Chapter 5: Moving forward Inspiration, despite its great powers, is a fickle thing. The mind is just like a muscle — despite learning new skills when practiced daily, it can also be given to bouts of tiredness when used consistently. At this point, inspiration often dies down, no matter how strong it had been. It becomes a mere memory, instead of a powerful force driving you forward. This is why I had asserted two chapters back that forming habits is the surest way to success, and not inspiration. However, that doesn’t mean one should forget about the latter’s life-changing possibilities! Seeking Inspiration Thankfully, nowadays inspiration is all around us. The Internet, for one, is teeming with inspiring stories. There are lots of those …show more content…
The moment is gone And what do we do? We may not keep on swimming all the time (we need rest, too!) but when it comes down to it success is measured by whoever moved those tails and fins in the most productive way. Then there’s the Denzel Washington-led hit, “Remember the Titans”. This is a poignant movie, as this not only gives a picture of rising above the odds (despite some historical inaccuracies in the Titans portrayal) but also gives an idea of how tough it can be to work with others when you don’t see eye to eye. As I have narrated, I had first-hand experience of this in my career. But with the right strategy, everything can be resolved. This was exemplified by Head Coach Boone in that momentous half-time scene: We’re gonna make some changes on defense. They’re spreading us out too far. This scene also exemplified the importance of making adjustments on the fly, and making important analyses to improve your game. In the world of literature, there’s the J.R.R Tolkien classic The Hobbit, my favorite in the Lord of The Rings saga. I felt like Gandalf was calling me to action when he spoke to Bilbo: I am looking for someone to share in an adventure that I am arranging, and it’s very difficult to find …show more content…
Relationships are the spice of life, and that’s true regardless of age. Eve to the greatest introvert, it’s still important to nurture connections and relationships and to create new ones, should one wish to progress in life. Thankfully, at this stage this would be much easier. Another advantage of the midlife is the fact that you have already met a lot of people. You may have met them as friends, as colleagues, as mere acquaintances. During all those meetings, are there any particular people that had caught your attention in a positive way? Is there someone that made you think, “Gee, I wish I know this person better” or “I wish I could be more like this person”? Then now is the time to reach out to them and start a connection! You may have heard of the phrase “you are the average of the five people you hang out with”. This is true, as when we stick around to people too much some of their qualities (whether good or bad) start to rub off on us. We become like them in a certain way. This is why it’s important to seek out those people who inspire us, those people who empower us, and to let them into our circle. You could end up making a new friend, or at the very least have a meaningful conversation where you can draw new inspiration
Ever had a dream about going on an adventure, and dealing with a dragon? This was a life story of a hobbit. In the Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkein, a hobbit named Bilbo becomes a leader while tapping into his braveness, cleverness, and fearlessness.
“Then something Tookish woke up inside him, and he wished to go and see the great mountains, and hear the pine-trees and the waterfalls, and explore the caves, and wear a sword instead of a walking stick”{Tolkien, The Hobbit 28}. This gives an exemplar of the ‘Tookish side’ calling Bilbo to adventure. “‘Yes, you have! Twice now. My pardon. I give it you. In fact I will go so far as to send you on this adventure. Very amusing for me, very good for you- and profitable too, very likely, if you ever get over it’”{Tolkien, The Hobbit 19}. This demonstrates Gandalf being the ‘ call to adventure’ by insisting Bilbo go on his
The call to adventure in most novels is, people or creatures soon become a hero’s dwelling and ask them to go on an adventure or journey with them. Bilbo’s call to adventure in The Hobbit was; Gandalf came and told Bilbo about the dwarves’ situation and the huge party the dwarves are going to have at Bilbo’s house before they set off on their quest. During the party, Gandalf tells Bilbo he will be the burglar. “Let’s have no more argument. I have chosen Mr. Baggins and that ought
Before the game Coach Boone is telling the team how even if they lose they will still be champions. Coach Yoast also says "I hope you boys have learned as much from me this year as I've learned from you. You've taught this city how to trust the soul of a man rather than the look of him. And I guess it's about time I joined the club".This shows that Coach Yoast is very proud of his team. He is saying how they have taught him stuff even though he is the coach. They have showed him that you should always follow someone's personality, not how good or bad they look on the
Prior to Bilbo’s departure, when Gandalf initially offered the hobbit an adventure, he kept repeating, “we don’t want any adventures here, thank you” as he attempted to try and send Gandalf on his way. While Gandalf and the dwarves were planning their journey, upon hearing
The bold decisions one makes are ultimately decided by their ability to be daring and intelligent. In the novel The Hobbit, a fantasy tale written by J.R.R Tolkien in 1937, follows the treacherous journey made by a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins and his many friends. He and his friends make the trek through middle earth to recover lost treasure that was stolen by Smaug, a huge fire breathing dragon. Bilbo Baggins uses his cleverness and heroic capabilities to help assist on his valiant journey. Bilb Baggins’ heroic actions in the novel The Hobbit shine through when in a life or death situation.
