“All I felt was empty inside-empty and removed-as though it wasn’t even me who was standing there.” Would you feel this way if your friends committed a crime and you couldn’t say anything? A boy named Brady has to deal with a tragedy that he is going to think about for the rest of his life. A kayak accident happens, which was caused by his friends, and he thinks maybe him too. He doesn’t know if he should tell the truth...or keep a secret. Realistic fiction is a story that can probably happen in the real world. There are five elements of realistic fiction: credible events, authentic characters, real settings, true-to-life themes, and believable dialogue. Red Kayak is an example of realistic fiction because it has real settings, true-to-life themes, and believable dialogue. One way Red Kayak shows it has these elements is because it has the element of real settings. This is realistic because the setting takes place in the fall time in Chesapeake Bay. And the conflict takes place on the Corsica River. In chapter 1 it says, “Fall’s a great time for catching crabs before the females head South and the males burrow into the mud.” Also on page 5 it says, “It’s a pretty river, the Corsica. But it doesn’t have a heart…” This evidence supports the the topic because it shows examples why the setting is realistic. …show more content…
The theme is to always tell the truth. In the book, Brady was struggling with the truth. On page 4 it says, “But this is all so complicated. I can’t go back out on the water. Not yet anyway. I can’t help it. I keep asking myself what if this, what if that? And in my mind I see that red kayak…” My evidence supports the topic because it shows evidence on how Brady was struggling with the truth. Red Kayak shows the element of true-to-life themes because Brady was having difficulties with something that people in the real world would deal with. The
All books are classified by genre. Red Kayak is considered as realistic fiction because it has things like real settings in the story. Considering plot events in Red Kayak there is death, hiding from consequences, and the main character’s friends going to a camp where they just work for nine months. This could happen in real life making it realistic fiction. Other than that there is believable dialogue, true-to-life themes, and again real settings.
Realism can be defined as view in which the author tries to depict life as truthfully and accurately as possible. The use of realistic or lifelike settings described by the author or narrated by a character, add a layer of realism to the story, even if the story itself is fictitious. The characters themselves are often portrayed as believable as possible, to the point that the character being described could actually exist; they are often depicted as very average people, void of extreme wealth, influence, or astounding abilities. The reason characters and settings are often
The book The Color of Water is an example of realistic literature. James McBride presents several characteristics of this genre in his book, such as moral issues, unpleasant aspects of life, and shows us how people handle problems.
The scene I chose for doing my diorama is when Brady finds his dads cordless drill while cleaning out the bathhouse by the dock for Mrs.DiAngelo. This is a very important part of the story because this is where Brady really finds out what happened to the kayak and why Ben died. In this part of the book Brady is working for Mrs.DiAngelo for the summer. She went to Washington to go visit her husband and talk to him about the new baby that is coming. Mrs.DiAngelo asks Brady to clean up the bathhouse by the dock for her since it is a mess. Brady goes down and starts cleaning. He is cleaning and then he finds his dads cordless drill. He is wondering why it’s here, he never brought it over there nor did the DiAngelo’s ever borrow it. Then
None of the boys said they have, but the protagonist thought to himself that their friend was dead and lying in the river. He was terrified of this, and he did not have the courage to tell them about the dead body. Young people do not show fear when they think that they can handle a situation. This can be caused by the fact that when they are together they think that they can do a lot with no harm coming their way. This is made worse when they take alcohol and other substances that distort their thinking and reasoning and increase their confidence. The narrator perceives that they were dangerous characters meaning that they were to be feared and they were not afraid of anything. The thought of him having killed a person and the possibility of facing the law scares him. The little epiphany he has in the story is when he feels something soft and he is not sure what it is. This makes him more scared and his fear is heightened when he realizes that it is another dead body. At that time, he realizes the consequences if his actions. This story shows how a person can grow and become mature overnight after realizing the consequences of his actions. The next morning gives the three young men another chance to
What would you do if you found out that your friends had committed a crime that caused a boy’s death? Would you turn them in even if you were slightly involved in the crime? Well that is the predicament that the main character in Red Kayak faces. The major plot events in Red Kayak go like this: Mrs. DiAngelo and her son Ben were in a kayaking accident, and Ben dies as a result, leaving Brady, the main character, traumatized. Later, Brady finds out that his two friends, J.T. and Digger caused the kayak to sink. Brady also remembers a day when the three of them were swimming and Digger was acting angry at the DiAngelos for buying his grandfather’s farm. Brady had suggested to put holes in the kayak, so now Brady has to decide what to do because the plan to sink the kayak was his idea. Things like this make Red Kayak a good example of realistic fiction. Realistic fiction is a type of story that might really happen. The five elements of realistic fiction are: credible events, authentic characters, real setting, true-to-life themes, and believable dialogue. Credible events are events that could really happen. Authentic characters are characters that develop over time. Real setting shows a setting that could really exist. True-to-life themes are themes that could be applied to one’s own life. And finally, believable dialogue contains realistic conversations. Red Kayak is realistic fiction because of its credible events, authentic characters, and true-to-life themes.
