Justified Rebellion
Throughout history, many people have had to resist authority to fight for their basic human rights. Resisting against authority for a just reason is known as justified rebellion. Which leads most to wonder, when is rebellion justified? Rebellion is justified if the authority is violating someone’s basic human rights because everyone deserves the basic freedoms and protections regardless of race, religion, etc. In the Reformation of the Catholic church video produced by Khan Academy and in the play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, there are plenty of examples of justified rebellion.

Furthermore, while watching the video, “Introduction to the Protestant Reformation: Martin Luther” it’s clear that there was a lack of equality in the Catholic church between the leaders and the church. Martin Luther was a leader of the Protestant Reformation who believed that followers weren’t receiving equal treatment, so he decided to come up with 95 theses: “Luther was arguing against the sale of indulgences, and that kind of monetary transaction for getting into heaven… there was a perception that the church, at times, was a rather corrupt institution” (Khan academy video). This quote from the video explains that the Catholic church was acting in a corrupt matter and seemed more concerned about political power than the salvation of souls. Indulgences were give and take, a free passage into heaven when once bought. Luther was against these indulgences and came up with 95 theses to help reform the church. By creating these 95 theses Luther was rebelling against the Catholic church. He was just to rebel because the church wasn’t treating the followers equally. Those who were more wealthy had a higher probability of gaining an indulgence so it wasn’t fair to the poor followers of Catholicism. Moreover, Martin Luther was justified to rebel against the church because they were going against the basic human right in which states everyone has a right to
Martin Luther was already questioning his catholic fate and this became worse when the pope allowed John Tetzel to sell indulgences. Luther strongly believed that the Catholic Church was conning the people of Wittenberg into believing they could pay off their sins. Indulgences are a remission of the purgatorial punishment due for sins according to the Roman Church. In acknowledgement to Tetzel’s actions, Luther wrote the “95 Theses”. The 95 Theses was a criticism of indulgences and it had ninety five points attacking the churches practices selling indulgences.
The Ninety-Five Theses were written by Martin Luther in 1517. At the time of writing, Luther had devoted his life to Jesus Christ, and had become a monk. In his Theses, he expressed the idea that someone must be completely willing to commit penance in order for it to be legitimate, and Luther gave several reasons why he was critical of the sale of indulgences. He challenged the authority of the pope and other powerful positions of the church multiple times throughout his writings. Martin Luther’s Ninety-Five Theses writing was very important in igniting the Protestant Reformation.
Rebellion can be necessary if there is a situation going on that contradicts with a person’s opinion. Using rebellion could also apply if a certain rule is making the environment dangerous. It can impact and change a certain area and make it a better place for durability.
Martin Luther argued that indulgences could not allow a Christian to be saved from punishment in his “95 Theses.” An indulgence was a lessening of a soul would have to spend in purgatory. People of the Middle Ages paid for these in order to go to Heaven, and this did not make sense to Martin Luther. He then read and interpreted the Bible and found nothing about paying indulgences. His twenty-first thesis states, “Thus those preachers of indulgences are in error who say that by the indulgences of the Pope a man is freed
People often rebel because they have something they feel is important to say and they want to be sure they are heard. Rebelling against the government is quite common; as people believe, the government is overusing its power or going against the constitution for personal gain. It does not come as a surprise that people rebel against the government and I believe this is “a fit subject for a mad house.” (Washington 2017) Rebellions often lead to people being hurt or killed. I have prevented stopped rebellions and have been through rebellions myself. The Bundy Standoff in Oregon is a rebellion in which a man went against the government with his intentions being to get the people to revolt against the government. People should not have a right
Martin Luther was responsible for the start of the Reformation. He was against many of the Catholic Church’s teachings and beliefs, especially the sale of indulgences. He believed the Roman Catholic Church was corrupt and should be reformed. His beliefs were based on three principles: Sola Fide, Sola scriptura and Sola gratia. He believed that salvation should come from faith rather than from doing good deeds and that religious truth could be obtained by reading the Bible. He believed that humans are able to educate themselves and gain knowledge. At the time, the sale of indulgences was a common practice. On the 31st of October 1517, Martin Luther nailed a document,
Luther strongly disagreed with the selling of indulgences. He challenges the Church with a debate using a document he calls the “95 theses”. The 95 theses was a result of two points: the Bible is the central religious authority and
The thing worse than rebellion is the thing that causes rebellion." Frederick Douglass. This powerful quote by Douglas explains how, in society, there is a reason when people rebel or retaliate. Instead of viewing the person or group as wrong, we need to figure out the cause or motive of the action and potentially fix it. In the United States, there are a few societal expectations, such as attending higher education, respecting authority, embracing diversity and equality, etc.
