At first, reconstruction was a turning point, in which freed slaves could look forward to as free, civilized blacks. Sadly, the North and South couldn’t make ends meet as to reunite the Union. Reconstruction was supposed to be an era of change of good. However, there was also great resistance to change by the South. Which made this a difficult time for blacks around the states. Reconstruction gave blacks equal rights. It also gave access to mixed or segregated schools, and the right to vote. They could be government officials. A Lot of southerners disliked this and did what they could do to prevent it from happening. So, who was the main reason reconstruction was killed? The south was the main reason reconstruction was killed because they did anything to resist it from happening. Although, the North did assist the south in doing so, by often neglect, the South was the main cause. …show more content…
Stephens, state senator from casewell, is dead. He was foully murdered by the ku-klux… He was stabbed five or six times, and then hanged on a hook in the Grand Jury room.” This means the South is willing to violently kill senates to gain their way. They used him to oppose a threat to all others who don't agree with their opinion. Another piece of evidence from document B states, “On the 29th of october 1869,[The Klansmen] broke my door open, took me out of bed, took me to the woods and whipped me three hours or more and left me for dead. They said to me, “Do you think you will ever vote another damned radical ticket?”This shows klansmen would take legislators and whip them to convince them to vote the democratic tickets so they get their way.The South committed outrageous crimes to prevent reconstruction. Sadly, they went through with it and accomplished their main goal of killing
The reconstruction was an era when African Americans tried to fit in and to rebuild the South. The reconstruction started in 1876. Some troops started to leave the South. The KKK was also starting to rebel against the government. The North took their focus of reconstruction and focused on scandals. This essay is trustworthy because I used primary sources. The South was the cause for the end of the reconstruction because the KKK was killing people, KKK was forcing people to vote democratic ticket, and South did nothing about the KKK.
The truth is both sides ruined the chances of reconstruction. They are both at fault. The south and the northerners had an equal part at failing to continue the reconstruction because from the south there was an organization; a cult called the Ku klux Klan. The kkk did not accept african americans. They were so cruel and inhumane to them the kkk would slaughter , manipulate, and even taunt them till the african americans would fear them(Doc A, B)As for the North , there was a lot of corruption due to Former President grant that committed fraud and caused the “ panic of 1873 “ which caused lots of jobs to discontinue and people to worry from it.(doc C)
I think that the North killed Reconstruction. If the north had taken more of a hold on south then the KKK would not have run around killing people. And if the north had been there in the south then the KKK would not have existed either. If the north had kept its focus on the south then it maybe reconstruction would have worked better. The north was more focused on the scandal (doc C) and if they had trusted the freedman more (doc D) then maybe Reconstruction would have been a success.
The Ku Klux Klan flourished in the South at the beginning of the Reconstruction succeeding the Civil War. There remained numerous ex-Confederates that were still strongly opposed to the Reconstruction and sought to preserve white supremacy in the South. Directly after the Civil War the government in the South was weak and vulnerable. The Ku Klux Klan leveraged this and used violence and threats to try to reestablish white supremacy. They were most successful in playing upon fears and superstitions. They not only brought terror to the black communities but they also targeted carpetbaggers and scalawags. They used these threats and fears in effectively keeping the blacks away from the polls so that the ex-Confederates could gain back political control in the
During the Reconstruction Era, Congress passed many laws to provide equal rights to people of color. But at the local level, specifically in the South, many Democrats took the law into their own hands. They supported the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) hoping to restore the pre-Civil War social hierarchy. The texts in Going to the Source illustrate two groups of individuals who opposed the KKK. In testimonies given by white witnesses, Republicans from the North felt the KKK posed a political and social danger in the South, but did not feel intimidated. The testimonies given by black witnesses were people who had experience of the Klan’s violence, and felt their lives were threatened. The Klan’s attacks on whites were more inclined towards social harassment, while their attacks on blacks, which consisted of voting intimidation and night rides, were violent and abusive because the KKK’s main goal was white supremacy.
The most prominent cause of the Civil War regarded the treatment of African Americans. The North fought to end slavery and consider blacks equal to whites and on the contrary, the South fought to continue slavery and keep the traditional practices used considering the treatment of blacks. Finishing victorious, the North tried their best to enforce humane treatment towards African Americans yet the South merely pushed these laws to the side. Consequently, the South came up with their
The South demolished reconstruction by using violent racist groups. Document A supports this idea by giving visuals and quotes from some of the people involved in this torture. " ... was stabbed five or six times, and then hanged on a hook in the Grand Jury room..." In addition, document B also gives vivid images and details on how the South's violent groups played the biggest role in killing reconstruction. "
Forever. 170). The Klan were white southerners who were organized and committed to the breaking down of Reconstruction. By methods of brutality, “the Klan during Reconstruction offers the most extensive example of homegrown terrorism in American history” (Foner. Forever. 171). The Ku Klux Klan as well as other groups killed or tormented black politicians or threatened the blacks who voted in elections. The Klan strongly disagreed with the northern idea that slaves should become part of the government. The Historian Kenneth M. Stampp states, “for their [the North] supreme offense was not corruption but attempting to organize the Negroes for political action” (Stampp. Era. 159). This corresponds with Foner’s idea that the South was not open to the idea of change but more so consumed with the idea of recreating a society similar to one of the past. However, the goal of white power groups was not just politics. The Klan wanted to restore the hierarchy once controlling the South. Foner observes that, “the organization took on the function of the antebellum slave patrols: making sure that blacks did not violate the rules and etiquette of white supremacy” (Foner. Forever. 172). Like the power the southern whites formerly held over the slave population, the Ku Klux Klan wanted to control the African American population still living in the South. They did not want the freedmen to become integrated into their society because they saw them as lesser people. By suppressing and
The causes of America's Civil War (1861-1865) are very simple, slavery and states rights, although the order of the causes are sometimes debated. Union soldiers and leaders did everything in their power to keep the Union intact. In doing so the soldiers pretty much decimated the south, many people lost their property, which, at that time was were a lot of people made their money. Although land was lost and the south had to physically reconstruct after the Civil War, the south also had to reconstruct its society. The south had to somehow integrate the African slaves into its society. The era that followed the Civil War, now referred to as the Reconstruction Era (1865-1877), was not overly successful at revolutionizing the lives of African Americans due to the rise of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), African Americans struggled to gain basic rights, although the right to vote was given to the African Americans during the Reconstruction Era.
