Words are often deemed derogatory by the way they are said. A perfectly harmless word repeatedly said in a hurtful manner will eventually become derogatory. This was the case with the term "Redskin". Although the word is often used in a well meaning way, there are still those who use it to try to bring down those of that race. In California, the word has been banned, but that doesn’t mean the derogatory words to those of Native American decent are going to go away. Basically any word used to describe Native Americans can be taken in a harmful manner if said a certain way.

Watching football is awesome. You get to hang out with friends and family, eating chips and drinking sodas. It was Columbas weekend and the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins were playing. During the game, native americans were angry and wanted to stop the game, but it didn’t. Native americans, later, were protesting to change the name because it is offensive to them. Some say that the team should change the name, while others say that they shouldn’t. The team's own says no, some of the fans says no, Dan Snyder says no, and Jason Begay says no. If people looked at this not as something atrocious, but as something positive, there wouldn’t be a problem.

As a native american myself, I can relate to why people have become upset over the name. People feel that this term is not a true representation of who they are or where they come from. In an article written by the huffington post, Travis Waldron writes that, “In 2014, a judge ruled that the team cannot legally register trademarks for its Redskin name” (Waldron 2015). This ruling became a huge victory for the native american community. Many members have tried to fight the trademark name as early as 1992. In fact, an attorney associated with the native american group said, “a victory for human dignity and for my courageous clients who have waited so long for this ruling” (Jesse Witten 2015). Some Native Americans have often considered the name a racial slur and think that the league should get rid of the name as it doesn’t represent Native Americans in the best way possible.
