"Religion and violence" is currently one of the most recurrent themes authors write about due to the numerous terrorist actions that consistently occur. These incidents raise multiple questions that the authors of the articles tried to answer by treating different aspects that intersect with religion and violence such as politics and terrorism. The authors of these articles share a lot of ideas and assumptions while simultaneously disagree on others and try to explain certain aspects differently.
First of all, the comparative analysis of the articles shows that the authors agree that the political is indispensable to examine the relationship between religion and violence. In other words, the issue of politics is a crucial theme to

By showing these common viewpoints, both authors highlight the consequences of such categorization on society. By addressing how the religion is portrayed as merely political, the authors seem to give importance to the nature of religion which is also a common theme in some of the other articles. The nature, in this case, is the general concept, not the nature itself that the articles portray differently. In Should we blame Islam for terrorism? Shariamadari emphasizes the importance of the nature of the religion in terms of understanding its interaction with the other components of the trilogy. In addition in How Religion can Lead to Violence, by Gary Gutting, the nature of religion is also a key factor to comprehend the issue of theological violence.
Although the concept of the nature is common in all the articles, they portray different perspectives in defining the nature of religion and its linkage to violence and the political. Gutting, in his article, seems to correlate violence with the absence of a reformation. The religion seems rigid to be tamed in order to be adapted to modernity where religion faces contradiction with civil rights and modern values. This confrontation may lead to violence expressed via politics or in the case of Islam, applying Sharia. Therefore, the nature of the religion as being rigid to transformation seems important to explain violence. That’s why he emphasizes the
Throughout this course we have gone over numerous different topics and issues that all relate to the Bible. The topics range from Genesis and the different accounts of creation to who founded the African Methodist Episcopal Church. A topic that seems very intriguing is Augustine and Tertullian’s theories on war and violence. This paper will discuss the two main theories on violence in the Christian tradition. Throughout history, Christians have had different perspectives on violence. Some of the accounts are on the pacifist side, while others are on the side that violence is necessary in some instances. The two leading authors on violence are Tertullian and Augustine. Tertullian seems to base his facts more on the Bible, specifically Matthew’s teachings. These teachings based his thinking as to why a person should not commit violence under any circumstances. Augustine bases his teachings off of Saint Thomas Aquinas as well as accounts in the bible. These things helped him create what is known as the “Just War Theory”. In the end, one can see how Augustine’s “Just War Theory” is a much more viable option grounded in a Christian tradition which allows for one to practice their faith, but not be pushed around by those looking to forcefully push one away from God.

Maintaining theocratic governments revolves around utilizing religion as the main decision maker for political affairs. Over time, groups of individuals grow indignant with opposing ideologies of how theocracies are enforced. This then creates difficulty for a country to disregard public beliefs of theocracy being portrayed as rule of religion over the state, which results in pressure on governments. Islamic Wahhabism has ultimately led to both of these countries becoming subjected to projecting influence to the Arab world. Many terrorist organizations take advantage of unreliable governments in order to overturn their powers. If these countries support these organizations to prevent revolutions and corruption, other countries becoming judgmental of theocracies is not surprising. Need therefore arises to investigate why conflict and terrorism are viewed as benefactors within the theocratic regimes of these two
Our assignment was to assess a religion that was not our religion and to look at it in the Functionalist light. For this assignment, I chose a religion we have all hear about, Islam. In this paper I shall show how Islam meets the basics of religion and how someone using the Conflict theory would view it.
This model of Christianity is one of the earliest models. The Book of Revelations reflects this model particularly well. The text in the Book of Revelations is full of symbolism to illustrate what Christians persecuted by the Roman Emperors underwent. Faced with hostility from their government, who viewed Christians as treasonous and disloyal, early Christians had to band together to form communities. The hostility from imperial Rome led to the persecution of Christian communities, which lasted for hundreds of years.
Part two of the monograph is titled, “Systematic Violence: Power, Sex, and Religion.” Where as part one of the monograph focuses on the context of “cataclysmic violence,” and refutes irrationalism, part two focuses on the “systematic violence” that occurred among minority groups. It also shows the relationship between tolerance and violence

