The family of Maureen in Toni Morrison’ The Bluest Eye is believing a idea that suits are everything. Some people think these story about Maureen family just an other redundant examples of powerless and hopeless of the black back in 1940s, however, there are something more. It represented the differences and the conflicts inside of the black community. The idea of ‘believing in suits’ means trusting the power on the clothing from the literal levels. This sentence is on page 68, “It’s when you can beat them up if you want to and won’t anybody do nothing. Our family does it all the time. We believe in suits.” (68) Firstly, when Maureen introduced this suits idea to the three little girls, she was using tone of scorn. It shows that her family was better than others blacks. Maureen believes she has more power than any of her neighbors and classmate, even to the whites. She thinks she has everyone attention and she is beautiful, due to the power. Therefore, she was looking down on others and started to order others. She enjoyed her own ‘special permission.’ One of the example about her careless about others, “What do I care about her old black daddy?” (73) She was distinguished herself from the black identity. She does not think she was part of black community, since she was almost powerful as the white. She even hate to be a black people, “I am cute! And you ugly! Black and ugly black e mos. I am cute!” (73) Back in 1940s, the definition of the ugly is black, and keep repeating ‘I am cute’ is an other evidence that proving Maureen was not accepting her identity of the black blood.
