Approximately 1,825 students between ages 18 to 24 die from alcohol related injuries according to the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Sadly alcohol affects more than just college students. In this paper questions will be answered such as, What is alcoholism? Is alcoholism genetic? What affect does it have on the life of the alcoholic and people around them? What are some steps to getting help? There is a lot more to alcoholism than what is shown on the surface.
Alcoholism is an addiction to the consumption of alcohol or the mental state and compulsive behavior resulting from dependency. Alcoholism begins with the dependency for the substance. Alcoholism is one of the most common addictions of all. In fact “Ten million to

It is considered a very serious disorder and can cause a lot of issues in one's personal and social life. To binge drink is to drink to excess and when done can cause many health risks. By drinking to excess an alcoholic increases their risk of getting: Cirrhosis, a dangerous liver condition where the liver is so damaged that it is unable to function. Anemia which is when the number of oxygen carrying red blood cells decreases tremendously causing the drinker to be short of breath and or lightheaded. High blood-pressure, this is caused by the increase in blood pressure which eventually happens so often that it becomes a chronic issue. There are many more side effects to drinking. Sadly alcoholism does not just affect people's health but it also hurts his/hers personal. Some say that a majority of alcoholics drink because they are depressed while others claim that the alcoholics become depressed when they begin to drink. It is not just the alcoholic but also their family members and close friends that are phased throughout this process. Alcoholism can take a toll on life. Because the addiction is so strong alcoholics do not care what they have to go through to be drunk and once they are drunk their personalities can change entirely. Alcoholics will deal with things such as job struggles. If a man shows up to work drunk from the night before or even from that morning they will not last very long at there job. He/She may begin to have financial struggles. Alcohol, especially liquor, is not cheap. Alcoholics do not care what the cost is they just want to be drunk. They depend on the alcohol therefore they are willing to spend whatever they can. He/She may begin to spend money that is not even theirs causing debt that they will not be able to get out of because all of the money goes to the addiction. Alcoholism can cause strains on
After watching the videos on Alcoholics Anonymous and reading about it in my book, I learned that while it works for some it may not work for all. Alcoholics anonymous works because it follows explicit rules while having the support of others who have come across similar circumstances. Further, it works because it is a free program available to everyone. In my opinion, I think it works for some individuals because of its anonymous nature. Additionally, due to the self-help approach that it provides, alcoholics can benefit the most by this because they can work together and help each other due to the similar situations encountered. On the other hand, it may not work for everyone because some individuals may see the program as a religious affiliation
“Further, AA members are much more likely to revert to binge drinking than are alcoholics seeking other forms of treatment.” Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is an organization that helps people overcome their addiction to alcohol. Alcoholics Anonymous does not help people break free from their addiction to alcohol.
techprogram/paper_40822.htm)." Some other effects that can happen from drinking is that students get in trouble with police, vandalism, get injured, or even worse, death. Over 1,400 students are killed annually because of their alcohol use, according to researchers at the Boston University School of Public Health. This survey also claims that over 600,000 students a year are assaulted by other students who have been drinking. Additionally, over 70,000 are the victims of sex assaults or date rapes in similar circumstances. These are very disturbing figures. Thirty-one percent of college students met criteria for a diagnosis of alcohol abuse and 6 percent for a diagnosis of alcohol dependence in the past 12 months, according to questionnaire-based self-reports about their drinking. Drinking heavily seems to bring out more difficulties in a person's life and can only continue the same way as an adult. One starts to rely on alcohol to solve problems and may continue throughout their life because their body becomes dependent on alcohol to make them feel good again.
The theme of John in writing his Gospel is the manifestation of Christ’s glory. To accomplish his purpose the apostle selects some of those things in the life and work of Christ that exhibit most clearly his true character and mission (Vaughn, 1965). John explicitly said in his purpose statement (John 20:30-31) that the aim of his Gospel is to present Jesus as the promised Messiah of the Old Testament Scriptures and the unique Son of God. John’s primary means of revealing Jesus as the divine Messiah is the seven sign-miracles and their attendant contexts of teaching, all of which are recorded in the first twelve chapters (Kim, 2010).
