The big summer headline that I have chosen Cecil the Lion. According to an article in The New York Times, the thirteen year old lion was lured out of his out of his sanctuary in a Zimbabwean national park which was placed there to lead Cecil to cross into an unprotected area by hunters. After being lured out, a Dr. Palmer – a dentist, shot the lion, first with a crossbow. The shot with the arrow was not able to kill Cecil and he ran away. He was tracked for nearly two days before finally being killed with a gun shot. Cecil was then decapitated and skinned, leaving the carcass of the lion. Once he was found to be the murderer of the beloved Cecil, he was mobbed digitally. His Yelp page was overrun with many comments blaming him along with his dentistry website was taken offline and many parody accounts popped up of his office. …show more content…
The nature enthusiasts and conservations troubles by wealthy big-game hunters were outraged. On the other hand, hunting advocates, along with some conservationists, argue that the selling of licenses to big-game hunters can pay for efforts to actually protect endangered species. Basically, this article is pretty even in sides and brings up the question of whether or not the killing of Cecil was correct of not. For me, it is not right at all. I have never been a big advocate of hunting, but I do understand why hunting must occur sometimes. Some situations that I find morally acceptable are when containing a population of animals to protect and ecosystem or having to hunt for food and
In the article "Death Of Beloved Lion Heats Up Criticism Of Big Game Hunting." NPR. NPR, n.d. Web. 26 Sept. 2016. it displays the horror that was led to believe that cecil’s killing was non negotiable. Evidence In the article it begins to explain the episodes beginning to happen due to the cause of the death. From the actions of the Dr.
Hunting has become a staple of American traditions since the beginning of the first hunter/gatherers, to the Native Americans who have lived in the U.S for millennia, even all the way until present day. Much of today’s society looks at hunting as a cruel activity when in reality it has more of a positive effect on the environment than it does harm. There are an abundance of benefits that come from hunting. Some of the benefits of hunting are: it is the biggest contribution to conserving wildlife, the meat is healthier than commercially produced meat, many jobs are being supported out of hunting, and every hunter wants “to bag” the trophy animal; however, there are a few cons to this, which include poaching and interference by the activist
To put this on equal terms, think one day you and your family are taking a leisurely stroll down the park. While walking down the spark another person randomly tries to kill you. But, no one but your mom is wounded with a poisoned wound without an antidote. Frighten you would not be able to know or think straight with the sight of someone dear to you dying right in front of your eyes. Now if you would please take that picture and put it in terms of an animal being hunted by another species far more advanced, without a way to protect themselves. Is it really morally right to kill another living thing for sport? Especially when the animal involved is on the endangered species list, to be fair, it is on the endangered species list for a reason because it is on the verge of becoming extinct. So let me ask you again why should anybody think it's more to hunt and kill animals that are endangered or simply in our backyards. it is morally wrong to continue trophy hunting as a Leisure activity when endangered animals are
A little over a year ago there was a public outcry over the death of an African lion by the name of Cecil. Cecil was an alpha male who lived in a national park in Zimbabwe. He was a popular animal for park visitors and was tracked by the wildlife
Trophy hunting is an ongoing issue, there are 500,000 black bears in Canada. 29,300 are bears that are legal to kill every year. Activist not in favor of the bear killings try to stop bear hunter but do sometimes go overboard. About 15 activists have been charged but the charges have been dropped. Many bear hunters do kill for fun and for the thriller of it. This does cause a resistance to authority because many believe it is unfair to why bears are being killed for no reason, and how many of the bear hunters are
In Heather Wilhelm’s “Cecil the Lion and America’s Broken Outrage Meter,” written in 2015, the killing of Africa’s most beloved lion is discussed and tried. Cecil the Lion is one of Zimbabwe’s most famous animals and is located on his own natural preserve. Dr. Walter James Palmer, dentist from Minnesota, hired a group of “professional guides” to assist him in the hunting of the king of the jungle. Palmer says he did not know of Cecil the lion and only wanted to sportily hunt the animal, not to cruelly murder him. This controversy has been going on for over 3 months now on what really happened and who is responsible for the bloodshed of the famous lion. Celebrities such as Sharon Osbourne, Jimmy Kimmel, and even PETA themselves have suggested
Hunting has always been argued in being beneficial or critical to the environment. Especially, in recent world topics as well as the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell. Mr. Sanger Rainsford in “The Most Dangerous Game” changes his opinion on hunting. The short story states, “The world is made up of two classes—the hunters and the huntees.” This quote illustrates that Rainsford is expressing his philosophy on what he believes hunting is, and not having a problem with it. As you can see, it is my position that hunting is beneficial to the environment because it balances out the ecosystem, and teaches humans the value of nature.
