I had the first idea about Ninoy Aquino when I was in grade school. We always observe a national holiday during his death anniversary which is celebrated every 21st of August. Before, I just knew that he is our national hero and that he is a guy wearing thick glasses, his face can be found printed on a 500 peso bill and that an airport was named after him. But through the years, I started to learn that he was just more than that. I learned that he was a senator and is on the opposition side during the Marcos regime, was the number one bet for Presidency but was assasinated as he went home from the states. He died to fight for the Filipinos. As part of our second long exam in History 1 at school, we were asked to watch the documentary film about Ninoy’s death. For the first time, I was more clarified and I understand it more after watching the film. It pains me a lot because after more than three decades, the gunman or the mastermind of the assasination is not still yet to be known. As a nation and as a race, we as Filipinos sometimes have the capacity to exceed our limtitations that results to us hurting other
“...We govern our children without their consent...Would not the people of the Philippines prefer the just, human, civilizing government of this Republic…” (Doc B, Albert J. Beveridge). I disagree with this black and white view of the world. The Filipinos are grown people capable of making the best decision for themselves. Children are not (due to their undeveloped frontal lobes). They do not need America to save them. They wanted freedom enough to attempt war with Spain, a global power, so they have earned that
The United States, in order to keep growing as a world power, did not have to govern other territories to be prosperous. The U.S. stressed that the Filipinos were incapable of self-government and that the United States had an obligation to civilize them. The United States could've found other means to increase its greatness and power. Means that are morally right and
Gladys: I am afraid of for my daughter’s safety. My husband’s angry outbursts are out of control.
Beveridge indicated that no land in America could surpass the fertile areas in the Philippines where the temperate and tropical climate produced products such as rice, coffee, sugar coconuts and tobacco. His statement, “The mineral wealth of this empire of the ocean will one day surprise the world”, truly indicates his main idea, that the Philippines would help the United States financially and increase its status in the world (Beveridge).
By showing an example of courage to counter the bravery against the America and their domination which shows that they have no fear and they did not lost their hope in life. Rather, they manage to endure, no matter what comes to their front in the matter of their oppression they still try to fight not just being silent. As the authors pointed out that the league insist about imperialist ideas that “Much as we abhor the war of "criminal aggression" in the Philippines, greatly as we regret that the blood of the Filipinos is on American hands, we more deeply resent the betrayal of American institutions at home.” There is no doubt that the America portrayed a great state but their doing of evil things of killing people is not tolerable to any human history. Also, it hard to find out if the enemy is the own homeland and support the America’s domination as they not only the breaking the trust of the country as they reason for the death of the other
First of all I think that the if we would have maybe let some of the well respected citizens in our great nation to speak their opinions and if the government would have listened to the that maybe we could have evaded war and ended our struggle with the Filipinos peacefully. One example of the great citizens that I was talking about would be Mark Twain who said "We have robbed a trusting friend of his land and his liberty; we have debauched America’s honor and blackened her face before the world…" If we would have listened to Mark Twain who knows how things would have ended up!
battle with his rationalization of the murders. He claimed that since Alyona, the first murder victim, was such a parasite to people, it was acceptable to kill her. He never mentions his other victim, Lizaveta, because she was the sweet and harmless one who’s murder he could not
In the beginning of Herman Melville's "Benito Cereno", we were introduced with the character of Captain Amasa Delano. Delano was described as person with "singularly undistrustful good nature, not liable, except on extraordinary and repeated incentives, and hardly then, to indulge in personal alarms" (35). The description of Captain Delano implies that he is a good-natured person with an open hearted mind. Even though, Delano seems like a clever and experienced captain; during the events of the story he appears as a person who is naive to his surroundings. In my research I will try to answer questions regarding why Delano was unaware of the act that Babo and the rest of the slaves were playing.
Our country is rich in culture; the occupation of the Spanish, the American, and the Japanese gave the Philippines its diverse and unique culture. This exceptional culture we have in our country has produced numerous brilliant individuals, who up to this day are still well recognized. So it is safe to say that part of the reason why they became who they were is because of their culture; because of our culture. (Ong, 2011)
The Filipino people value family, religion, selflessness and a hard work ethic. The culture of the Philippines is very family orientated, and the people value their Catholic religion above anything else. For the Experimental Learning Project, I interviewed Clavel Wells and she was born in the Philippines. She was fortunate enough to have grown up in a household that did not face extreme poverty, although that did not take away from her hard work ethic. Growing up in the Phillipines, everyone worked in the household to support the family. That has transpired into her life in America, and now she regularly works hard as her role as an LPN. She ensures to respect everyone she cares for, regardless of their cultural
Another is that Filipinos have a culture of apathy and tend to use religion incorrectly and passively. People depend on religion and settle for what’s okay. In addition, the initial reaction of Filipinos to change is resistance, and this is why the country does not necessarily progress, or at least, progress at a continuous rate. Then, countries like Spain and Portugal only rode the “economic tiger” after “they realized that the only way to survive was change” (3.Y). Plus, according to another critic, the Philippines already had the experience of being under the parliamentary system during the time of Marcos which only resulted in a People Power Revolution. So why should the country bother going back to that? (4.Y)
In the past few years, Macau has become an international destination. The liberation of gaming license had bought about large foreign investments and facilities infrastructure. Macau, a sparkling metropolis at night, is home to thousands of overseas Filipino workers . One of its eye-catching characteristics is certainly its large Filipino community. Filipinos represent the second largest group of non-resident workers in Macau after mainland Chinese. It also becomes abundantly clear that these people are mostly found working in lower paid jobs. Maybe because the most compelling advantages the Philippines has over any Asian country, is the fact that Filipinos are competent and highly-educated. However, more
“Rizal had a burning desire to know exactly the conditions of the Philippines when the Spaniards came ashore to the islands. His theory was the country was economically self-sufficient and prosperous. Rizal entertained the idea that it had a lively and vigorous community enriched with the collective and sensitive art and culture of the native population. He
The Philippines was very lucky because our country was rich in natural resources. And that is the reason why many foreign countries had colonized our country.
Jesse Robredo's sudden death made the Filipinos realize what he has done for the country. People began to see him as a role model for good governance because of his excellent service as the former Mayor of Naga City and as the Secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government. He was responsible for the carrying out and implementation of some reform programs and movements. He wasn’t just an excellent politician but he was also an ideal family man because he always made sure to spend time with his family. Jesse Robredo is not just admirable because of his good governance but also he served as an inspiration to many because of all his accomplishments that got him to where he was. Jesse Robredo was a perfect example of a good leader and he is someone we should look up to. His life and death served as an eye opener for people to continue what he