Throughout my life, I have never been satisfied. I am always striving for more. I want to make an impact with this life I have, and not waste any second of it. I feel as though it is my obligation to not only be inspired, but be the inspired. It’s
“Going on from there was the bravest thing he ever did. The tremendous things that happened afterward were as nothing compared to it. He fought the real battle in the tunnel alone, before he ever saw the vast danger that lay in wait” (132). In J.R.R.Tolkien’s The Hobbit, the reader is taken through a parable that follows Bilbo Baggins on the ‘Hero’s Journey.’ This fantasy classic begins with an ‘everyman’ hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, who takes on a perilous journey to reclaim the dwarves’ homeland, The Lonely Mountain. After being spurred into action by Gandalf, the herald and mentor figure, Bilbo finds himself going on a pernicious venture that contradicts his docile nature, pushing him to play the role of
In J.R.R Tolkien’s fantasy novel “The Hobbit”, Bilbo Baggins likes to keep to himself, safe and sound in his cozy home, until Gandalf pushes him to go on an adventure with the dwarves. Bilbo is very insecure about himself, and is very uncomfortable-but Gandalf sees potential in Bilbo that Bilbo himself cannot. Like Gandalf pushed Bilbo, it is important to have a “Gandal” in our lives. It is important to have a “Gandalf”, because they push us to our full potential, they believe in us, and they help us to be the best version of ourselves that we can be. If Gandalf had not seen potential in Bilbo, then he would have never pushed and encouraged him to go on the adventure.
There are many situations that inspire people to challenge themselves to become a better person or a successful person in life. In the two articles we read in class, both authors were inspired and passionate about finding ways to be successful and have a better life. Baca was inspired to learn how to read and write, so he could express his ideas, beliefs and how he felt in life. Baca stated, “Writing bridged my divided life of prisoner and free man. Writing was water that cleansed the wound and fed the parched root of my heart.’’ For Baco, writing has helped him get justice and becoming a better person. On the other hand, Dr Steve Wright was inspired to find success and happiness by doing activities that have ‘’Flow.’’ Like the two authors,
In the action adventure film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Peter Jackson uses a variety of conventions and cinematic techniques to explore and amplify the emotional intensity of particular scenes. The film follows a traditional action adventure plot whereby heroes defeat villains in a battle where good triumphs over evil and disputes are resolved by physical force or violence. It’s the story of a young, ordinary hobbit named Bilbo Baggins, who lives a peaceful life at Bag End, until Gandalf the wizard pays him a visit where he accepts to set out on an unexpected quest with 13 dwarves.
Prior to the quest, the protagonist is a well-respected and conservative hobbit. He is very neat and methodic. Bilbo Baggins is a simple, routine-loving hobbit who wants nothing more than to live his quiet life inside his home. He does not want to go on adventures or risk missing his next meal. Tolkien commences to develop the story by describing Bilbo’s family, The Bagginses: “They never had any adventures or did anything unexpected.” (Tolkien 3). Certainly Bilbo and his father’s side of family are like most hobbits, comfortable and complacent. When Gandalf invites him to be part of an adventure his respond is negative “ Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things!“ (Tolkien 4). His answer reflects the way many hobbits view adventures. However Bilbo has inherited a streak of adventurousness from
Remember the Titans is a film from 2000 displaying a true story of a racially divided football team from the 1970s. The movie highlights the relationships of the black and white people, and how they learned to interact with each other in a time when this was not the way of life. It brings up a number of questions throughout, of what is right and what is wrong, and really challenges the characters, making it a very interesting movie to watch. I have seen this movie many times, and each time I feel like I get something new out of it. It is a movie that can be used as a teaching tool, it does a great job of interpreting not only what was happening in the United States of America at that time, but social psychology concepts through real life
Relationships and intimacy are important during adulthood, especially during young adulthood. Happiness at this developmental stage often come from relationships that are formed. Even young adults who are not looking to form long-term or lasting relationships typically still focus on connections with others.
Many will say that inspiration is not a big deal with being motivated because self discipline is really all you need; but in fact that isn’t true. For example, self discipline helps you maintained the thrive of being motivated. Plus, it can also be useful for self control because self discipline shows a sign of inner strength which it has the ability to control yourself, your actions, and your reactions. In the article of “Why Self Discipline is Better than Motivation”, it stated, “ Discipline inculcates some great value in you, that are of paramount importance if you want to be productive, like: it will give you self confidence and will have self control.” It means that discipline teaches you great values that can be important if you want to use it in your daily life. Self discipline also gives you the endowment to your decisions and follow them through without changing your mind, and it can also help you overcome addictions, procrastination, and laziness which helps you follow through with whatever you want to do. Therefore, it is one of the important requirements for achieving goals. But even though having self discipline can go on with being motivated, inspirations is more powerful than self discipline.