It was an astounding season of making new friends, bonding, improving skill level and learning with the lady lions. The girls went through intense training which in turn helped them keep the odds balanced. Mr.Benoit brought in the outside help of four professional womens' rugby players to assist coaching the girls which benefited the lady lions tremendously, Congratulations on your incredible season ladies, you should feel greatly accomplished. We may be at an end for now, but wait until next year when you come back with more fierceness lady
The dwindling population of these majestic creatures was falling steadily, and it only accelerated when Palmer fatally shot Cecil. The fine for killing an endangered species was very large, and people faced jail time for crimes similar to this caliber. Palmer, however, evaded this charge and presided in his home following the incident. Again, if Palmer was rightfully charged, most of the community backlash would be no more, and he would be free of his public burden. Cecil’s death also sparked a cascade of deaths within his
In conclusion, I don’t agree with big game hunting because statistics show that non lethal nature viewing benefits more than simply killing animals for money. Not only that, but they kill the animal, only taking the parts they want and leaving the rest to rot. To kill an innocent creature for bragging rights is simple
Cecil the Lion were part of many endangered species. It is a major crime to kill animals that are endangered. Palmer knew that Cecil was a special lion to the National Parks. Walter Palmer lured Cecil out of captivity, and he maliciously killed Cecil. Palmer also put Cecil’s cubs in danger.
Cecil the lion was a beloved lion, as he was a major attraction at the Hwange game reserve. Cecil was also being studied up until his death by Oxford University as part of a larger study conducted by the university. The study had already received nearly half a million dollars in contributions. Cecil was shot by Walter Palmer with an arrow. Then forty hours later, after the lion’s suffering and misery, Palmer finished off Cecil with a rifle. (CBS 10) After the report, Palmer closed his office in Bloomington, Minnesota and went into hiding for the time being after the murder of Cecil the lion. Cecil was then found by the Zimbabwe conservation Task Force beheaded and skinned. Cecil’s six lion cubs will most likely be killed by another adult lion according to David Salmoni, Animal Planet’s predator expert. (CBS 9) The aforementioned events are why lion hunting should be outlawed and illegal. People like James Palmer, don’t care about the lives of animals like Cecil the lion, yet Cecil was a main attraction at the game
In 1187 the muslim leader Saladin reconquered the city of Jerusalem. Then Frederick of europe, Barbarossa of Germany, Philip of France and Richard I mounted a campaign to rescue the city. This is when the third crusade was under way. The main reason the campaign was so successful was the capture of the port city of Acre. King richard got there on June 1191 to find a city under siege by a christian army. This is where Saladin came in his army was too weak to overwhelm the designers and too strong to be dislodged (remove from a position of power or authority) so Richard and the French King Philip slowly broke the city's walls to weaken the city's defences while simultaneously (at the same time)
When a Minnesota dentist killed a prized African lion named "Cecil" he received an onslaught of criticism and reignited the debate concerning hunting. I hunt. I have hunted for years and I don't see anything wrong with it. The reasons I hunt are for the meat, I think it tastes better than store-bought meat and it doesn't have any additives in it, and for the time I get to spend out in the mountains. However, there are some people who are against hunting.
Everyday thousands of animals are brutally murdered by people that participate in the recreational activity that is hunting. Hunting is an activity that involves a person attempting to kill or trap an animal. Hunting is mainly done to animals in the wildlife and often in cases are used for food, clothing, recreation or trade. In my opinion hunting is morally wrong.
