Dragon's Blood The name “Dragon's Blood” refers to a type of resin, so named for its bright red color. This red resin is harvested from several different species of the rattan palm tree, of a number of distinct plant genera. Generally speaking, the Dragon Tree is very distinct in shape, with growth patterns similar to that of palms. It is a flowering tree, blooming in February with berries appearing 5 months afterwards. Depending on the species, dragon's blood resin can either be harvested from these berries, or from the sap that bleeds from the tree trunk once it is cut. Its native habitat is on the northern shores of the Mediterranean, although it is mostly cultivated in England, France, Germany, and North America. The name “Sage” comes from the Latin “Salvare,” meaning “savior” or “to cure”. For the purpose of this essay I will be discussing the two major genii of Sage typically used for smudging: Salvia is the genus used for cooking, and comes in two varieties: S. officinalis (Garden Sage), and S. apiana (White Sage). Artemisia is the genus commonly known as “Sagebrush” and includes A. californica (Common Sagebrush), as well as A. vulgaris (Mugwort).
