On the second day of Daily 5 the author encourages you to go back with your students and review what happened on the first day. The second day will be closely related to the first. The teacher will continue working on stamina building and refining the skills under each foundation. The foundations may not always be taught in the same order they are listed in the book. According to the author, it is important the teacher look at the students immediate needs and use their judgment to decide what is most beneficial to their students. Up until this time, the teacher has been placing the students in different places around the room to complete their daily independent reading. However, on this day, the students will get the choice to pick …show more content…
The first is how to sit correctly. The author calls it EEKK style, which stands for elbow, elbow, knee, knee. Voice level is then discussed. When sitting the correct way the author explains how quiet the voices can be because the students are right next to each other. Checking for understanding is very important. When beginning this technique the author suggest that after each page or paragraph the students go back and check to see if they understood the specific passage or page. The author then goes on to describe different ways to read and how to choose a good partner. This can be determined based on the choice of good fit book and if the students are on or near the same reading level. Listening to reading should be fun for the students, however, according to the author it is important they are taught how to set up their technology and clean up their technology when the time is up. Each student should listen and follow along to the book and then reflect on what they just listened to in order to check for comprehension. Technology devices are popular in the classrooms, so the author encourages the teacher to teach how to be fair and share the devices in the
Most of the other students in her 2nd grade classroom are able to read classroom text and complete work independently. They also read books for enjoyment on their own. The reading time in her classroom consists of a block during which the teacher works with small groups and the children are expected to work quite independently when they are not working directly with the teacher. The class uses a trade book format and this is utilized across the curriculum. Students are provided with short skills building lessons in large and small groups. Most of the time spent during explicit reading instruction is targeted to helping students develop reading fluency.
After conducting this research, it is proven that these rapid changes in technology are changing the way we teach. Technology can be a distraction and lead us off topic, especially when it doesn’t work. In turn, it also enhances the learning environment throughout the day which is why it is incredibly important for teachers to feel comfortable implementing it. Learning is enhanced through the use of computers, iPads, interactive SmartBoards, and more. When technology is properly utilized in the classroom language barriers are decreased, students feel encouraged to make further investigations, and a variety of learning styles are incorporated on a daily basis. A variety of resources can be utilized. It is simply a matter of the teacher using them in a ways that encourages conversations, enhances the skills students are currently learning, and provides students with additional practice. It is not enough to just use the resources because we have to, teachers must use them effectively.
Technology has always been a human fascination, from the way it promotes rapid communication to the simple fact that it entertains, and connects people worldwide. As more and more technology-based education systems are being set up in classrooms, we have seen an era when smartphones overpower people, interpersonal communicaiton, and even minds. Personally, after reading these articles, I feel more compelled to quit the use of technology, whether it be the smartphone, laptops, or tablets, in a classroom setting. As the West Point Academy study showed, students tended to score better when any use of technological device was strictly banned. Further demonstrating that technology is a burden on effective learning, the Ereader study made me become aware that the mind is stimulated through actions,
The biggest problem with today’s education is how rapid technology is advancing. So rapid, in fact, that schools are attempting to keep up, but are sadly falling short. Teachers are being required to incorporate new technology into their everyday methods of teaching. The use of IPads or laptops in classrooms can be helpful to both teachers and students(edreform online classes)”. If a teacher is not overly familiar with the new devices, then the students will lose what little time they have to learn. As a teacher is attempting to fix technical problems in one class, the class that has a tech savvy teacher will be advancing far ahead. On the other hand, if a classroom is full of students who are very unfamiliar with the technology will have to be taught how to operate it, which wastes valuable time. In today’s society technology usage is so much more widespread than it was just five years ago. The new toys can allow schools to broaden their curriculum. Since most work can be done on a single device, kids can work at their own pace and potentially reach heights they could never reach with book, pen, and paper. The benefits of this new tech greatly outweigh the downsides. The biggest problem with technology in classrooms is their lack of use. So few schools have jumped on board with these programs, and therefore are holding their kids back. These products are readily available, but “the use of new technology
Currently technology occupies an important part of people 's lives. This is reality, no one can deny it at all, and it is the same for modern education. Modern gadgets are no stranger to it. For example the iPad, which is embedded in the educational system in many developed countries is considered a smart technological device that has changed teaching and learning. Its success has been transforming the traditional classroom into a place to work and interact with the real world. Currently, with digital data and online communication, the ipad has become very important. This is because of the guaranteed continuous access to important educational resources such as applications. Another significant reason to use the iPad as an educational tool is that it provides the opportunity to increase learning, as it is not considered a strange tool for learners these days. There are very few students who do not have at least one iPad or other smart device.
