The topic of “Black Lives Matter” has been one of the most controversial topics of 2016. It seems like you can’t turn on the TV and not see something that involves Black Lives Matter. If you don’t know what Black Lives Matter is it, is a movement to suggest that white people, especially white cops, don’t care about black lives, and target black people. Which could not be further from the truth. Cops actually killed about twice as many whites than they did blacks in 2015. Actually only 26 percent of people who were killed by police were black, as 50 percent were white, and a majority of these victims had guns or lethal weapons. A common argument against this stat is that blacks make up 13 percent of the population and whites make up 62 percent. But the Bureau of Justice Statistics reveal that blacks were charged with 62 percent of robberies, 57 percent of murders and 45 percent of assaults in the 75 biggest counties in the country, despite only comprising roughly 15 percent of the population in these counties. (Mac Donald) Blacks also are responsible for 75 percent of all shootings, 70 percent of all robberies, and 66 percent of all violent crime in New York, where they make up 23 percent of the …show more content…
Colin took his support to a whole new level of disgraceful when he decided to sit during the national anthem. Which honestly goes right along with the Black Lives Matter movement of how disrespectful it was to not stand for our anthem, and show respect to our troops who are currently and have protected our freedom. But with all the famous people who do support the movement it just adds fuel to the fire of Black Lives Matter because now the average black person sees there favorite athlete or singer supporting this movement and immediately follow in there footsteps without knowing what they are really
Why is it that “#blacklivesmatter” is only read and hashtagged in regards to police brutality? How come the names of Sandra Bland, Michael Brown, and Trayvon Martin are instantly recognized, but most people question who Amber Monroe, Elisha Walker, and Shade Schuler are? Why was Bruce Jenner’s transformation into Caitlyn Jenner more important than the deaths of the 17 transgender woman murdered this year? A hate crime is defined as “a crime motivated by racial, sexual, or other prejudice, typically one involving violence.” Monroe, Walker, and Schuler are all African American transgender woman and victims of hate crimes. This isn’t a situation where only black transgender woman lives are being taken though, all transgender women are suffering
Many say that black people hold 26% of the shootings but are only 10% of the total population. This is invalid as many will know that in the inner cities and poor neighborhoods like the streets of chicago many are involved in violent crimes, resulting in a heart-breaking death. Many will put in that statistic and rely on it with no further information. The millions that see this are influenced, and many people mostly youth begin to believe the false stereotype amongst white cops in particular. “ The second piece of evidence is another statistic showing rates of Police on Black Violence to Black on Police. “The article by the wall street journal says “Officers are killed by blacks at a rate 2.5 times higher than the rate at which blacks are killed by police” As many say cops kill black males unproportionally the FBI says otherwise. The third piece of evidence is also from the Wall Street Journal.“Officers’ use of lethal force following an arrest for a violent felony is more than twice the rate for white as for black arrestees, according to one study” If their was an existing bias it would be in favor of blacks over whites. In many cases in poor neighborhoods where a vast majority of the inhabitants are blacks or hispanic, the crime is higher, and there still continues to be less violence against
When watching the documentary on Kanzi, I was incredibly impressed by his intelligence. Not only could he accurately describe his feelings, he demonstrated understanding complex concepts such as time passing and voice recognition over a phone. Although currently we regard humans as the only sentient creatures on Earth, it can be argued that the amount of self-awareness Kanzi possesses can prove that we are not as different from bonobos as we think. The most impressive character quality Kanzi has is patience. It is unclear how much emotion Kanzi can comprehend in his mind, so we can never know if he enjoys his time in the ape conservation.
In 2013, what started as a Facebook post stating “Black Lives Matter” over the death of a 17-year-old in Florida would develop into a movement over a year later. The Black Lives Matter movement would be in full force after the death of an 18-year-old boy killed in Ferguson, Missouri in 2014 by a white police officer. This death would be the last straw causing many individuals to express grief and outrage as it was just the latest in a long and rapidly growing succession of cases involving police use of lethal force against unarmed people of color. With the outpour of protests, law enforcement would be targeted with animosity and hateful chants such as “Pigs in a blanket, fry-em like bacon” and “What do we want? Dead Cops!” (Blackwell, 2016).
