Bryce Andersen McCarthy Period 1 5 April 2017 Water Pollution Water pollution has been an issue for decades here on Earth. Wildlife that lives in or near the ocean are being harmed because of all the trash and waste in the water. For Example: 70% of industrial waste are being dumped into water. Because of all this industrial water, 64% of lakes are not clean because of water pollution, 44% of streams are not clean because of pollution, and 30% of bays are not clean because of water pollution. In 1978, the Amoco Cadiz oil platform spilled over 220,000 tons of oil off the coast of France. This resulted in the death of many species of wildlife around the world. When humans make big mistakes causing natural disasters, the wildlife are the ones that usually pay the price. The people of the United States can reduce water pollution by picking up other people’s trash that is left on the ground, stopping people from draining oil from their vehicles into sources of water, and getting rid of the use of pesticides and other fertilizers. People knowing more about the …show more content…
If we can all work together to do this, Earth’s oceans would be a better place for everyone including marine life. If everyone would just care about our oceans, then this would motivate them to pick up after themselves. Oceans cover approximately 97% of the Earth, so if the oceans are clean, then almost all of our planet will be clean. No one expects the oceans to become spotless overnight. People think that this process will take many years of hard work to get through. But the people of Earth have accomplished things harder than this before. This problem is going to go away by ignoring it, so we need to do something about
People are polluting the oceans which not only affects us but also affects the beautiful underwater habitats and interesting sea creatures. Two billion people within 30 miles of the coast create 100 metric tons of coastal plastic waste (Doc.1). This plastic waste can get caught around sea animals, injuring them or even killing them (OI). Oils spills can really hurt marine life (Doc.2). Some creatures could eat it or get covered in it. If the fish eats the oil and then someone or something eats the fish they could get extremely ill. When there are excess nutrients in the water algal blooms occur, which is when algae has too many nutrients and reproduces in large numbers, this can also hurt people (OI). For these reasons and many more we should
More often than not, the society worries and frets over the impending doom posed by pollution on our own species, but the millions of other organisms feel the impact almost more than the creators of the issues themselves. In the Gulf Oil Spill of 2010, 3.19 million barrels were released into the ocean after a break in an Exxon oil pipe, and is rightfully called the worst oil spill in history. Cleaning up spilled oil is difficult in itself, but when thousands of metric tons of it spreads across the Gulf of Mexico, the job is much more substantial. Methods to remove and avoid spread as much as possible exist, but are never completely effective, especially when chemical dispersants are nearly impossible to contain. The death rate of dolphins in the area tripled, large coral reefs showed sign of immediate tissue damage, and aquatic birds became slick and unable to fly, causing many to starve. The oil spill covered in total nearly 1000 miles of ocean, and this is only example of the many that have occurred in the past twenty years (Frost, Emily). Air pollution is now the most common type of pollution, as our constant use of automobiles seems never ending. A deluge of acid rain has decimated entire forest ecosystems, and in cities such as Beijing and Singapore, the smog is so thick, many must wear masks to breathe comfortably. Countless examples of our wrong-doings on the
In 2010, an oil spill, now called the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill occurred at the Gulf of Mexico. An estimated 4.9 million barrels of oil was dumped into the ocean. The oil exposed to the marine life’s environment caused many of the marine life to become sick. Many of the birds would ingest oil while they tried to clean the oil off of their feathers and would cause them to have lung disorders. According to scientist, up to 800,000 thousand birds and 300,000 turtles died as a result. I am here to today to raise awareness on this issue and inspire others to help protect our oceans. I hope that one day, we can restore our oceans to the clean and pure ocean it once was.
Water is a human right can be interpreted in many ways, but the most common interpretation is that people should have access to clean water. Despite that access to clean water may sound logical and ideally, it is still an issue. Because access to clean water is problematic, activist groups such as the US Human Rights Network (USHRN), “a national coalition, comprised of over 160 groups and individuals working on the human rights to water and sanitation throughout the United States,” exist to establish clean and accessible water in the world (USHRN: #WaterIsAHumanRight). The US Human Rights Network works on a local and national level that represents “urban, rural, and indigenous communities” throughout the states (USHRN: #WaterIsAHumanRight).
River pollution is a major problem and it has serious consequences, for example, because of pollution there are now 34 species of fish that live in the Missouri river that are rare or endangered. Also pollution is contaminating fish that come from the river, fish have been found with potentially deadly chemicals in them. This can be extremely dangerous, “According to a study by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, just a small drop of mercury is enough to contaminate a 20-acre lake, making fish unsafe to eat.” (Community Members Say Missouri River At Risk From Coal’s Mercury Pollution, 1). And 3 Million habitats have been changed because of pollution and this has affected the health of the wildlife and the ecology of the
Ocean pollution is a problem that can not be solved unless everyone is focused on doing so, our world will suffer drastically in the long run if we do not fix the increasing pollution, and its not just effecting the air we breath but also the food we eat because of water contamination. "The single biggest problem in reaching international agreement on a topic lies in convincing sovereign nations with different goals, opposing political systems, and fluctuating positions in day-to-day politic that their interests all lie in the same direction" (1, 106). Pollution gets into the sea from many sources but has the same effect, consequently swimming in our seas can make you ill. It costs big time to help decrease pollution and to study it. Poor or struggling nations will have a hard time affording it, which does not help because it has to be a world effort. Researchers calculated that $44 million a year is spent just protecting aquatic species from nutrient pollution, still there is so much pollution.