The primary instructional goal of this endeavor involves leading students through the process of learning to read and reading to learn. Our goal is to ensure that all students are provided an individualized program of reading instruction using the pedagogical process inherent in the Reader’s Workshop program developed by Teacher’s College. The Reader’s Workshop pedagogical approach focuses on pinpointing
People love the idea of using Kindles and e-readers for secondary classes, but the author of “Teachers’ Thoughts on e-readers in the Elementary School Classroom,” Marcy Zipke, wanted to investigate how elementary teachers feel about using Kindles in their classrooms. Zipke concluded that although Kindles were a useful tool for increasing a student’s literacy, the cost and damages associated with a Kindle left furnishing their classrooms with several only as a dream. To conduct research for her study, Zipke placed Kindles had elementary teachers to play around with the Kindles and keep their students and classwork in mind. The teachers focused greatly on how the built-in dictionary and the text-to-speech function would be helpful for
In today's high tech world, there is a growing group of parents who question why kids should read. They think that the interactive games and stories on smart devices, paired with educational programming on television, offer a richer experience than plain, simple books. While it is important for children to gain modern skills and experiences, there are critical skills and knowledge learned by reading books that are not replicated or replaced by technology.
Although having technology in a classroom is changing how the children learn in the classroom because technology teaches the brain to read in a different way than if a teacher would teach a student how to read a book.
The learning abilities with technology may vary along users and students’ learning. Some students use tablets to take notes; the journal “Kindle in the Writing Classroom” stated Kindle was not often use by students to take notes and many students disagree with the fact the tablet can help change the way he or she to use in the class (Acheson 287). No matter which device people use for read or study today, tablets have advantages and disadvantages. Reading or working on tablets depends on what people prefer. The journal “The High School Book Club--Now With Kindles” by Editor Pam Harland explained the benefit of the tablets and letting anybody share the thoughts about kindle like. Jamie (one of the character in the journal) stated she likes to
This research paper examines the benefit of the incorporation of technology when teaching literacy in the kindergarten classroom. It searches the advantages and disadvantages of the implementation of technology from the use of smartboards, iPads, iPhones, mp3 devices, tablets, computers, and software. The literature review provides an understanding of the different uses of technology and the positive and
Research has shown that close reading activities help students comprehend a complex text. This means that through the close reading instruction, the learner would be able go deeper into the text and understand complex vocabulary exposed in the text. Moreover, this type of instruction benefits English Language learners when reading independently. Through scaffold like shared reading, interactive read aloud and think aloud, Burke (n.d.) states that since not all the learners are ready to read independent complex text, the teacher would need to support the learners and gradually release them. He also mentions that a great way to release the students is by the teacher do models, then both the learners and the teacher work collaboratively and as the instruction continues, the students are release to work independently. In order to achieve successful results, planning a close reading activity needs to work with the specific needs the student have and give the learners several strategies that when release they can have a proficient reading.
[Video clip 1 is from lesson 1. This clip shows the students reading the text using different voices. The students were engaged in the lesson as they were having fun while practicing reading. They were also improving their fluency. Video clip 2 is from lesson 2. This clip shows students working on the rug learning how to read and understand tricky words. The students were taught strategies to be able to complete the assigned tasks.]
The implementation of the latest technology is important for enhancing the amount of information a student can embrace in a class. Currently, high schools have very strict rules against the use of cell phones and other electronic devices that have the ability to enforce key ideas in a curriculum. Education is the first step in the life of kids to becoming an effective member of society and these kids should be able to use every resource available to them in class to get the most out of this crucial step of life. The way a child is taught from kindergarten to twelfth grade can have a major impact on who they are as a person.
During this day, I did a lot of snooping around Mrs. Charipar’s room and desk (with permission I promise). I loved that she had a “Daily Purpose Statement” on the board for all of the students to know what to expect out of the day, and in her planner for herself, these purposes were connected to Core Standards and overarching themes that the students were most likely not aware of. I also was very excited when she told me that at the beginning of each class, although only 47 minutes long, they spend the first ten minutes reading and then briefly journalling over their free reading book. Mrs. Charipar explained that each entry needed to have the title, current page number, and two or more sentences about what was currently going on in the book and the students reaction. This was used to assess not only that the student was actually reading, but that they were able to stick to one book as well. Many students switched books without finishing quite frequently.
