Wolves are some of the most widely known animals in the world. “Wolves are legendary for their spine-tingling howl.” (National Geographic) Wolves live all over the world. They are more common on the southern continents. (Antarctica, Australia, South America, and southern Africa.) Gray wolves were once common in the northern hemisphere, but now they are almost extinct. Wolves howl to attract the attention of the rest of it’s pack, or to warn predators. Like dogs, if one wolf starts to bark or howl, the others will start too. “Though they almost never attack humans, wolves are considered one of the animal world's most fearsome natural villains.” (National Geographic)
Wolves eat only meat. They always hunt in packs.“These social animals cooperate on their preferred prey—large animals such as deer, elk, and moose.” (national Geographic) One wolf can consume more than 20 pounds of meat at one meal. This is because they roam …show more content…

The gray wolf and the red wolf. There are two other kinds of wolves branching off from those two. Wolves are in the dog family and closer related to dogs than any other animal. They are also related to jackals, dingos, and coyotes. They are even closer to domestic dogs. “The canid family consists of thirty-five living species. Eight of these species inhabit North America. These North American species include gray wolves, red wolves, coyotes, red foxes, gray foxes, kit foxes, swift foxes and arctic foxes. The eight species may be organized in three general categories: wolves, coyotes and foxes. Wolves are the largest members of the canid family. This is the species from which our pet dogs were domesticated.” (Wolf biology and behavior) Red wolves are closer related to foxes than gray wolves, while gray wolves are closer to coyotes.