There are people that want to change what is happening, that volunteer to make a difference. Volunteers are helping watch over our ocean life and keep them safe. People volunteer to watch over coral reefs, fish, and sharks. In 2016, national marine sanctuary volunteers contributed over 137,000 hours across the system. People are researching about ocean life and habitats and how to protect them from destruction. People are also raising awareness and telling everyone about the cause. The more people that know there are more people that care. When people see what is going on they start to care about what is happening. Although, some people don't care and just go past it and don't care or don't realize. If people realize what is happening, there will be a big change for the
The United States has had a problem with controlling how trash gets dealt with. The landfills have been full of trash and the input of trash is continuously coming in. Many times, the ocean is seen as a simple solution to get rid of mass amounts of garbage. This has made all of the oceans but more specifically, the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, a home for many soda cans and plastic bags rather than Marlins and Great Whites. As humans, we rely on oceans for a main source of food. We have polluted our most influential life system that humans need to survive. As one of the most powerful and economically influential countries, the U.S government should be able to push a movement in the United Nations to get an Ocean cleanup program started nationally. This isn’t a problem that can be just left alone. Boris Worm, a marine ecologist with a PH- D in marine ecology said, by the year 2048, the ocean will be empty of fish, which could in return end life here on earth”. Boris is right, if we can not fix our oceans in the next forty years, it could be fatal to human kind. As stated before the ocean plays a huge role in a food source as well as weather conditions. For instance say that there was huge wind gusts blowing in from the ocean in Boston. Those winds are carrying deadly diseases from all the rotting waste that just sits in the ocean. Those diseases could be fatal for human kind, all because of where we put our trash.
Currently, water pollution is a major issue in the US. There is pollution in our oceans, and our rivers due to coal-fired power plants. This pollution is getting into the US drinking water, which makes it unsafe to use. Some of the major public health issues currently are alcohol-related harms, food safety, healthcare-associated infections, heart disease and stroke, HIV, Motor vehicle injury, nutrition, physical activity and obesity, and prescription drug overdose.
any countries in the world are short of precious water. Given that water is so essential to everyday activities, such as cooking, washing, and growing crops, without the quality of water can affect our nation, even causing economic or social instability. The cdc estimates 780 million people around the world, more than 1 in 10, do not have access to an improved water source one that is protected from outside contaminants.
Here in the United States, most of us will go home and have clean drinking water. In countries such as Africa and parts of Europe, they don't have clean drinking water. Some of them will go home tonight and won't know when they will get their next drink of water. Some of them will have to walks many many miles just to go find water. An environmental issue facing our country and the world today is there is not clean water in some counties, some people have to travel far distances for water, and some people don't get water everyday.
The water you drink each day in your home is probably one of the most important things you consider. Your body needs lots of clean, healthy water to stay at its optimal health. Our water in the United States is among the cleanest in the world, but still can contain bacteria and viruses and other contaminants. For this reason, you may consider checking into water purification Fremont, NE to help you have pure and clean water for you and your family to drink. This can have an effect on your overall health and well-being.
Right now, the oceans are facing destruction. Each day new pollutants find their way into the ocean's waters. The pollutants that contaminate the ocean take many forms. Each year millions of gallons of oil are put into the ocean. Toxic materials are dumped into the oceans and add up to deadly proportions. Tons of trash such as plastics and paper are pulled out of the ocean each day. This trash contaminates the water and causes many deaths of marine animals. Everyone on the planet has polluted the oceans one way or another. Factories that are in various industries make an enormous contribution to ocean pollution. These factories use unbelievable amounts of water to make their products. The Natural Resource Defense Council says, "More than four out of every ten gallons of water used in the US are used for industrial purposes." A large amount of this water is dumped back into the oceans. This water is usually not clean, and may contain thousands of different chemicals. When this happens it can kill marine life, contaminate food supplies, and endanger people who use waters for fishing, swimming, or drinking. Water is also dumped back into the oceans by power plants who use it to cool reactors. This water is placed back into the oceans at high temperatures. Dumping water at these high temperatures causes a disruption in the marine environment. According to the book by Peter Weber, "The water from power
Has anyone noticed that the gas prices have become affordable for everyone, the gas prices across the United States have decreased because of the growth of exploration to locate oil in states across America. Our nation has become one of the world’s largest oil producers. Our country does not export crude oil and import much less annually (Black). Although we are enjoy lower oil prices, the ramifications to our environment are taking a toll by increasing the number of oil spills. Thousands of gallons of oil are spilled each year from offshore facilities. The government can’t regulate storms and hurricanes that cause hundreds of oil spills. Oil is toxic for most fish and other marine species and cleanup methods can only remove a small fraction of oil spilled in marine waters (Black). Although gas prices have diminished, the healthy life of our oceans are coming to an end because of the marine pollution caused from the big drilling companies. The threat of oil spills increase with the higher number of offshore drilling areas up and down the United States coasts (Black). With offshore drilling the pollution is increasing which is altering the patterns of the fish and marine mammals around the world. Our water sources are the leading food sources in the world and many countries rely on them to feed the population. These water sources provide many job opportunities allow0ing people all over the world financially steady lives. Although
Oil is considered to be a vital resource in the world today. Such material is used for a variety of reasons, ranging from the gas used in automobiles to the generation of electricity in one’s household. According to Congressional Digest, forty percent of the Nation’s energy comes from oil (Effects of Oil Spills on Wildlife 168). One problem that arises with the world being so dependent on this substance is oil moving through pipelines from one country to another. This problem has made the spilling of oil rather unavoidable. These spills are dangerous, for they jeopardize the well-being of innocent wildlife, our