Pape also discusses the importance of religion in the social logic of suicide terrorism. Religion is either a present factor or not a factor at all in terrorism but it never widens or narrows during the terrorism campaign (127). Lebanon, Punjab, Sri Lanka, and Turkey are all examples of suicidal terrorism campaign that are differently influenced by religion (128). Today Islamic terrorism is probably the most widely known form of terrorism in regards to religion. In these four cases, however, Islam is not evident in any of them.
What this essay attempt to do is examine what terrorism is and look at whether the motivation for terrorism
The main characters of the scarlet letter consist of Hester prynne who was condemed for adultry and punished by having to wear the letter A on her clothes and standing on the plantform of shame for 3 hours. She is the protaginist of the story and the most important role played. She also made an agreement with Mr. Chillingworth that of he did not harm the person she had an affair with she would not reveal that he was her husband. Back at this time it was considered embarassing for a husbands wife to have an affair with another man.
Religion was so central to political and military conflict in the early modern period because religion encompassed the era due to the strongly religious cultural society. The centre of conflict deriving from the Catholic and Protestant divide, which caused conflict within politics and the military, because the opposing sides fought over religious territory and popularity. The centre of the conflict within these sectors of religion was The Reformation and the wars which followed, which created a struggle for power as different religions gained new support and thus power, and others experienced reduced power as a result. The resulting political and military turmoil created the growth of secularism, which attempted to stabilize politics and the military by increasing control. Therefore religion was so central to political and military conflict in the early modern period because the period was so strongly religious that it had more of an impact on political and military conflict than any other factor, because it was held in a higher regard than politics and the military sustained individually.
Religious terrorism is regularly portrayed as demonstrations of unreasonable, silly and indiscriminate violence, along these lines offering few, if any what really spur religious terrorism measures. This presumption about religious terrorism comes from different nations, groups and individual’s. Unbalanced regard for prophetically catastrophic terrorism, and an absence of qualification between religious terrorism and its mainstream partner. This article, in this manner, expects to do four things: characterize and separate religiously inspired terrorism, confidence, and activism along the lines of faith and violence. Furthermore, prescribe a scope of religion, confidence, and terrorism systems in view of these perceptions.
Culture is a great influence among human life. It is who we are and what we are, in a sense. Based on culture, people commit deeds that they believe is approved by their kind. “Certain cultures may simply place little value on human life and in fact believe that life should be sacrificed to their sacred or secular Gods. Such cultures may thus provide the conditions in which Power can operate or diversity have its bloody effect.” (Rummel, 1994). “Strategies of action pertinent to defensive or honor-based violence emerge where the law is unavailable and may be amplified by moderate or high levels of poverty. However, when socioeconomic disadvantage is so severe that there is widespread institutional breakdown, strategies of action promoting more predatory and instrumental forms of violence may also evolve.” (Lee, 2011) Basically, culture is one of the most important influences in a persons decision making and therefore can increase the possibility of homicide and/or another form of violence. Because homicides are such drastic acts, the cross-cultural and historical information on homicide are numerous and basically uncontaminated by reporting biases as compared to data on almost every other human act.
To be honest, I feel like I’m being surveyed by this clerk; he’s just sitting watching my every move as I maneuver around the store. I mean, I know I’m probably offending some people at this store by my attire-- blue and white strapless bikini outfit and shoeless-- because the customers, but mostly the clerk, are not inspecting me. But oh well… I mean me and my girlfriends just came from the beach and we forgot our other changing outfits at home so I hope they’ll let it slide for them and me. As I was walking the aisle the, looking for something to snack and drink on, my other two companions was just sort of just joking and playing around in the store messing and harassing people under their whispers of insult. Then my tall, skinny friend,
