The Cultural Revolution had a great impact on the author of the Red Scarf Girl memoir narrative, Ji-li Jiang. At the beginning of the story, Ji-li once believed her life was near ‘perfect’ because of how unique her family was and how she was always ‘loved and respected” (Ji-li Jiang, PG 42). Now, in the end, Ji-Li acknowledged her struggles and had to come up with humiliation because of her family ties to being a ‘black family’. along with affecting her life tremendously. In this essay, I will be talking about how Ji-Li changes throughout the story with the difficulty of choosing her family, or the Cultural Revolution and Chairman Mao, including how it would impact her mindset and life. He was a LANDLORD!’. The ‘Landlord!’, the whole class erupted. ‘What’s more, her father is the RIGHTEST’. ‘Rightest!’ The class was in pandemonium.” (Ji-li Jiang PG68). After the narrator claims she couldn't believe her family members were one of the “reactionary intellectuals” and couldn't believe what she heard, she says, “Through my tears, I could see everyone staring at me.” (Ji-li Jiang PG68). This shows me that Ji-li felt a wave of upset with everyone staring at her as if they were judging Ji-li because of her class status. Furthermore, Ji-li also proclaims, “Now, I was no longer sure that it was still true.” Because of the dreams she once had. This tells me that Ji-li felt like her dreams, hopes, and beliefs were crushed because of her family “true” facade. Although the Cultural Revolution affected many people in China, they were exposed to “old ideas, old culture, old customs, and old habits”. Ji-li Jiang, PG52, a.k.a. Jiang Jiang. It greatly affected Ji-li's life in the story. For example, there was a male target who wore “four old” clothes, narrow pants less than 9 inches. The narrative also mentions how an officer suggested, “Making a clean break with your ‘black family’, that's good. We absolutely support you.” and “Chairman Mao says you can’t choose your family status, but you can choose your future.” (Ji-li Jiang PG121). But after Ji-li reconsidered the idea, she did not know changing her last name meant breaking ties with her family. As she stated in the memoir of the Red Scarf Girl, “I was totally confused. I had only wanted to break with all the landlords in my family, not Mom and Dad.”. “I thought of Aunt Xi-wen lying in the alleyway, and Shan-shan walking right past her. Ji-li Jiang PG121 -. But, Aunt Xi-wen is Ji-li’s family and Ji-li is Shan-shan. But she couldn't do that, at all. Ji-li struggled between her love and respect for her family and her loyalty towards the party and Chairman Mao. These struggles left Ji-li feeling confused along with being torn apart to pick the right choice. She felt a strong sense of loyalty towards the party and Chairman Mao, but deep down, she also had a strong sense of love as well, respect for her