The sale of indulgences was not saving any souls rather yet it was condemning them. The true way to clear away the sin is to as God for forgiveness and repent of the sin committed. Luther objected to the sale of indulgences for many reason. First of all the Pope does not have the power to relive someone from a sin, only God can. Second paying your way out of guilt does not save you in the eyes of God, true repent does. Third many crimes were being committed nonchalant due to buying indulgence. Lastly, the Pope was the making money out of selling indulgence yet not giving back to its people. Rather they
Through different inspirations, the Protestant Reformation and Age of Enlightenment sought to change the stagnant traditions of European thinking in the 15th and 16th centuries. Began by German priest named Martin Luther in 1517, he was one of the first people to publicly call out the Catholic Church and their bargaining of indulgences by pasting the 95 Theses on the door of the Wittenberg church for everyone to see. The 95 Theses was a short list of the 95 flaws of the Catholic Church revolving around the use of their indulgences. Luther believed that people should not be scammed by the church and pay for fake indulgences for salvation, but rather come to a new understanding of salvation that came through faith alone. The other change of tradition was not getting your source of beliefs from the Catholic Church, but solely the Bible, which was a
This fundamental difference from the Catholic dogma that one could buy salvation to Luther’s new ideas as way to Heaven began to transform many people’s beliefs. Supporters of Luther adopted the concept of faith and knowledge of God as a way to repent their sins, and eventually, it reshaped the Christian culture. As Luther personally struggled to be a “perfect” monk, he discovered that faith in the gospel was the only way to be “made righteous by God”(roper 78). In response to his distress for his laity’s desire to buy indulgences, Luther wrote the “95 Theses on the Power of Indulgences.” He knew he was attacking the pope and the values of the church, but records show that he felt “...not fully in control of his actions, but handed over responsibility to a higher power”(84 roper). Cleary, Luther felt a spiritual connection with God and indulgences were in direct opposition to faith. His revolutionary claims in the “95 Theses on the Power of Indulgences” caused a conflict that would eventually be known as the Protestant Reformation.
Societies were first formed to create unity and order, and while some freedom must be sacrificed in order for society to function, people should not have to give up their basic human rights. There are clear instances in which disobedience has a negative connotation. A child not listening to their parent’s bed time is certainly not classified as a hero like Martin Luther King Jr. Juvenile rebellion is what people typically view as disobedience. Laws function to maintain order in society. Without a set of rules, the world would be chaotic. But it is the citizen's’ job to recognize when a rule is unjust. There is a distinct difference between rebellion and rebellion with a moral cause. For instance, violating traffic laws does nothing to enact social reforms; it is an act of self interest and can result in serious harm. On the other hand, calling into question a serious social issue, like segregation, could bring change to an immoral law. So, while cases of self-serving disobedience are fruitless excuses to violate the law, rebellion can be a crucial tool used to enact social reforms. Although order is necessary for society to function, there are instances when laws are unfair and must be changed for the good of the

In life there are many situations where rebellion is required for change and improvement. Some are simple, like growing up and learning not to do certain things and others are more complex like when a group of people stand up for what they believe, for example, women’s rights and black’s rights. I believe that rebellion is healthy for any growing society. There are many things that we do not agree with, whether it is the law or our parent’s instructions. By rebelling we can change our society and/or ourselves for better.
Another type of rebellion has been rebellions that have challenged religious views. One of the most known movements that is also considered a rebellion, was Jesus’ new interpretation to religion in ancient Roman times. Most of the changes that were brought about had to do with how the citizens viewed their religious text and their roles. In this time only the most qualified of Jewish men were allowed to become religious leaders. Jesus went against that. He taught the people that they didn’t need a high level of education or to be born wealthy in order to do great things. Jesus’ new interpretation of Jewish text, started its own religion called Christianity. Today it is the largest religion in the world. This is important as that means that
