Throughout the book “The Kite Runner” Khaled Hosseini lets the reader see the ups and down of Amir and Baba’s relationship. Baba is a man that holds his son to a very high standard. He has a very strict view on what a man is and how they should act. Amir on the other hand is nowhere near a manly man like his father would like him to be. Amir doesn’t have a lot of strong qualities about himself like most boys in his neighborhood. He likes to read book about poetry and write alone in his room, he won’t fight when he’s being bullied or even just stand up for himself. Baba is the type of man who likes to take control of things and make sure they are going the way to his liking. At this point in the book the reader starts to understand the sorrow for Amir and his high standards he has to fill. Later on in the book the reader meets Rahim Khan, he says, “Children aren’t coloring books. You don't get to fill them with your favorite colors”(Hosseini 21). This quote is a perfect way of saying that a parent cannot expect their child to follow after them. The child has to make mistakes and learn like everyone else does. Lots of children feel the pressure of living up to their parents expectations just like Amir does to Baba. These expectations shape their lives by trying to living up to those expectations rather than making their own life.
