abuse” (Tourette syndrome, 1). Tourette’s can effect someone negatively, due to some of the actions that can occur. People misunderstand people with Tourette’s,
Tourette's Syndrome Gilles de la Tourette’s Syndrome (TS) is a sporadic or inherited complex neuropsychiatric disorder (not an illness) influenced by neurological, psychological, and sociological factors. It is characterized by involuntary tics - sudden, rapid, recurrent nonrhythmic movements or noises that occur repeatedly in the same way (Temple, 2003). The symptoms include: both multiple motor tics and one or more phonic tics (which may or may not include vocalizations and which sometimes include outbursts of swearing) present at some time during the disorder although not necessarily simultaneously; tics occur many times a day (usually in bouts) nearly every day or
The main symptoms of Tourette syndrome are tics, involuntary muscle movements (Bjorklund 12). Although unpredictable, tics are more likely to happen when people are sick or anxious (20). The two types of tics, physical and vocal, can range from mild to severe (12). Mild vocal tics include: spitting, sneezing, throat clearing, coughing, sniffing, and grunting. There are mild physical tics also such as sticking out the tongue (21), shoulder shrugging, eye blinking, and head twitching (20). Tourette syndrome is most often inherited genetically. Tourette’s is a result of a genetic mutation in the brain’s basal ganglia or from a gene mutation in the cerebral cortex of the brain. Scientists also believe this disease can be a result of environmental factors (12). People can get Tourette syndrome from a brain injury or bacterial infections (38).
Totem poles are made by Indians from the Pacific Northwest Coast, and often tell stories of a family´s ancestral spirits. Totem poles can often depict mythical beasts, wildlife, and spirits. The panda, tiger, horse, frog, and owl describe my family and I. The traits they possess are, willpower, strong emotions, wisdom, renewal, and strong intuition. Everyone has a different and special animal that is unique.
Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neuropsychiatric disorder involving motor and vocal tics. Typical onset occurs around 5-7 years and it is associated with comorbid conditions such as OCD or ADHD. There is evidence that TS is an inherited disorder as shown in familial and twin studies, but the exact genetic pathology or etiology is still unknown. The neurobiology of TS appears to be involved in cortico-striatal-thalamo cortical (CSTC) circuits, which connect parts of the frontal cortex to subcortical structures. Tics are caused by focal excitatory abnormalities in the striatum that lead to inhibition
We are comfortable breaking the law when we feel it does not apply to us, that laws such as the speed limit are not real laws because everyone breaks them. In 399 BC, Socrates would have disagreed with this assertion, and died in part to keep this idea from spreading. Socrates was sentenced to death by an Athenian court, though the punishment did not fit the crimes he was accused of. We assume that any knowingly innocent person would have escaped this sentence if given the opportunity and support to do so, yet Socrates refused to and died soon after. Over 2,000 years later, Martin Luther King, Jr. is also imprisoned for a petty crime and saw his actions in line with Socrates, as they were both unjustly jailed for questioning their
Tourette’s syndrome is a disorder that makes its host produce unwanted movement and/or sound. The condition may contain one or both symptoms. Tourette's disorder is an issue with the sensory system that causes individuals to make sudden developments or sounds, called tics, that is beyond the hosts control. The disorder is named for the pioneer in French neurosurgery, Dr. Georges Gilles de la Tourette, when he discovered it in a French citizen in 1885. The symptoms for Tourette's syndrome are first seen in early childhood between the ages of 3 and 9 years of age. The disorder is not limited to one ethnic group. Men are 3 to 4 times
Ben’s case history suggested three behavioral strategies that he could do to improve is symptoms and thus his daily life. The first is being able to live a healthy lifestyle through dieting and exercising. Ben even talked about how on days when he is lazy and eats junk food, he realizes that his tics happen more frequently. He stated that exercising relieves the stress of his symptoms. The second strategy is reducing stress. Ben talked about how when he became nervous in situations, his tics would become more pronounced and recurrent. He would have less control over them. However, if he took deep breaths to try and calm himself, he could control his symptoms better. The third behavioral strategy is maintaining quality social skills with those around him. There is a social stigma with people who have psychological disorders and it is even harder for Ben because he wears his symptoms on his sleeve. He cannot hide from his disorder because he suffers from both physical and verbal tics. People can easily see and hear Ben’s symptoms. Ben states that he likes to explain to his friends what exactly Tourette syndrome is. He wants to people to better understand the symptoms and what people with this disorder go through. He also fully understands why some people may not grasp what is going on when he has a fit of tics. He talks about people in movie theaters or
Dr. say there are many types of Tourette's, in motor Tourette's there are uncontrollable movements like eye blinking, shoulder shrugging, head jerking, and many other body movements. Vocal tics would be one like humming, whistling, throat clearing, or sniffing. This sort of disability lasts up to 6 to 7 years. A lot of the first symptoms start in the facial area and later on move to tics in the arms or legs, and males are 3 to 4 times likely to have Tourette's than
Autism Spectrum Disorders are developmental disabilities with lifelong effects for the person. They are characterized by the repetitive behaviors exhibited by the client with social and communication deficits as well. Clients with ASDs have unusual abilities to learn, they struggle with paying attention and may react inappropriately with extreme tantrums to different sensations. ASDs include and are not limited to autistic disorder, pervasive developmental disorder, atypical autism and Asperger disorder. Research of autism has been tracked by the Centers of Disease Control for prevalence since 1996, however tracking of developmental disabilities began in the 1980s.
Barking, convulsive tics, grimacing, swearing-- Imagine having frequent involuntary urges of mimicry and repetition of abrupt behaviors. These traits are often associated with Tourette Syndrome, a neurological disorder that researchers believe is caused by and abnormal metabolism of the neurotransmitters, dopamine and serotonin. It is genetically transmitted from parent to child. There is a fifty percent chance of passing the gene on from parent to child. It’s one of the more common genetic diseases detected in one to ten children out of 1,000. The exact cause of Tourette’s syndrome is still unknown, some research suggests that it occurs when the neurotransmitters fail to balance within the brain. Readers question, how someone can go from tossing pots and pans, to being very precise as a highly recommended surgeon. Tourette’s Syndrome does not totally affect a persons life productivity, nor does it it result in an altered life expectancy. Populations not affected by this disorder, fail to understand how someone could suddenly exhibit such normality. Developing a further
Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome, commonly known as “Tourette syndrome,” “Tourette’s,” or simply “TS,” is a chronic neuropsychiatric disorder producing sudden, repetitive movements and sounds, known as “tics,” which are beyond an individual’s control. The condition is named after French physician Georges Gilles de la Tourette, who first published an account of its symptoms in the 1880s (Felling & Singer, 2011, p. 12387). Once considered a rare disorder, Tourette syndrome is currently estimated to occur in mild to severe forms in as much as 2% of the population (Bohlhalter et al., 2006, p. 2029). Today, Tourette syndrome affects the lives of
