Rene Descartes Meditations On First Philosophy

In Meditation Two of René Descartes’ Meditation on First Philosophy, he notes the sight of “men crossing the square.” This observation is important as Descartes states, “But what do I see aside from hats and clothes, which could easily hide automata? Yet I judge them to be men.” This is an important realization as Descartes argues that instead of purely noticing the men through sight, it is actually “solely with the faculty of judgement,” the mind, that perceives and concludes that the thing wearing a hat and clothes are men. I argue that this view of the outside world by Descartes is incomplete as his idea of “I” is faulty, as well as having a misunderstanding on the importance of the senses.

In Rene Descartes, Meditations on First Philosophy, Descartes does and experiment with wax to try to prove that things actually exist in this world. This essay is going to prove how we can tell that things actually exist and what can perceive the wax.

Rene Descartes’ third meditation from his book Meditations on First Philosophy, examines Descartes’ arguments for the existence of God. The purpose of this essay will be to explore Descartes’ reasoning and proofs of God’s existence. In the third meditation, Descartes states two arguments attempting to prove God’s existence, the Trademark argument and the traditional Cosmological argument. Although his arguments are strong and relatively truthful, they do no prove the existence of God.

René Descartes’ argument that he does not know his piece of wax through his senses is rather straightforward. First, his sensory perceptions of the wax are its color, scent, sound, texture, temperature and the like. However, these purported properties of the wax are not constant; if the wax is brought close to a flame, its color, sound, texture and all the rest will change. Nevertheless, Descartes claims, no one would deny that the object now by the fire is the same wax that was first away from the fire. The Meditations on First Philosophy by Rene Descartes is a thorough analysis about doubt. Descartes describes his method of doubt to determine whether he can truly know something. One of his major arguments is the proof of the existence of God. In this paper, I will attempt to unravel the flaws in Descartes proof that God exists.

In Descartes’ Meditations on First Philosophy, Descartes begins a quest into his own mind and existence by putting all of his beliefs up for questioning in order to determine what can be certain and what can be doubted. He realized that he was able to doubt if he had a body in instances of dreaming or of illusions. But, he was unable to doubt the fact that he had a mind because the mind is the “the thinking thing” that processes all the doubts of his existence. Descartes’ mechanism into figuring out the truth is to doubt everything. Descartes argues that the mind and the body are completely separate entities because of the minds capability to exist on its own. Despite the fact that his argument is well assembled and explained, there are a few doubts and situations which make it unclear as to whether the mind really has a purpose without the body.

In the “Second Meditation,” of “Meditations on the First Philosophy,” Descartes contends that, even if a “malicious deceiver” was purposefully attempting to trick him, one thing is “necessarily true”. “I am…only a thing that thinks…a thinking thing.” From this, Descartes asks, “What else am I?” His answer is that he is not just a body, or a “…thin vapour which permeates the limbs…” He is something, which is identical with his awareness of himself yet, what that is, he is not sure. Accordingly, Descartes can only make judgments about the things known to him, because judgment is thinking, and thus, he knows that he exists. This, for Descartes, is the first thing he can be certain of, that he does exist, as something that thinks.

In Descartes’ Meditations on First Philosophy, I will be considering if Descartes resolution to the “dreaming argument” seems acceptable to trust. The First Meditation is where the “dreaming argument” is first mentioned and then gets resolved later in the Sixth Meditation and the Objections and Replies. I will be touching on the idea that our experiences could be dreaming experiences based on personal experiences and thoughts I have had regarding this topic. Then I will go on to explain how it is possible to tell which state you are in from what Descartes has stated in his meditations and the experiences that have helped me to conclude this debatable matter. I believe that Descartes’s resolution is an adequate and in this paper I will explain why.

Rene Descartes decision to shatter the molds of traditional thinking is still talked about today. He is regarded as an influential abstract thinker; and some of his main ideas are still talked about by philosophers all over the world. While he wrote the "Meditations", he secluded himself from the outside world for a length of time, basically tore up his conventional thinking; and tried to come to some conclusion as to what was actually true and existing. In order to show that the sciences rest on firm foundations and that these foundations lay in the mind and not the senses, Descartes must begin by bringing into doubt all the beliefs that come to him by the senses. Descartes has an apparent determination to prove his theory on his individual existence in the world and the existence of God to backup and prove himself and his theories. At the beginning of meditation two, Descartes is stuck in the middle of nothingness. He has nothing, nothing to believe in and everything around him he regards as false. This is because he cannot believe what he has learned and he is also unable to trust his senses due to the fact that they deceive him. He feels like he is drowning in a whirlpool and cannot reach the top and get out nor can he put his feet on the bottom and stand. Everything in the world at this point he has called into doubt, including himself. Everything that he has ever seen, learned or thought is now external from what he deems to be true.

Descartes uses the dream experience and the idea of an evil genius to explain that our senses can deceive us. Descartes explains that there is systematic doubt meaning our sense experiences such as sight, smell, touch, taste, and hear can deceive us. However, Descartes explains how sight (vision) can deceive us, such as our dreams. Descartes goes in deeper to explain his dream theory in the First Mediation in the Meditations on First Philosophy by saying that there isn't a way for us to determine whether the experiences in our dreams from those experiences when we are awake because they are “real” that they are able to deceive us. This is because while we are dreaming, we usually are not aware that we are dreaming.

Descartes’ first meditation, his main objective is to present three skeptical arguments to bring doubt upon what he considers his basic beliefs. Descartes believes this to be an intricate part of his complete epistemological argument. Descartes skeptical arguments are not intended to be a denial of his basic beliefs. On the contrary, he uses these arguments to help prove one of his main theses, which is the existence of God. One of the main premises that Descartes uses in his proof for the existence of God comes from the evil demon argument, which he proposed, in the first meditation. It is this evil demon argument, which will be the topic of the following discussion.

In the Third Meditation of Discourse on Method and Meditations on First Philosophy by Rene Descartes, Descartes gives a proof for the existence of God. Descartes starts out by stating his general rule that everything he can clearly and distinctly perceives must be true. However, Descartes stated in the First Meditation that he can doubt things that are clear and distinct to him on the basis that he is being deceived by God. In order to prove his rule to be true, he needs to prove the existence of God and that he is not a deceiver (Descartes 70-71).

Descartes believes that knowledge comes from within the mind. This is a single indisputable fact to build on that can be gained through individual reflection. While seeking true knowledge, Descartes writes his Six Meditations. In these meditations, Descartes tries to develop a strong foundation, which all knowledge can be built upon. In the First Meditation, Descartes begins developing this foundation through the method of doubt. He casts doubt upon all his previous beliefs, including “matters which are not entirely certain and indubitable [and] those which appear to be manifestly false.” (Descartes, p.75, par.3) Once Descartes clears away all beliefs that can be called into doubt, he can then build a strong base for all true

Rene Descartes is one of the most known French philosophers among the world’s known philosophers. The most common phrase of Rene Descartes is “I think, therefore, I am” that is universally known. He further says that human being use different reasoning in an attempt to have the most equitable endowment and tackles a question on the most appropriate way that individuals might use reasoning. In his book, Meditations on First Philosophy, Rene Descartes presents an argument that opposes an individual’s trust of senses. His works are appealing but to some extent is a sense of oddity that is noticed. This paper will discuss Rene Descartes views on the sense of data, what is appealing about his argument on the senses in relation to the actual meditations.
