“All I felt was empty inside-empty and removed-as though it wasn’t even me who was standing there.” Would you feel this way if your friends committed a crime and you couldn’t say anything? A boy named Brady has to deal with a tragedy that he is going to think about for the rest of his life. A kayak accident happens, which was caused by his friends, and he thinks maybe him too. He doesn’t know if he should tell the truth...or keep a secret. Realistic fiction is a story that can probably happen in the real world. There are five elements of realistic fiction: credible events, authentic characters, real settings, true-to-life themes, and believable dialogue. Red Kayak is an example of realistic fiction because it has real settings, true-to-life themes, and believable dialogue. One way Red Kayak shows it has these elements is because it has the element of real settings. This is realistic because the setting takes place in the fall time in Chesapeake Bay. And the conflict takes place on the Corsica River. In chapter 1 it says, “Fall’s a great time for catching crabs before the females head South and the males burrow into the mud.” Also on page 5 it says, “It’s a pretty river, the Corsica. The theme is to always tell the truth. In the book, Brady was struggling with the truth. On page 4 it says, “But this is all so complicated. I can’t go back out on the water. Not yet anyway. I can’t help it. I keep asking myself what if this, what if that? And in my mind I see that red kayak…” My evidence supports the topic because it shows evidence on how Brady was struggling with the truth.
