America’s possess a rich history but sometimes it’s shadowed by many issues, one of them who has persisted is race. Racial tensions have decreased substantially through the decades. During the peak of racial tensions, the author Tomi Morrison publishes Recitatif a striking short story touching the taboo of “black-white”. Even though recitatif implies a lyrical way the story is written in a narrative way, which it might be misleading at first sight but if you analyze it after reading the story it can be something amazing. Rectiatif tells the story of Twyla and Roberta, two women who became acquaintances and friends. Twyla was black and Roberta was white. The story is told from Twyla’s perspective, which helps the reader to understand her feeling and her points of view. We know from the beginning that there’s a white woman and a black woman, but Morrison never mentions their race, leaving the reader to guess who’s who based on their experiences and lives. Throughout the story we observe how these characters grow and develop, and while they develop we slowly start to realize who’s who. Considering the story is not written in a prosy way it takes the risk of carrying a misconception, but if it’s analyzed in a profound way it makes sense; this of course after reading the story. Since the story contains a narrative and the story is not written in a prosy way the title might not be considered adequate. What makes this title truly beautiful is that its meaning is implicit, it’s not about the writing style or the narrative, it’s about the experiences the story itself evokes in both the characters and the reader. The end-goal of a recitative writing piece is to evoke certain emotions in the reader, which the story can achieve