Police have killed 1,001 people in the United States this year. Black people were 26% of those killed despite being only 13% of the population, but why is this? This was the objective Jelani Cobb was trying to figure out when developing the film “Policing the Police”. The film was recorded in Newark, New Jersey due to its plagued by drug trafficking and gang violence and its homicide rate which is nine times higher than New York City. Forty-nine years prior to this film, a riot broke out in downtown Newark due to the beating of an African American cab driver by the police and the Newark police responded by killing people who protested.
That statistic is taken from data collected for the years 1999-2011.There was 1,217 deadly police shooting from 2010 to 2012 in America. Thats just in 2 years, which is a lot for just cops doing the killing. The ages that were killed ranged from 15 - 18 which is a young age for someones life to be taken. Thats 31.17% per million people in America that were killed were in black. The number of white people that were killed by police was 1.47% per million, which is a big difference from the 31 % that were
While racism might appear to be the primary cause of a higher proportion of African American deaths by police, when comparing that to crime rates and police encounters by African Americans, the proportional gap significantly lessens. According to “the counted” police shootings database by the guardian newspaper, police shootings of African Americans in 2016 make up around 25% even though they only make up 13% of the population. This one statistic has led many people from the general public, media, and scholars to attribute this as evidence for racism. What they fail to mention however, is that according to the FBI database on crimes committed by race in 2011, African Americans commit 28.4% of all crimes, 50% of homicides, 55.6% of robberies, and 33.6% of aggravated
“It is estimated that over half a million American veterans were suffering from PTSD in 2004.” (Stern)” [One of these veterans named Harvill,] says the only thing that helped him get through the years of persistent pain was an exuberant, golden Labrador and mastiff mix named Sierra.” (Bowen) This trained Service dog knows how to comfort him during times of anxiety and always makes sure he is not alone. (Bowen)Millions of veterans come home from war facing a number of health care needs, and the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) cannot keep up. Over 10 years of war has produced a huge number of veterans with multiple health problems, and the government and the military have
The purpose of this paper is to describe business practice in detail and provide a comparison of South Korea with that of the United States in regard to business practices. Finally, the researcher will provide a course of actions to deal with the difference in ethical and legal practices when transacting business with a country that has different standards.
Killing nineteen white females and dumping their bodies in a freezer with “Black Lives Matter” carved into their skin and not actually publicizing it not a joke? The bodies were stored for no one to see them but the killers so what good does that do? Was this an act of attention? Did they want to get caught? Most people who dare to make a statement and want to be heard show off their crime in order to negotiate a deal, but this particular set of people were in the same facility where they sat on the evidence of nineteen dead females with a message carved on their skin.
The historical context of social justice has been going on for as long as we can remember. It all has to do with how everyone should have the same equality but of course there are going to be people that often disagree with others. There are many different social justice topics but the one that I will shed some light on is civil rights. Current issues about civil rights include the “Black Lives Matter” movement. This movement supports the lives of unarmed black youth in our country. There have been many articles and stories on the news of this social injustice of young African Americans being treated differently than caucasians.
The black lives matter movement can be deliberated to be a new social movement as it looks at some of the actions which are grounded by policy making and the ideology as the root of collective action. A procedures that fits into this movement is the Collective Behaviour Theory. The theory refers to the events that emerge suddenly and don’t often conform to the laws or rules but as in alternative which is often base on the issues at hand. For instance the Black Lives Matter movement came together as a community as their collective identity matches one another. (Being African American or loosing someone to police violence) This also fits under ‘Grass-roots’ as it is driven by the ‘locals’ who are often
According to a ProPublica analysis of the FBI data, black men are more likely than white men killed by police shooting. This resulted in the creation of the ‘Black Lives Matter’ an activist movement in
Section #1- Introduction/ Thesis Trayvon Martin. Michael Brown. Tamir Rice. These are some names of those who were murdered unjustifiably, sparking the new movement against the racist actions still happening in modern day America known as the Black Lives Matter movement. This movement has swept all over America becoming a hard thing to just ignore with people protesting all over America for racial equality.
Black Lives Matter is an international activist movement that started within the African-American communities. This movement is organized by Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi. Ever since the black people have stepped on American soil, they have continued to be victims of racism and violence. From slavery to lynching to segregation, the black people have suffered alot in this country. In the past few years, there are so many of them that have been targeted by the law enforcement authorities across the country. This movement’s goal is to raise awareness of racism and violence against African-Americans. They wants African-American to live with dignity and respect like other Americans do.
