There have been many different relationships between the guards and the prisoners in the Orange is the new Black that would be considered unprofessional and needs to stop. For example, Diaz and Bennett's relationship starts out with flirting but will probably lead to something more that cannot be controlled. The different relationships between the guards and prisoners is protrayed as something thats easy going and isn't a real big concern to the people involved. In order to maintain an athuotive position over the inmates rules need to be enforced and taken seriously by all the staff. As a guard your job to protect the women and control situations that get out of hand from breaking the rules. If favoritism is shown once than they inmates will
With that in mind for a prison guard it makes the job a lot harder, the prison guard doesn’t trust in themselves any longer. Here is a perfect example of prison guards abuse female prisoners, in the state of Michigan in 1997 a prisoner named Tina Mc Graw told a prison Guard named Albert Moon. That she had been raped by another prison guard and furthermore she was thinking very serious about suicide. Instead of getting the help that Tina McGraw needed, and also tell his authorities of what had just happen. Albert Moon planned a second sexual assault on Tina McGraw, at that time Lower Huron Prison was housing Male and Female Prisoner’s! The Former Guard sentencing was just as laughable Albert Moon got two –years’ probation, and 139 days’ in county jail, as time.
Everyone wants respect and inmates look for respect. A lot of the complaints I have seen from inmates is that the officers disrespected them. They feel that the officer does not need to yell, ?get in their face?, and do complete strip searches all the time. IF inmates are treated with a little respect it goes a long way in an inmate being either a ?model or a disruptive? prisoner. It also helps in the
People are sentenced to prison as punishment of a crime that has been committed, not for punishment. The job of a prison guard or correctional officer is to help maintain law and order, to maintain security and to manage the health and safety of staff and prisoners. It is a violation for any authority figure to deny
In the years between 1500 and 1800, the presence of Europeans in Africa was very limited, as they did not venture into the interior of Africa. This was because Europeans had not yet created treatments for malaria and other tropical diseases. However, after the British outlawed slavery, serious exploration into the interior of Africa began. European nations took an interest in imperializing Africa and seizing power over the colonies. The European nations would take any chance they had to seize power and gather the resources of the African colonies so that they could increase the wealth of their own nations.
Ashley Smith was born in Moncton, New Brunswick, and adopted when she was just a little girl. However, at the age of 13, she became very troubled and rebellious, constantly receiving suspensions at school for her impulsive behaviour, which even landed her in youth court several times. At age 15, Smith was convicted and sentenced to one-month incarceration at New Brunswick Youth Centre for throwing crab-apples at a postal worker. Within a few weeks of her sentence, Smith became aggressive towards the correctional staff and repeatedly destroyed her segregation cell. Her behavioral issues didn’t stop there, for instance, at times she threw urine and faecal matter at the guards. Due to Smith’s resistance, self-injurious behavior, and aggression towards the correctional guards, she accumulated several institutional infractions, which added 6-years to her original sentence of a month (DiManno 2012).
I agree that prison staff and visitors need to be searched. The reference made by Peter Esbrandt of how “prison itself is a sterile environment” is a fact. Prison was not designed with placement of contraband within the facility. Likewise, the practice of inmate’s searches slightly limit the flow of contraband. The resulting possibility of contraband introduction from outside sources (visitors and/or prison staff) is high. The general population of citizens and prison staff are law-abiding individual, however there are one or two individuals who break the rules for their benefits. According to Baynes, “…from experience that some staff, albeit a small number can be corrupted, and have been used to bring all sorts of contraband into prisons
Inmate culture is a concern to prison facility because of the impact it can burden upon the prison. The prison code, norm, values, and prison argot are part of their cultures. When an inmate enters into the correctional facility they will adopt a prison lifestyle. Therefore, when they are release many will do the" U-shape curve effective" according to Staton Wheeler. For instance, some inmates, that live a violent lifestyle will congregate with others with the same characteristics (Schmalleger & Smykia, 2016). In my opinion, a drug dealer or gang member will gain a position of importance in the prison setting it gives them a sense of power from other inmates. Donald Clemmer believes that inmates belief, value, and behaviors grow antisocial
The Colorado Department of Corrections has very explicated rules on not having personal relationships with inmates. They can be found on the internet at Colorado Department of Corrections web site http://www.doc.state.co.us/HR/hr.htm#4. They can also be found at the Colorado Corrections Department of Personnel 4CCR801 Personnel Board Rules and Rules and Personnel Director's Administrative Procedures http://www.colorado.gov/dpa/dhr/rules/docs/rules.pdf. Chapter 6 R-6-9, States the Department of Corrections prohibits correctional officers from having sexual relation with inmates. This is even taught at the department of corrections training academy. The one thing the
Ethical Concerns for Risk Management Ethics is not a modern discovery, and as a matter of fact, over the years, studies have been conducted and human behavior has developed different approaches to ethics (Drucker, 1981). Ethics is defined as the concern for others and making the decision to do right just because it the right thing to do (Stephens, Vance, & Pettegrew, 2012). Ethics is a system of moral principles, a cornerstone of corporate governance. Corporate governance is a system by which a company is controlled and managed. Good corporate reputation is built on a solid foundation of ethical culture.

There are have been many occasions where I have read or heard someone say that “what are the prison guards supposed to do? They are overworked, and they get paid little, which makes them exhausted and frustrated.” I believe if the pay gets better, some prison guards would still take advantage of the authority. They acknowledge that they have the power, which can be used to control the inmates even if it means extremely injuring some of the inmates; also, it does not matter if the inmate stops resisting or
Studies show that men are more likely to forcibly abused, however women are more likely to persuaded to participate in sexual activity. In regard to inmate-on-inmate abuse in prison, males are 16% more likely than females who are at 6% to have been victimized over eleven or more times, to have been bribed and offered protection, or threatened with harm. Females are less likely to report incidents that involve multiple perpetrators such as incidents initiated by gang.
What is scarier zombies or what they represent? Looking at the question superficially many would answer that zombies are scarier. Zombies are monsters that kill and therefore seem the scariest. Taking a deeper look zombies are simply extensions of a variety of human fears. Kim Paffenroth, author of “The Symbolism or Meaning of Zombies”, points out that zombies represent “exaggerated aspects of humanity”( Paffenroth, 11). Zombie films often use zombies as symbolism for bigger societal fears. In particular zombie films help cope with human fears concerning individualism and self-identity.
But systems of power may fail for other reasons as well. Those who are in charge may not be willing to exert their power. There may be some corruption among the custodians. Custodians are in close proximity to the prisoners so there may be some blackmail involved in not taking action when supposed to. “In the second place, the guard’s position as a strict enforcer of the rules is undermined by the fact that he finds it almost impossible to avoid the claims of reciprocity” (Sykes, 1958, 56). Third reason is the constant infringement of the guards’ dominance by prisoners. Some of the inadequacies of prison officials have been said to be linked to the fact more than fifty percent of the guards are temporary employees. There is also the low salary for the guards. The job is not seen as very glamorous or worthwhile as well (Sykes,
Some people, guardians and some prisoners, tried to show others that there are in control. They wanted to represent themselves as leaders. And others, some prisoners, were just followers. They wanted just to fit at any price. The experiment has also shown how people can easily embrace a personage. For example, students who were assigned to play guardians. These students tried to reproduce all their knowledge about how prison’s guardians treat
