As the Roman empire fell, a new era unfolded. This era was known as The Middle Ages, also referred to as the Dark Ages. The Dark Ages: A Terrible Time in History The Dark Ages was a terrible time because of death, disease, and war. This horrible time took place in Europe. It occurred in the years 4th century A.D. to 1100 A.D. The lands were swarming with barbarians and disease, and the people were in constant terror.
