Using my personal knowledge and experience, the following reflection will state why the ten values highlighted above are important in leadership and governance. After each explanation there will be an example to support the reasoning. The reflection will use “the government” as a leader to reflect on leadership and governance. Specifically, the government will refer to any ministry at the provincial level and it is not specific to one leader, to a group of leaders (members of provincial parliament, ministry, public servants etc.) or to a particular organization (ministry, unit, department etc.).
The first two values for good leadership and governance are achievement/success and effectiveness. The government needs to make decisions which effectively reach its goals and visions. If the government is unable to achieve any achievements or success, it suggests that leadership is poor. The ineffective leadership may suggest that current governance practices are inappropriate. For example, in 2006, the Ministry of Education in Ontario stated that their goal was to have 75% of Grade 6 students achieve the provincial standard (70%) in reading, writing and math. According to the results, in 2015-2016, writing was at 80%, reading was at 81%, and math was at 50%. The results suggest that the leadership and governance of the initiative was successful in reading and writing, but the lack of success in math suggests that the approach to addressing the lack of math knowledge

In the article “In Defense of Prejudice" the author Jonathan Rauch argues that it is very difficult to have a world without prejudice. It is a fact that, in general, we see prejudice as an unconstructive word, full of negative meaning. Conversely, the author linked it to a positive statement (“in defense of”) that reflects just the opposite effect of what prejudice is really about in one’s mind. The title brings two ideas simultaneously: comfort for the ones who are racist, or repugnance for those ones who feel indignant with any kind or prejudice, racism, bigotry. The title makes us to think that we will have an article exploring the benefits of prejudice. Contrary, as the reading progresses, we see an author with varied supportive points that explain his position about prejudice and he is not fighting for or against prejudice. In many points, Rauch will explain the reasons he found to be in “defense” of prejudice.
When I began this course I was very nervous because I had no idea of the scope of the course. I was unfamiliar with the Canadian education system and other students. After receiving instructions from my professor, I introduced myself to the person beside me and this process helped to break the ice. I developed a good friendship with the student and this technique used by the professor helped me develop better communication and relationship skills. After few classes, I felt very comfortable and the nervousness and anxiety faded away. I learned about leadership, power relationships in the profession, personal, cultural, professional and organizational, each of which is very important in the nurse’s career. I also gained knowledge regarding client centred care.
There are several different styles of leadership that can be used by a leader, whether if it is within the public services or not. Each style works at different points of a situation; therefore, a leader must be able to change between the required leadership style to ensure that a task is completed to the best of a team’s ability. It is unlikely that only one type of leadership would be required during a task, so if a leader cannot adapt, the task may not be completed.
It was all over the news when the terrorist attacks happened in Paris. It was devastating to the families and people who live them found it difficult to cope. Many families migrated to the US to settle down with their remaining families that survive the tragedy. It was devastating all around the world and issues still remains unresolved till this day. After the tragedy, the US governors in each state were prepared and some were not prepared to accept refugees to reside in the state in which they are governing. A Republican Gov. Mike Pence, who is the governor of Indiana clearly and loudly declared the refusal of the Syrian refugees and suspended the resettlement of the families in Indiana. Gov. Mike

Situational approach is either applying supportive or directive behaviors to specific situations. Every situation is unique which is why different methods should be applied accordingly, depending on the dynamics of the situation. To determine what behaviors are needed, a leader must analyze his or her followers’ commitment and competence.
As described in the NDP, there is unevenness in capacity that leads to uneven performance in the public service. This is caused by a complex set of factors, including tensions in the political-administrative interface, instability of administrative leadership, skills deficits, insufficient attention to the role of the state in reproducing the skills it needs, the erosion of accountability and authority, poor organizational design and low staff morale. There have been challenges in achieving constructive relations between departments and between the spheres of government, and a reluctance to manage the system on a day-to-day basis has created tension and

Management and Leadership are two different skill sets and positions, however, it is believed by some organizations that they go hand in hand. I believe that management is a learned concept that is taught in schools. Universities and colleges offer degrees in Management and/or Leadership. Authentic leadership is not actually taught but can be learned as a practical skill through being coached and mentored by a true effective leader. Leadership skills are gained by completing research, gaining ideas to inspire and help others achieve new skills to move into a better position or advanced career. Achieving new leadership skills is always a work in progress. In my IMG 233 class I learned that Management is the formal influence of the organization. Managers develop strategic goals, establish performance control mechanisms, and communicate instructions and information to ensure probability and production to meet the overall demands. Leaders are the heart of the organization and their role is to informally influence and inspire employees while creating visions and direction and at the same time building strong team relationships. An effective and dynamic leader empowers their team with the knowledge to be innovative and generate new ideas to increase productivity and performance.
I can honestly say that I am fortunate to feel like I have been training my whole life to be an extraordinary leader. Every experience has been a lesson and every lesson has paved the path to where I currently stand. I never really thought of it being something you are born with but something that needs to be nurtured and matured. I am not the same leader I was as a kid fresh out of high school running Little Caesar pizza in Willow Grove on summer breaks and whenever I would come home from Norfolk State. The role of leader has evolved as I am sure I have also. Today’s leader is multidimensional and has an integrative view of leadership that is based on building relationships through shared purposes and aspirations. As I think about the leader
During the past ten weeks, I have strengthened my concept of what constitutes effective leadership. Importantly, it is a leadership style that maximises the contributions of followers to achieve the desired outcomes for the organisation they represent. As Nanjundeswaraswamy & Swamy (2014, p.57) explains, effective leaders need to balance the drive to achieve a task with managing relationships. Therefore, it is essential for good leadership to not only focus on the task but develop, motivate and empower team members to strive for the achievement of task goals.
