The source, or beginning, of the Mississippi River is Lake Itasca in Minnesota. The end of the river is 2,320 miles away in Louisiana. Here, the mouth, or end, of the Mississippi River empties into the Gulf of Mexico. Between these two points, the Mississippi River passes through or borders ten states: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

There are many major cities that are located on the Mississippi River. Some notable examples include Minneapolis, Minnesota; St. Louis, Missouri; and New Orleans, Louisiana.