Red Kayak by Priscilla Cummings, is about a thiteen year old boy named Brady. Brady lives near the Chesapeake Bay. One day, he receives a call that a three-year-old and his mother were lost in the river. Brady rescues Ben, the three-year-old. Unfortunately, Ben dies of hypothermia due to the extremely cold water. Brady is devastated from the incident. Time passes and he finds out his friends were involved in the incident. Brady wants to know more about this. The story would have been completely different if this story hadn’t taken place in Maryland.
In the novel The Red Kayak by Priscilla Cummings Brady Parks was involved in an accident that had ended tragically, though he was not involved in the event that had killed 4 year old Ben DiAngelo it was actually his best friends J.T. and Digger, he found a drill used to put holes in a red kayak that Mrs.DiAngelo had used to take out Ben with. When he found it while cleaning for the DiAngelos, he didn't know if he should of told the truth he eventually did. This is because if you don't tell the truth, it will stress you and make the guilt so much more not to than it would to just tell the truth. This is the truth because it is just stressing him out and making him feel extremely guilty.
A theme is the underlying meaning or essence in a work of literature. In the memoir, Rocket Boys, Homer H. Hickam Jr. masterfully places themes throughout the story to arrange the structure and development of the novel. These themes are carried out through the conversations of the main characters: Sonny, Homer Sr., Elsie, Sherman, Jim, Quentin, O’Dell, and Roy Lee. These main characters are profoundly influenced by the themes of the memoir; these themes shape their lives according to how each character uniquely views them. A few dominant themes in Rocket Boys are curiosity, hard work, achieving your dreams, and the conflicts between an
The characters that are involved in the book are Digger, Brady, and J.T, but keep in mind there are of course more characters. For example on pg.106 it states, “Digger was in his front yard and, shooting baskets with his little brother, Hank, when I skidded to a holt on my bike.” This evidence supports the topic because it shows the characters actions in their environment which are most similar to ours. In summary, Red Kayak has elements of realistic fiction including authentic
In literature, there are genres. Two main genres are fiction and nonfiction. Fiction is a work of art that is not real or based on the facts. “‘Fiction’ refers to literature created from the imagination” (“What is the difference…?”). It can explain a story in a different point of view, maybe in a way that is out of the norm. Fiction is basically just nonfiction in an exaggerated way. Though fiction may not be based on the facts, it can still resemblance a sense of real life events. “Fiction may base on stories on actual historical events. Although fictitious characters are presented in a fictitious setting in stories and novels, yet they may have some resemblance with real life events and characters” (“Fiction”). Literature is meant to

Have you ever been faced with a hard decision. Should he turn his friends in or keep it a secret. Realistic Fiction is a book that didn’t really happen but could. The 5 elements of Realistic Fiction are credible events, authentic characters, real settings, true to life themes, and believable dialogue. Red Kayak has all of the main elements of Realistic Fiction.
Are fiction stories always based on imagination? Or does it come from someone’s reality? Have you ever asked yourself why people read fiction stories? Either told through movies or books, fiction stories are ways people find to escape from their reality. However, most of the fiction stories come from people’s life, or are based in a real fact in order to be credible. In some ways, the truth must be distorted to be understandable, because sometimes it can be too complex to be explained. Both Reading Lolita in Tehran, by Azar Nafisi, and How To Tell a True Story, by Tim O’Brien, attempt to discover the truth even if it was exemplified by fiction,
Realism came about in literary works in the 19th century, and portrayed real life unlike the previous Enlightenment and Romanticism movements prior. Writers and people were sick of the neat, happy stories and endings that were written by the two previous movements, and those people wanted something they could relate to. Because of this, Realistic writers wrote about the boring, ordinary lives that regular folks led and did not sugar-coat anything that occurred but was brutally honest. In the words of Randall Craig, “Realistic writers educate readers, not through humiliation, but by familiarizing them with a re-presented world and enabling them to discover the rules by which it works and to apply them both to the fictional and extra-fictional