During the reconstruction era, the women’s right was shaped. As explained in chapter 6 reconstruction period was a term that was use to describe the history after the civil war. America was in the process of building its nation back up from the war, which included the writing of the amendment, constitution and the rights for African American and women. In addition, the word reconstruction can also covers the period in U.S history, when the U.S economy was completely constituted on industrial capitalism. Even though the slave trade may have ended, there came to be a matter of workers being paid little for their hard labor. Yes, the U.S economy was building but it was not being shared equally. In fact, the gap between the rich and poor was so huge that it created tension between workers and owners. After slavery was eliminated, society could no longer ignore the division in class. It was during this time women started to reconstruct their lives as well. In 1865 up until 1866, women’s right activist called for the suffrage to be joined with African American and women.
The Ku Klux Klan was a group against carpetbaggers, scallywags, and African Americans. North or South: Which side ended reunited the union? The south ended reconstruction by using terrisum and have diffrent governement view. Terrorism was a big reason that the south ended reconstruction."... John W. Stephens, State Senator from Caswell, is dead.
Many questions emerged after the end of the Civil War. The two most common questions were: “How do we put the South back into the Union” and “What do we do with the free slaves?” The Reconstruction Era is known for its two parts. The first would be the Presidential Plan of Reconstruction and the other would be the Congressional Plan of Reconstruction. The Presidential Plan was proposed by Abraham Lincoln but was enacted by President Andrew Johnson. The plan consisted of ways on how to rebuild the South. This plan was also known as the Ten Percent Plan because the Union will take the certain amount of voters in a Confederate state, at least ten percent of voters from the 1860 Election, to come back to the United States. The Presidential Plan came to an end and then came the Congressional Plan of Reconstruction, which was also known as the Fifty Percent Plan, exactly like the Ten Percent Plan. The only difference is that the Fifty Percent Plan was much more strict. Not only did a Confederate state need at least fifty percent of voters from the 1860 Election but they also needed to rewrite state Constitutions that must be
Reconstruction The end of Civil War in 1877 when the last federal troops were pulled out of the South is known as Reconstruction. Although the process could not begin to the end of war, attempts at restoring the war began long before. The Civil War was the most bitter war, it has been called the brother’s war, or the “War of Northern Aggression.” Over 600,000 Americans died during the Civil War and another 400,000 suffered wounds.
Lincoln was the person who came up with the Reconstruction plan. As the leader of this newly reunited nation, Lincoln sought a very specific plan for reconstructing the South and solving all the issues they are facing. Lincoln’s ultimate goals were to reunify the states and ensure equality for all, including freed slaves. After all the rearrangement, all freedmen are allowed to vote, freedmen are now can be educated, and the South is known as a state that holds the most slavery, but now the South has changed into the state filled with impressive varieties. Lincoln was very passion about freed slaves and made every citizens in United State, especially the South has equal treating to everyone including voting.
With the Freedmen, Reconstruction may have helped them gain freedom and protection under the constitution, but these protections were flawed and loopholes were found. To spite the radical republicans, the south created Black Codes that had rules like, “Every Negro is required to be in the regular service of some white person, or former owner, who shall be held responsible for the conduct of said Negro” (Louisiana). These laws were in effect before the 14th amendment came and was in laymen’s terms slavery. Freedmen were known to vote Republican in the south because they gained freedom because of the Republicans. However, the South wanted no one to vote for Republicans because in their eyes it was the Republicans that ruined them. So, to ensure that Freedmen did not vote for Republicans, they invented the KKK. The KKK was a political group that wanted to stop votes for Republicans in the south. By any and all means necessary. One example is Adam Colby, who was a Freedmen and a republican. The KKK tried to bribe him to get him to stop his Radical Republican activities. When Adam didn’t rise to the bribe, they broke into his home on the 29th of October and took him to the woods where they whipped him and left him for dead (“Testimony”). Not only this, but Freedmen had a very hard time finding places to live. Many places had a “whites only” mindset and would not sell to Freedmen. An example of this type of situation is when a young Freedwoman was looking for a home with her husband. An agent told her and her husband he had just the place they were looking for but could not give it to them because “all the white people in the neighbourhood would be down on me” (“The”). Reconstruction brought an even uglier side of the