The social implications of alcoholism are somewhat endless. According to an alcohol rehabilitation website (www.promises.com/articles/social-effects-alcoholism/) they list the following the following implications:
Managing today’s public organization is much more complicated than it was ten to twenty years ago. The external environment is changing faster than organizations can move to meet the changing demands. The ideology behind the bureaucracy or public organization is much like that of our United States Constitution, designed for stability and endurance. For this reason, the public organization has operated internally under strict guidelines while resisting change. These ideas have passed through generations of bureaucrats as, "the way things are done." In this manner, organizations hire specialists to perform routine procedures to provide some good, product, or service to the community. Employees are
Alcohol dependence is known to be the most severe form of alcohol abuse. A person becomes so dependent on alcohol consumption that he/she loses sight of all the other important things going on around him/her. Family matters and social responsibilities become secondary worries to his/her primary concern for existence, which is drinking (Stephens, 2007). Nearly fourteen million Americans are somewhat dependent on alcohol. Alcohol dependence is more prominent in men, and young adults ages 18-29 (Stephens, 2007). According to a study done by Saitz “85,000 deaths, along with substantial disability from medical and psychiatric consequences, injuries and “secondhand” effects (ex: motor vehicle crashes) are attributed to the use of alcohol” (Saitz, 2005).
I believe healthy individuals should be able to sell their organs because it is their body and they should be able to do whatever they want with it. Since there are so many people on the list for needing organs, most of them end up dying because they cannot wait for a donor to come along. If it were legal to have people who want to sell their organs, many more individuals on that list would be able to live. Having the option to sell your organs can also help individuals receive money if they are in need of it or if they just want more money to have. Many people in this world would do anything to receive more money, and if having to sell one of your organs is what it takes, many people would be up for that. Being able to sell your organs should
Often, the alcohol will bring out a violent temper and often, alcoholics abuse, physically and mentally, their friends and family. Drinking makes the drinker feel he is more confident. The drinker thinks he is in control, even if a little high, and he might get behind the wheel of his car and go for a drive. Drunk driving is deadly. Hundreds of thousands of people get killed every year due to drunk driving.(Castro 60) Other physical effects of drinking are vomiting, passing out and sometimes, if enough alcohol is consumed over a long enough period of time, or if mixed with other drugs, death.
The term “alcoholism” describes a drinker who is mentally and physically dependent on alcohol, and who would most likely have withdrawal symptoms upon trying to quit. This dependence prevents most alcoholics from being able to control when they drink and how much they drink. For that reason, alcoholics usually drink to excess despite the consequences. Alcoholism, like any addiction, is a chronic disorder which involves continued use despite negative consequences and requires ongoing treatment and management. This research paper will cover many aspects of alcoholism including the causes and effects of drinking and different treatment approaches.
Alcoholism is a primary, chronic disease with genetic, psychosocial, and environmental factors influencing its development and manifestations. The disease is often progressive and fatal. Alcoholism is a complex disease with physical, social and psychological consequences, but it can be treated through detoxification and anti-anxiety drugs. What will be explained in this essay is basically the history of alcohol, signs of one possibly being an alcoholic, possibilities to why one becomes an alcoholic, and treatments for it.
While drinking might make you feel good now, if you abuse that alcohol it may lead to serious complications later. Heavy drinking is defined as consuming four or more drinks in a day for women and five or more drinks in a day for men (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2010). Alcohol is considered a depressant, so it is only seen fit that one of the chief effects of alcohol on the brain is to depress central nervous system functioning. In turn it may be why major depressive disorders occur in those who abuse alcohol. If the alcohol abuse continues over a period it intensifies into an alcohol dependency. Alcohol has effects on the body both mentally and physically. After a certain limit alcohol will slur your speech, increase your reaction time, and make you lose co-ordination. Alcohol consumption, particularly long-term alcohol dependence has many physiological ricks to consider, such as permanent damage to the brain, alcoholic liver disease, pancreatitis, alcohol poisoning
There are some long-term effects on the body due to the abuse of alcohol. You can end up with brain damage, and dementia. Common disease resulting from excessive alcohol consumption are pancreatitis, gastritis, hepatitis, cirrhosis of the liver, and heart disease. Alcoholics are also at risk for developing cancer in the mouth, throat, esophagus and even the liver. You can also develop psychiatric problems such as depression and anxiety which may lead to suicide. Woman who are pregnant shouldn’t drink alcohol because it will cause damage to the fetus.
Alcoholism is a very serious disease, which can cause illness, death, injuries, schooling problems, family breakups, and crime. It is a proven fact the alcohol kills more people than any other illegal drugs combined. However, alcohol courses freely through American society, from college bars to corporate lunches. In a recent journal article by The Scientist, it is stated, "Technology shows alcohol abuse changes brain's molecular programming and circuitry? (Scientist). Thus revealing that alcohol is a quick fix that will hurt us all in the long run.
Alcoholism has been a major problem in society for a number of years. In fact, alcoholism should be compared to a virus. This is because a person can never be completely cured from alcoholism; they can only fight the battle, day to day, hoping not to relapse. When it comes to the etiologies, or causes, of alcoholism, there seems to be three distinct origins of alcoholism. These causes are genetic factors, dependency caused by brain chemical imbalances after long-term use, and social and emotional factors.
